Treasures from the World's Great Libraries - the curator's tour
The first meeting of the society for 2002 is on 20 February (a week earlier than usual), and will be a curator's tour of the Treasures from the World's Great Libraries exhibition. The exhibition, which includes one of the Dead Sea scrolls, a Gutenberg Bible and other priceless items, is a celebration of the significance of libraries as caretakers of profound knowledge throughout the world. First we meet in the Friends' Lounge of the National Library at 6.00 p.m. as usual, for nibbles, drinks and chat. Then at 6.30 p.m. we will be introduced to Margaret Dent, who will give us an insider's view of the exhibits. As numbers are limited to 50, please book with Ann Parkinson (by fax 6282 1081) or click to email her up to Contents
Committee changes
Following the arrival of unavoidable commitments that were unforeseen at the time of her election, Anne Greiner has, unfortunately, been forced to resign from the treasurer's position, but will stay on as a general committee member. Peter Martensz has agreed to be the new treasurer.

by Christopher Batty zarathustra87@hotmail.com Dostoevsky would have understood Columbine. In 1866, the great Russian novelist wrote Crime and Punishment, the most harrowing and insightful of modern murder stories. Raskolnikov, a sensitive but impoverished student, fantasizes about killing an old woman, the pawnbroker who holds him in her thrall. Alienated from his urban environment, the sweltering heat and crowded mean streets of St. Petersburg, Raskolnikov has nowhere to go but inward, deeper and deeper into his own dark fantasies. It was not that he was so cowardly and downtrodden, even quite the contrary; but for some time he had been in an irritable and tense state, resembling hypochondria. He was so immersed in himself and had isolated himself so much from everyone that he was afraid not only of meeting his landlady but of meeting anyone at all. He was crushed by poverty; but even his strained circumstances had lately ceased to burden him. He had entirely given up attending to his daily affairs and did not want to attend to them. A century and a third later, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris felt burdened by a different but related set of strained circumstances: not Russian poverty but American prosperity; not urban weltschmerz but suburban ennui. The Littleton, Colorado killers suffered inside their gilded cages a severe atrophy of the spirit, a purely emotional, not financial, deprivation. But the prison of grinding poverty and the prison of free-floating privilege are not so far apart; two roads can lead to the same dark place. (Note that the two touchstones of 20th century dystopian fiction, Huxley's

[Updated Oct 2001] *Some professional-quality fiction is starting to show up on the Internet, for example some authors are putting a few published stories on-line, and there are a number of new sites devoted to telling stories via web pages - usually in serial form. The line between Web E-zines and serial fiction has been blurring lately; if a web e-zine is just telling one story in installments, I'll list it under Serial Fiction . Please be aware that half the links on those pages may not work as I haven't updated or checked them in at least two years. New! Graduation photos! Yes, I know it's been two years since I graduated. Hey, at least I got them up. If you are looking for Tiki19's Residence, go here If you are looking for the source of quietude, you're on the right track. If you've come here from Barefoot Rick's page, like about 50% of people do, you might want to look around the library of my residence for some relevant stories. I have a few. If you'd like to know more about me for any reason, go ahead and flick through the links below. Or try Google - the last time I typed my own name into the search box, the first ten or so links that came up were mine. It covered quite a wide range of things that I do or have done, from dancing with spiders to swimming with dragons. If you're looking for non-computer forms of contact details, look in the Australian White Pages - I'm in there under "Tiki Swain". I currently live in Bentley, Western Australia, if that helps.

As far back as the Late Old Kingdom, circa 2575 B.C., the Egyptians were fascinated with scarabs, leaving behind many scarabs made of a variety of beautiful materials including lapis lazuli. Considering that the scarabs personal habits are somewhat unappealing - it spends its days rolling a ball of dung around - it's amusing and amazing that it became such a revered creature. For jewelry lovers, however, the reality of the habits of the insect world bears little relation to their objects of desire. Spiders, a group that includes some of the most deadly of the creepy crawlers, have fascinated jewelers ranging from the ancient Egyptians to Rene Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Marketing on the Internet
The World Wide Web is now an important medium for promoting books and journals, and no publisher can afford to ignore it as a vehicle for publicity and marketing to boost sales. For publishers in the countries of the South it can generate much-needed visibility, which may enable them to reach a far wider international audience than was possible before. However, while the Internet can be a powerful tool to reach a very large audience at relatively modest cost, and it offers access to a vast number of specialized databases, mailing lists, and information resources, there may be several caveats in operating from a developing country, and costs may still be prohibitive. Thus for the time being, electronic marketing can only be a complementary activity: it cannot replace printed mailing-list resources, and it cannot be a substitute for more conventional book marketing and promotion.
