While recent advances in emergency care and rehabilitation allow many SCI patients to survive, methods for reducing the extent of injury and for restoring function are still limited. Immediate treatment for acute SCI includes techniques to relieve cord compression, prompt (within 8 hours of the injury) drug therapy with corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone to minimize cell damage, and stabilization of the vertebrae of the spine to prevent further injury. What is the prognosis?

As the title implies, this site is an overview of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Though it is not only an overview of the medical, rehabilitative, and general approaches to SCI, but this site also contains a look into my life and my feelings concerning my disability. In addition to my opinions and experiences I have written about here, I will add more stories of my opinions and experiences when I can. These writings are based on how I presently view life as a person who has acquired a disability after 18 years of living a relatively "normal" non-disabled life beforehand. Since I created this site and shared with the world my feelings and thoughts and events that led up to where I am now, I've gotten numerous e-mails thanking me for letting people "into" my life, and "into" my mind. I feel that this is the only way to best understand and learn about such a life changing disability as SCI. A text book is good for teaching the basics, the statistics, the things that stay constant from one person to the next. Though talking with someone who has lived the situation provides much more valuable information into the human condition. If you'd like to know about a certain disability, talk to someome who has that disability.

My Account Of Life With A Spinal Cord Injury and Paralysis
On July 16th 1994, my life took a dramatic turn, I had a low speed fall from a mountain bike, which left me with a broken neck at the C2,3 and 4 vertebrae and total body paralysis. I was completely paralysed from the neck down fighting for my life. I was now destined to spend my life as a quadriplegic or tetraplegic, with none of the body and muscle movements I used to take for granted. Spinal cord injury was going to become a central point of my life. Spinal Injuries occur suddenly and in most cases without warning. Each day hundreds of people worldwide and their families and friends are coming to terms with a new spinal injury and paralysis. This website is intended to help other spinally injured persons and people close to them, after their lives are affected by this devastating disability. However, I know now that life doesn't stop after a spinal cord injury and in fact it can go on getting better
The site now contains some nice community message boards and an easy to use chat room
My life has changed beyond comprehension since my spinal cord injury, I honestly believe that I am a better person now because of my experience. If you would like to find out more please come inside

This project is dedicated to the memory of Omari Brookes, who made many important contributions to research at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and asked for nothing in return. As one of the first people interviewed for this website, Omari's ideas helped establish a basis for SCI PILOT. He served for over three years on a volunteer content review team, helping make sure the stories you see here are an accurate reflection of life with a spinal cord injury. His dedication and good-natured enthusiasm for this work will not be forgotten. ENTER Looking for the ONF Survey?

Explore and make things happen. By making things happen you can continue to move forward. If there is only one thing you learn: learn to push yourself. Both physically and mentally. Move out of your comfort zone. Make that call about the job. Explore a new exercise programs. Try that new mobility device. Learn what works for you. If you want something, ask. If you can learn from others mistakes and successes you can save a lot of time. Find a mentor or someone you can discuss ideas with. Do your best to be positive.

About this site Please consider making a donation to help keep this website online New on DVD Spicomder-Man What is Spinal Cord Injury? Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling. Frequent causes of damage are trauma (car accident, gunshot, falls, etc.) or disease (polio, spina bifida, Friedreich's Ataxia, etc.). The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of functioning to occur. In fact, in most people with SCI, the spinal cord is intact, but the damage to it results in loss of functioning. SCI is very different from back injuries such as ruptured disks, spinal stenosis or pinched nerves.
A person can "break their back or neck" yet not sustain a spinal cord injury if only the bones around the spinal cord (the vertebrae) are damaged, but the spinal cord is not affected. In these situations, the individual may not experience paralysis after the bones are stabilized.
What is the spinal cord and the vertebra?
