The Dilemma: Which Disciplines? Which Events?
19 Feb 2003 14:29
At the risk of contributing further to make it THE recurring theme of common interest, THE ISSUE, which ultimately stands to affect ONLY ONE of the 30+ sports currently in The World Games, here’s another batch of views on proposed changes to the Olympic Sports Program for Beijing 2008. With discussions and potential decisions on the disciplines and events of the Olympic Program included in the agenda of the upcoming IOC Executive Board meeting (February 20 – 21), sportswriters the world over have a heyday in outlining the dilemma faced by the IOC. BEIJING 2008
At the end of August, word came out that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided that Squash will not be included on the programme of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing 2008. In a letter to WSF President, Susie Simcock, IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge states that the principles of the Olympic Programme indicate that any new sports which are to be considered for inclusion must bring additional value to the Programme. It appears that public and media interest in a sport must be considered as key elements in the analysis of sports for these are fundamental elements in the success of the Games. Statistics reviewed by the IOC on federation affiliation, nations competing in major events and broadcast and press coverage of major events for most of the sports bidding for a place did not indicate a higher level of global participation and interest than sports currently on the Programme and could not be considered to bring additional value. During a forum on the subject in Lausanne, Dr. Rogge stated that the Programme would remain at a maximum of 28 sports and 300 events for the Beijing Games. This means that if any new sports are to be admitted some of the current ones on the programme must be eliminated and this decision will be made by the IOC Session in Mexico in November.

January 25, 2002
WORLD SQUASH NEWS WSF President Welcomes "Best Ever News" From IOC Susie Simcock, President of the World Squash Federation, has praised the "clear vision for the Olympics" demonstrated by Dr Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, and welcomed the "best ever news" from the organisation regarding the potential inclusion of Squash on the Games programme.
Simcock and WSF Chief Executive Ted Wallbutton met with Dr Rogge and IOC Sports Director Gilbert Felli in Lausanne on 22nd January 2002 to discuss the prospects for Squash being admitted to the programme of the Olympic Games in 2008 and to formally present a Bid Book for the sport.
Dr Rogge confirmed that the Olympic Programme is being subjected to a thorough and fast review over the next few months, so that the programme of events in Beijing could be dramatically altered. The current sports and events in the Olympics will be scrutinised to ensure that they still have universal popularity and are perceived as modern and healthy. The level of doping and excessive injury risks will be part of the review process.
It is understood that, once the current core programme of the Games has been evaluated, a further review will take place of new sports, presently not on the programme, to fill any vacancies. These places are expected to come from the list of 23 IOC Recognised sports, of which squash, golf, rugby, karate, water-skiing and roller hockey are the front runners.

Dumb Olympic Sports
Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)

Thursday, 24 August, 2000, 18:13 GMT 19:13 UK Are there too many Olympic Sports?
With triathlon, Tae-Kwon-Do and synchronised diving becoming Olympic sports, has the time come to say enough is enough? Or should we welcome such decisions and say the more the merrier?
Olympic purists are bemoaning the fact that 'spurious' sports are entering the arena. Are pastimes being confused as genuine Olympic Sports? With darts and ballroom dancing being touted as possible Olympic contenders, do you feel the Modern Games will self-destruct? Do you welcome these moves to make the Modern Games more open to 'lesser' sports or do you feel that more sports should not be included? This Sports Talk has now been archived and will not be updated.
It's about time Tae-kwon-Do was in the Olympic line up, it is practised by over 30 million people! Hardly a minor sport!
Carter, UK The Olympics is the finest sporting event in the world. It is so because it gives exposure to the lesser-known events. I believe that it is sports such as shooting and tae kwon do that make it great. It gives exposure to some of the finest athletes in the world, who would otherwise remain anonymous. I say get rid of football, tennis and the other sports for which there are other, larger, prizes. The Olympics should support the lesser known (but not less popular) sports.

