The Marquette Law Review is published quarterly during the school year, with the editorial staff being chosen from second- and third-year students on the basis of scholarship and writing ability. Each issue of the Marquette Law Review contains articles on legal subjects, commentary on developments in the law, and notes on recent decisions. Except for lead articles, all material in the Law Review is the work-product of student authors. The Marquette Law Review provides special training in legal research and writing, and is considered a valuable part of the Law School's academic program. T he faculty created the Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review (MIPLR) to provide a forum for scholarly discourse on important issues that face American intellectual property law attorneys. MIPLR is published annually and has an editorial staff chosen from the second and third-year students on the basis of scholarship, writing ability, and interest in intellectual property law.

No Big Changes In Women's Sports Law
    WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2003
    (CBS/AP)
"If we had an apple and were hungry and we wanted to be fair, we would split it 50-50."
University of Maryland Athletic Director Debbie Yow
    WHAT IS TITLE IX?
Title IX says, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational programs or activity receiving federal financial assistance."
That covers admissions, recruitment, course offerings, counseling, financial aid, student health and student housing, as well as athletics. Although college sports have received the most of attention, the law also requires equal opportunities for girls in high school athletics. Title IX is credited with creating a boom in women's sports and also increasing the number of women graduating from college, earning graduate degrees, becoming doctors and lawyers and entering other fields traditionally reserved for men. (AP) (CBS) A sharply divided Bush administration advisory commission voted Thursday for only modest changes to a landmark gender-equity law that substantially increased the number of female athletes.

The Education Department has never punished a school for not complying with Title IX.

(AP) (CBS) A Bush administration commission prepared to recommend the most significant changes to Title IX in more than two decades, with several votes Thursday aimed at changing a fundamental plank in the law that has exponentially increased participation in women's sports.

    http://www.paulruschmann.com
Welcome to my corner of the online world! I am a researcher, writer, and editor with more than 25 years' experience. I graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in American Studies, then went to the University of Michigan Law School. I am a member of the Michigan Bar and make my home in the Ann Arbor area. As you might expect, most of my work involves legal issues. My specialty is tracking legislation and preparing 50-state analyses of the law on specific topics. Oftentimes, my audience consists of executives and professionals from fields other than law, so I have to "translate" the language of judges and lawyers into plain, comprehensible English. My research and writing covers a broad range of topics, including deceptive advertising, automobile lemon laws, franchise relations, traffic safety, regulation of professional and amateur sports, and consumer lending practices. As a researcher, legal analyst, and the owner of a consulting business, I have provided services to a variety of organizations: trade associations representing the Big Three automakers and the international auto industry, the University of Michigan, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Trade Commission, the American Bar Association, Michigan's court system, and a publisher specializing in scholastic titles. When I am not busy with projects for clients, I attend cultural and sporting events, read as many books as I can get my hands on, and travel as often as my scheduleand budgetpermit. Two of my favorite pleasures are visiting new places and sampling great beer. In 2001, I launched

    Sports Law
There really is no substantive area of law or study that can be identified as "sports law." As any attorney, team owner, college athletic director, municipal official or professional athlete and they will likely disagree with the previous statement. This is because there is indeed an area of specialty within the law that is frequently labeled as "sports law," but this label is indeed misleading, at least to some extent. Sports law is best defined as an sub-specialty in the legal field that requires those involved in the field to deal with a wide range of legal issues. The common thread that links these wide range of issues together is the sports context or sub-plot that is lurking in the background. Below is information and some links to information on the various issues that collectively encompass sports law. For books on sports law and the sports industry CLICK HERE
