Introduction Basically, writing for public speaking isn't all that different from other types of writing. You want to engage your audience's attention, convey your ideas in a logical manner, and use reliable evidence to support your point. But the conditions for public speaking favor some writing qualities over others. Most crucially, when you write a speech, you need to keep in mind that the people in your audience can't go back and hear that last sentence or paragraph again. Think about how many times you've been reading something for class and thought, "Huh? What does that mean? I'd better read that again-it sounds important." Since your listeners don't have that option, you must be extremely clear in writing your speech, even if that means writing in a less complex or more mechanical manner. For a listening audience, some of the rhetorical flourishes you proudly display in other forms of academic writing (such as complicated sentence structures or fancy vocabulary) will actually present problems, while some aspects of writing you usually try to avoid (such as repetition and the use of second-person "you") can work quite well. Rather than rush ahead to stylistic concerns, though, we'd like to consider the

Curiously, the prospect of writing a speech seems to generate a similar effect on many writers. (Incidentally, after public speaking, death rates second, and jumping out of a plane comes in a close third.) Speech writing may not be the hottest market available to writers (yet), but it's one area that's often overlooked by corporate communicators. If you are responsible for assembling all of the media material for a major announcement, it makes sense that you should be involved with the speeches on the day. Apart from knowledge of the project, you will also bring to the task your professional writing skills as well as a level of objectivity that the presenter may not possess. Like any piece of writing, you need to invest time not only in researching the topic, but also in deciding the best way to present it.

Too many speeches are written for reading and when presented sound stilted and unnatural. To help you get over this problem you should write your speech as you will say it - in other words do not write do not when you will actually say don't. Had I written that last sentence for speaking I'd have written: don't write do not, write don't because that's how you'll say it. This is a very simple technique I've used over the years when writing speeches for Ministers, Ambassadors etc and it works well. Keep your sentences short and uncomplicated. Again, this is a problem when speeches are written for reading not speaking. It's much easier to work out what's meant when you read it and see the punctuation but when it's spoken, it's much more difficult to follow. Make each sentence a new paragraph on the page so it's easier to keep your place, and vary the length of the sentences to avoid a staccato presentation. Before you write your speech set it out in the form of dot points. This will make it easier to keep it in a logical order. It will also help you remember your speech so you don't have to keep referring to your notes.

WRITING SPEECHES THESE TYPES OF SPEECHES ARE USED BY SPD 100 (PUBLIC SPEAKING) STUDENTS AND SPD 110 (INTRODUCTION TO SPEECH COMMUNICATION) STUDENTS. THESE GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN CREATED BY PROFESSOR BRYANT DEMONSTRATION SPEECH : This is an informative speech in which the student is supposed to explain a process. The student is to use visual aids and must actually go through the action of making or doing the activity chosen. There must be a finished product. This is not just a "show & tell" but the process actually has to be done in class. The goal for this speech is for the student to concentrate on "doing" and not their note cards. Quickly the students realize they can speak with confidence about a topic they already know a great deal about. Some research is suggested so specific details can give "depth of knowledge" to the presentation. INFORMATIVE SPEECH : This assignment concentrates more on research. The student may select any topic they wish, but the key is to give "unknown" information to their audience. Therefore, the student must narrow the topic so in 5-7 minutes they can give "depth of knowledge." Visual aids are required. The speaker must be objective in writing the presentation and may not take a pro or con position. PERSUASIVE SPEECH: This assignment requires the student to take a position on a topic and attempt to reinforce our feeling, change our ands, and/or motivate us to action. The student should have done some type of audience analysis to know how the class feels about this topic so the student can better position their arguments. The majority of the class should not be in complete agreement with the student's position on the topic. Frequently, just rewording the specific purpose statement can give the speech a different focus. For example, "I intend to persuade my classmates to insist that their passengers wear seat belts when riding in their car." As opposed to "Wear seat belts" which the audience already does as indicated from their questionnaire. This topic may or may not be controversial. A specific plan or request for the audience is more effective in persuasion rather than a general goal.

Back to Modern History SourceBook Modern History Sourcebook: Queen Elizabeth I of England (b. 1533, r. 1558-1603) Selected Writing and Speeches Behind these texts is the difficulty Elizabeth I had in ensuring stability in the present, and security for the future. The problem for the Tudor Dynasty, which had come to power through Henry VII's 1485 triumph in Wars of the Roses, was in ensuring the succession. The key to peace was to have an undisputed heir. Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII, had had three children survive him. Two, Mary and Elizabeth, were female, and so on his death, Henry VIII was succeeded by his ten-year old son, Edward VI in 1547. Edward died six years later, and even though they were women, England preferred to crown Mary as a legitimate heir rather than to search for a suitable male. Mary, though, not only revealed herself to be a Catholic who persecuted Protestants, but she married Philip II, King of Spain, one of the most aggressive and devout foes of Protestantism. Mary jailed her sister on suspicion of fomenting a revolt. Five years later, Mary died, and so in 1558, twenty-five year old Elizabeth became Queen of England.
