Mational charity, in Scotland, for those with a spinal cord injury (SCI). We provide support for those with SCI and their families and friends.
http://www.sisonline.org

About Us Spinal Injuries Scotland is the national voluntary organisation concerned with new and long-term spinal cord injured people, their relatives and friends, along with those involved in the management, care and rehabilitation of the injury.
SIS provides immediate support through the office based Information Service and our Area Representative Network who contact all those who request assistance. SIS have a Legal and Welfare Rights Advisory service and also run a self-referral Help Line. Our Representatives, who are able to discuss all aspects of living with a spinal cord injury, undertake monthly visits to those in the National Spinal Unit. We liaise with other similar voluntary and professional organisations so that the problems of spinal cord injury are recognised and understood.
What services can SIS offer? SIS offers a confidential telephone helpline, which is manned by qualified counsellors. We also have Legal and Welfare Advisory Services which deal with more complex issues relating to SCI
E.g. queries with housing and benefits etc.

Inc. is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with twenty-one years of personal experience in the area of spinal cord injury. A message from our founder: "Our goal is to create more public awareness and to raise funds for the spinal cord society. Scientists agree that a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as other nerve related disorders, is well on its way. Continued research through the Reeve-Irvine Research Center and others alike, depend largely on funds. People need to know that these scientists and researchers are this close, but can only go so far without the proper funds. They need to go forth without swaying to and fro staying focused with clarity of mind aiming for their goal. The public does not know just how important nor close they are in changing the future for thousands of Americans." reminder: We are volunteering to visit newly injured spinal cord patients while still in the hospital in the greater Boston area. These volunteers will be available for their families as well.

Methodist Hospital Pediatric and Adolescent Rehabilitation Program We provide a complete array of therapies to rehabilitate children from birth to adolescence. Our goal is to help children return to their lives of regular routine with their families, schools and communities. We provide inpatient, outpatient and day treatment services. About the Program Our rehabilitation program is an integral part of Clarian Health, which brings together the skills and services of Methodist Hospital, IU Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children. Our program unites advanced facilities with an integrated, family-centered approach to rehabilitative care, unmatched in the region. The physicians, therapists, psychologists, social workers, teachers and nurses on our team are committed to achieving the best results for the children and families in their care at affordable costs. We are well aware of the financial, as well as the emotional, burden that such care can place on families. In fact, many of our distinctive specialty therapies, such as music therapy and pet therapy, are provided at no cost. Our focus is on what is right for the young people in our care to help them live the full lives we would wish for our own children. The safety and security of the children in our care is of utmost importance. We realize what a difficult— and sometimes life-altering— time this can be. We use a holistic approach to meet all of their physical, emotional, mental and behavioral needs. Put simply, every child will be treated with respect, dignity and care.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Spinal Cord Injury System (NORSCIS) at MetroHealth Medical Center has been a leader in care for persons with paralysis from spinal cord injury for 30 years. The mission of NORSCIS is to provide comprehensive surgical, rehabilitation and lifetime care to spinal cord injured persons. In September 1995, NORSCIS was awarded a 1.9 million dollar grant from the National Institute for Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) and given the status of "Model System" for spinal cord injury care. There are only 18 medical centers in the United States which have been awarded the "Model System" status by NIDRR.

Sexual Response Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction Treatment of Male Infertility Conclusion Marca L. Sipski, M.D.
Maintaining a healthy sex life after spinal cord injury is an important priority to many people. Fortunately, over the past few years a large amount of research has begun to be performed in this area. Whereas in the past our knowledge about the field of spinal cord injury was exclusively focused on males and erectile function, recent work has begun to illustrate the impact of spinal cord injury on female sexuality. Moreover, recent gains in the study of infertility after spinal cord injury have allowed professionals to approach the care of newly injured patients with optimism for their potential in sexual functioning. In this article, I will provide a basic review of what is known about sexual functioning after spinal cord injury and the impact on patients.
Sexual Response
The effect of spinal cord injury on sexual response is generally discussed based upon the degree of completeness or incompleteness of the patient's injury and whether the neurologic damage affecting the individual's sacral spinal segments is an upper or lower motor neuron injury. Whether a spinal cord injury is considered complete or incomplete is determined by whether they have voluntary rectal contraction and whether they have the ability to perceive sensation around their rectum. As males have external genitalia, questionnaire studies have been utilized to determine the impact on erections and ejaculations, depending on their extent of injury. In males with complete spinal cord injuries and upper motor neuron injuries affecting their sacral segments, there is a loss of psychogenic

Site menu Home Spinal cord 101 Rehabilitation Chat room ... About this site Please consider making a donation to help keep this website online Sign the guestbook View the guestbook New on DVD You've heard this before... You most likely have heard all the reasons to stop smoking lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, shorter life expectancy yet, it's a pleasure, a stress reliever or an old friend you are unwilling to give up following your spinal cord injury. Or, you simply may be willing to take your chances despite all the evidence of how harmful smoking is. Besides, quitting can be pretty difficult. Additionally, smoking further reduces the total lung capacity already decreased by SCI and diminishes the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream used to nourish tissues and power muscles. Finally smoking can further increase an already heightened risk for bladder cancer. When we think of breathing, we usually think about getting air in . Often times with SCI, and especially with SCI and cigarette smoking, getting air out can be even more important. Why? Because a buildup of mucus and various secretions in the lungs can lead to problems. Smoking increases the production of this mucus and contributes to congestion. Normally, this buildup is coughed out. However, the muscles responsible for coughing are affected with cervical injuries, and to a varying degree with thoracic injuries as well. An impaired ability to cough can frequently lead to atelectasis, which is a collapse of the honeycomb-like air sacs that often causes secretions to become trapped in the lungs. The secretions build up and may lead to pneumonia, one of the more common causes of both sickness and death with SCI. Smoking increases the production of this mucus and contributes to congestion.

Christopher Reeve can now breathe easier thanks to electrodes that the University Hospitals of Cleveland implanted in his diaphragm. The Feb. 28 outpatient operation, called diaphragm pacing via laparoscopy, may allow Reeve to be completely weaned off of his respirator some time in the future.
