Our mission is to provide year round sports training and Olympic-type competition for citizens with mental retardation in Virginia. Currently, more than 13,000 athletes participate in training and compete in a year-round program of 22 different sports. Athletes in Virginia train and compete in aquatics, track and field, gymnastics, soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, powerlifting, and other sports at the local, regional, state and international levels. Adventure Club East was busy trying to find something fun and crazy to do in the middle of the winter. Coincidentally, Special Olympics Virginia was looking for new fund raising avenues and the two pieces just came together. That first plunge, held at the Clarion hotel, featured all of about 34 plungers and still raised almost $8,000. Since then, Polar Plunge has raised over $100 million dollars for Special Olympics Virginia and over 7,000 chilled souls have taken the plunge. Because of this generous support, Special Olympics Virginia is able to reach out and provide year round training and sports programs for both children and adults with mental retardation throughout the state of Virginia. The new millennium sees the plunge growing bigger than ever with the expansion of the plunge into the Polar Plunge Winter Festival. More groups are already committed to this year's plunge than previous years making this year's event the "in thing" to be doing in February.
