    Speech-Language Pathologist Question:
My 7-year-old still talks with a slight lisp. Should I consider speech therapy?
    Answer:
If you walk through the hallways of your child's school, you will probably hear dozens of other children who are talking with lisps. A lisp is a disordered production of speech sounds, not a delay. A frontal lisp is when the tongue protrudes through the front teeth when producing the sounds "s" and "z." A lateral lisp is when air escapes laterally between the teeth into the cheeks when producing the sounds "sh," "ch" and/or "j." Usually, these disordered production do not interfere with speech intelligibility or academic performance. Most public schools follow federal guidelines for qualifying children for special education services. Federal guidelines state that in order to qualify for speech therapy (as well as other services), a child must have a disability which impacts academic performance. In most situations, a lisp does not qualify a child for services. As a speech and language pathologist, I feel that a lisp should be treated. It will help your child articulate her thoughts in a mature manner and help reduce any teasing by her peers. Speech therapy can be provided by clinicians outside of the school system. Clinicians also service children in clinics and private practices. Services in these environments are usually provided in a one-to-one situation. Individual treatment may help your child improve her speech quickly.

Speech Pathology was founded by Linda Aldridge Smith in 1979. A native of Western North Carolina, she graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Speech Pathology. She received her Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of South Carolina. After years of experience in clinical settings, she chose to leave her position as Director of Speech and Hearing Services in an acute care hospital to open a private practice. She chose Lumberton for several reasons, including its easy access to and from the North and South Carolina coastal areas, and the need for speech services in the area.
Our clinical staff at Speech Pathology treats patients at Southeastern Regional Medical Center,
Southeastern Lifestyle Center for Fitness and Rehabilitation, Public Schools of Robeson County, preschool programs, home health agencies, and at our outpatient clinic on Oakridge Boulevard. ARANYA’S STORY
    By Kris Copeland
A conference is like a temporary community. People gather from all parts of the country and for a few days at least, they work together, play together and learn from each other. Sometimes certain people and their stories rise up and touch others very deeply. These moments are often unplanned and magical. The word for these sort of ‘happy co-incidences’ is ‘serendipity’. This is what happened when Immersion Learning participants got to meet Aranya Williams and hear some of her stories.
Many people said afterward that hearing and meeting Aranya was the highlight of the conference. For those of you who weren’t there, here is a story that Aranya shared with us all, with the help of her friend Doreen Rosimos. It is about standing up for yourself and a very good example of what self-determination means.
    SPEECH THERAPY
A dozen years ago, when Aranya was around 20 years old, she decided she needed and wanted to have speech therapy. Aranya knew it was very hard for her to speak and that it was very hard for people to understand her. Aranya went through all the proper channels. With the help of her social worker, she wrote a letter to the Medicaid administration asking for them to pay for speech therapy and then she waited for a reply. A letter finally came and it said, No, Aranya could not have speech therapy. So Aranya wrote and mailed a second letter. This also was answered with a letter of denial. Aranya did not give up. She sent a third letter. A third letter of denial was sent to Aranya. She still would not take No for an answer.

In 1972, I began working with my father after he suffered a massive stroke. He was almost totally speechless, diagnosed as an "untreatable" global aphasic. After nine years, Daddy was only able to say 9 words. Developing a new approach and working extensively with him, I discovered ways that he could take charge of his own recovery. I showed him what to do and how he could work on his own. After using my method almost every day for a year and a half Vernon started to talk again! After 2 1/2 years, he could say over 700 words, go shopping on his own, ride the bus alonehe even became an artist and showed his paintings in the capitol building.
