in Viet Nam
The following information about Speech-Language Pathology in Viet Nam was kindly provided by Dr Charlotte Ducote CADucote@aol.com , and while extremely comprehensive it does not cover all aspects speech therapy in Vietnam. Contributions from others are cordially invited. In Vietnam the terms "speech therapy" and "speech therapist" are used in preference to "speech-language pathology".
Dr Charlotte Ducote writes...
There has been great interest in speech therapy in many areas of Vietnam. It is, however, a nascent discipline in that southeast Asian country. Most of the interest seems to have been from rehabilitation specialists (physicians, physical therapists, and nurses in rehabilitation departments), dentists, and ear-nose-throat physicians. There has been attention from others as well, though.

Speech and Language Terms or "Speech Therapy 101" As a rule, most people use the terms Speech and Language interchangeably. In fact, these two areas are very distinct categories, both developmentally and neurologically. "Speech" refers to the mechanics of talking and includes the movement of tongue, lip, cheek, throat, and upper body muscles to produce the sounds needed for talking. "Speech" also includes elements of breath used for talking as well as the mechanics of voice or vocal production. "Language," on the other hand, refers to the higher cortical functions such as the words, the sentence length and construction, and the ideas which are both understood ("receptive language") and expressed ("expressive language"). In more detail, "receptive language" includes the words, directions, sentences, and sequences of ideas which a child is able to understand. "Auditory processing skills" describe the processes used to organize incoming (receptive) verbal or nonverbal auditory information: auditory discrimination between sounds, auditory memory, auditory perception, auditory synthesis, and auditory figure-ground. Difficulty with processing auditory information may be manifested by:

Dr. Fluency Overview

Dr. Fluency Description

What the Experts Say
...
Children's Corner
Stuttering is a communication disorder which affects 50 million people worldwide. It affects four times as many males as females.
According to leading experts, stuttering can be controlled, not cured.
Up until now, speech language pathologists (SLP) have used diverse techniques to achieve speaking fluency. However, one of the greatest hurdles to people who stutter (PWS) is maintaining their fluency after they have undergone therapy.
Studies show that without ongoing treatment people who stutter will regress within four months of achieving fluency. As both speech language pathologists and their clients who stutter know, practicing the necessary vocal and breathing exercises can be tedious. Lack of motivation ensues and the patterns of stuttering return.
STS - Speech Therapy Systems Ltd., whose president stuttered severely from childhood, has developed Dr. Fluency, the only comprehensive software program incorporating all the training material, specialized electronic tools and methodology needed for effective therapy and lifelong fluency maintenance.
The program is available for SLP's and PWS in four languages: English, Hebrew, Swedish and German.

    Q. My first grader brought home a note from school requesting that he participate in the speech therapy program, as he has a slight problem with making L and R sounds. I know he sometimes mispronounces certain words beginning with these sounds, but he can also pronounce many words beginning with these sounds accurately. I thought that with maturity, this would improve. Does this sound like a problem that requires enrollment in a speech therapy program? At what age do children master speech sounds? I should also note that he is the oldest child in our family and he was a late talker. He has been read to consistently since he was three months old. A.
