Must have the Code! The phonograms teach the codes of English that enables the students to decode (read) English swiftly. The students can quickly learn these essentials and apply them to any reading context and read literature of their age-interest that educates and develops a love for reading. Reading on the Fast Track Phonics is taught first and fast. In the first 5 weeks the students learn 56 phonograms and the first 150 words of the Extended Ayers Spelling List of 1200+ of the most commonly used words taught in the order of use frequency. In order for beginning students to learn to construct literate English sentences they must learn spelling words taught in the order of use frequency. The students construct sentences using these words from their Spelling Notebooks. Potential reading abilities now include hundreds of words that make up the same spelling patterns There are hundreds of blends: (br=b+r) each letter retains its own sound value. Blending is taught in the spelling and reading lessons.

8:43 AM We use the lessons in the back of the book "Why Johnny Can't Read" for phonics/spelling. They teach the er/ir/ur sounds together. My 7.5yo son can read all the words fine, but gets the spelling mixed up. How DO we know it is "BURN" and not "bern" or "birn", or "GIRL" and not "gerl" or "gurl"? All I know to tell him is that in his reading he will get so used to seeing the correct spelling that it will just "look right." But I wondered if there is some trick I don't know that would help.
Thanks in advance!

How Should Spelling be Taught?
This image shows the How should Spelling be Taught? page as it is in the book. There are numerous approaches to the teaching of spelling and no 'best' way of teaching it. The key seems to be to discover what children need to be able to do in order to become proficient spellers, what knowledge they need and how to teach that knowledge. Despite the considerable amount of research into spelling in recent years, research results do not appear to filter into classrooms. Brann and Hattie (1995) conducted a survey with 110 teachers in Auckland schools and found that,
"Overall, research into spelling production and development is either not reaching most classroom teachers or is not articulated in teacher's views about practice in many class programmes." (p.39). Spelling instruction should provide students with a framework for understanding the rules and conventions that govern written English.

I am a vision teacher. An assistant principal at one of my schools doesn't see the need or understand why, we should teach my blind 4th grader spelling if our goal for him is to be able to read/write Grade 2 Braille. I've given her the obvious reasons but any other words of wisdom would be helpful. There are currently 1 reply. 1. Re:Assistant principal doesn't see the need to teach spelling
Posted by AFBInfo Center on 10/16/2002 Since you've covered all the usual reasons, maybe a practical demonstration would be helpful. Ask her to do an Internet search for information on dinosaurs - spelling it "dinosores" and see what she gets.

What Do I Do with My Spelling Books?
    by
Cheryl M. Sigmon At times on the 4-Blocks mailring here at Teachers.net, members ask questions about subjects they used to teach and how it is that those subjects can be "overlooked" now with the 4-Blocks method of instruction. The subjects mentioned are usually spelling, grammar, and handwriting. Today's column is devoted to one of those changedbut definitely not forgottensubjects, spelling. First, does the 4-Blocks Model include spelling? Yes, it is clearly a part of the model, even though there's no block called spelling . Spelling is integrated in several ways, though perhaps most prominently in the Words Block. Let's look at specific activities throughout the day in the 4-Blocks classroom that provide us the opportunity to teach spelling. Daily the students are spending at least 10 minutes on the Word Wall words which are the high frequency words they use often in their writing and encounter frequently in their reading. They are developing automaticity with these words so that they will not hesitate with decoding these words in their reading or with applying them in their writing. In other words, knowledge of these words helps with their fluency in both of those areas. Additionally, we teach that many of these Word Wall words have spelling/rhyming patterns that will enable the students to spell many other words that rhyme with this wordfor example, if you can spell take , then you can spell make, rake, sake, flake

Tell Congress to Keep Kids Learning Article #24
    Spelling Words: Less is Best!
    by
Cheryl M. Sigmon After finishing a workshop today in Phoenix and reflecting on the most FAQs from that group, I am once again reminded that people have to think long and hard about changing the way they teach and test kids' ability to spell. I always appreciate the questions and even some challenges from teachers about new directions. Sometimes, as a profession, we're far too easily persuaded to "jump on a bandwagon" because some so-called "expert" says it works. The 4-Blocks way of teaching and testing the long-taughtand revered, I might add! subject of spelling is quite different from that of the pastdifferent and similar, that is, at the same time. This week let's rethink why we teach spelling, how we teach spelling, and how we know kids are growing in the direction we want them to grow. Beyond the high frequency words, we want to help kids understand the patterns or word families of certain words that will help them spell many, many more wordsthe transfer that is mentioned so often in 4-Blocks training. Additionally, we want kids to explore the many interesting features and characteristics of wordssome kids may even enjoy the etymology of words. These little units of speech by which most humans communicate are intriguing and ingeniousif, and only if, we present them that way. Having kids memorize boring long lists of words with the "ie" spelling pattern won't provide the motivation for kids to become more inquisitive about their language. They will dread the daily grind; they will memorize the words for Friday's test; but, they will not savor the uniqueness of the "ie" rules, nor will they often apply the rule past Friday's test. We've all experienced that, haven't we?

Strategies teach and use the language of work. Remembering the spelling.Use memory hooks. Look at the word and think of something
    http://www.decs.act.gov.au/publicat/litnumVET/21langua/vet2145.htm
Strategies: Teach and use the language of work
    Remembering the spelling
    Use memory hooks
Look at the word and think of something about it that can jog your memory when you need to spell it. For example:
A student had difficulty remembering the spelling of the beginning of the word beautiful. She worked out the following memory hook: 'AY YOU! BE BEAUTIFUL' AY YOU emphasised the au and BE emphasised the first two letters of beautiful).
Look at the shape of the word
Look at the word and draw an outline around it. This will help you to fix the shape of it into your mind. For example:
Note: This will not help if you write in block letters as all the letters will be the same height.
    Look for words within words
A word will sometimes have a word contained in it that you already know how to spell. For example:
    eat is inside meat
Look at the structure of the word
Many words are made up of a base word with a part added at the front (a prefix) and/or a part added at the back (a suffix).

The Riggs Institute is a self-supporting non-profit literacy agency. We support our iteracy initiatives (curriculum, "awareness of the issues," training and assistance in collaborative efforts across the English speaking world) through the sale of our curriculum materials, training and tutorial services, which are in keeping with our I.R.S. status as a 501 (c) (3) agency. We operate under a 7-member board of directors all of whom are unpaid, voluntary positions. Our method of instruction, , is based on Romalda and Walter Spalding's The Writing Road to Reading (WRTR) , which, in turn, is based on the research of Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a neuropathologist/brain surgeon who researched the functioning of the human brain in learning language (1923 - 1948). His work, with assistance from successful classroom teachers, who still taught the Webster-Oxford collaboration on phonetics and correct spelling with rules of the 1850's, involved reteaching brain-damaged World War I veterans, to speak again, to read, write, spell, read, etc. These teachers, including Romalda Spalding, were trained in English orthography in colleges of education or normal schools prior to the introduction and wide dissemination of the "look-say" (whole-word memorization)