Sports THE OLYMPIC GAMES The Olympic Games are one of the most spectacular reminders of the debt we owe to the Greeks. The original Olympic Games were held every four years in honour of Zeus, the supreme god of Greek religion. The first record of the games dates from 776 B.C., but it is certain that they existed prior to that. They were held continuously for over 1.000 years until they were abolished in the reign of King Theodosius about 392 A.D. The Olympic festival was a great unifying bond between the Independent city-states of Greece. The important sports in the original Olympic Games were running, jumping, wrestling, throwing the discus and throwing the javelin. Only men competed and they wore no clothes in order to have greater freedom of movement. Each competitor had to take the Olympic Oath - a promise to behave in a sportsman-like fashion. The modern Olympic era began in 1894 when Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin decided to revive the ancient Greek tradition of celebrating health, youth and peace with a sports festival. Baron de Coubertin created the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the first modem Olympiad took place in Athens in 1896. Since then the Olympic Games have been held every four years with only two exceptions because of the two world wars. Even though the modern Olympic Games embrace the whole world, the connection with Greece is still very strong. A lighted torch is brought all the way from Greece, carried by a relay of runners, in order to light the Olympic Flame which bums all through the Games. As in ancient Greek times, the competitors still take the Olympic Oath. The long-distance race is still called the Marathon. Marathon was a village about 26 miles from Athens. In the year 490 BC the Greeks defeated a powerful Persian army at that spot. After the fierce day's fighting a soldier volunteered to bring news of the victory to the anxious citizens of Athens. He ran all the way and after gasping out the message. "Rejoice, we conquer!" he collapsed and died.

Golf, rugby sevens and wushu - a Chinese martial art - are all being considered for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Should Tiger and Co be given a crack at gold?
This debate is now closed. Triathlon, baseball and softball are believed to be the sports facing the axe if the above are included in China. The decision will be taken at the International Olympic Committee congress in Mexico in November. Triathlon relies on IOC revenue for survival, while the dates normally set aside for the Olympics would clash with the British Open. What do you make of the plans? And what sports would you like to see included or omitted? Having golf included is an absolute joke. There was a time when the Olympics were competed for by athletes who appeared for the love of their events, not the $$$. How can smaller poorer countries compete against highly-paid sportsmen?
Amateur golf is thriving around the world, why not let them take part?

The USOC names National and Developmental Coaches of the Year in 44 Olympic sports. The award honors coaches who work at the grassroots level, developing athletes into America's future Olympic and Pan American hopefuls. Indeed please sign the partition later in this article for squash in the Olympics. I read in the paper last week that our good friend Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch wants to stay in his position as President of the International Olympic Committee through to the next century. I asked myself if this was good for the chances of Squash getting into the Olympics as a demonstration sport in Sydney 2000. Reluctantly I am unable to convince myself that this is the case - Squash does not have the money or resources to shower the Committee members that choose which SPORT makes the grade
or not.

I think the fundamental problem with showing Squash is that it is just But cynicism aside I have actually sat and watched videos of squash matches I know a lot of work has gone into the broadcasting of Squash but it still faces the problem of a sports viewing public who can't be bothered to understand a relatively complex game and it's vagaries, try explaining why a stroke or let was given to a non-player and you'll have some idea of what I mean !!!. I don't see an easy way out of this as any large scale changes to the rules, for TV purposes would alter the game, and probably not for the better. That said until Squash makes itself more open and available, more viewer-friendly it's going to face an uphill struggle to make it as an Olympic Sport !!!!. It seems to me that one of the main areas for 'growing' the game must be in the USA, if the game takes off there then it will grow world-wide, this in

How Squash got into the Asian Games
(With a little help from our friends!) Kabaddi retained for Asian Games
By MORLEY MYERS

kabaddi
was included in the program for the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.
The Bangkok organisers (BAGOC) wanted to introduce squash at the expense of kabaddi in a program of 35 sports, but the general assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia opted to include both raising the number of sports to 36.
Although the final outcome was in line with the recommendations of the OCA's sports committee, it needed two days of maneuvering by the OCA president Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, to change an ``either squash or kabaddi'' scenario into a successful conclusion.
India backed kabaddi, a sport practiced by a handful of countries, while Pakistan and Malaysia, pushed firmly for squash, which they claimed was played in 120 countries.
Nepal suggested both be included, while BAGOC just wanted kabaddi to disappear, leaving 35 sports.
The verbal rallies were fast and furious with kabaddi's backers extolling the virtues of traditional regional sports and proponents of squash pointing out the need to include world-wide sports.
The argument went beyond kabaddi vs squash as delegates discussed the merits of some of the non-Olympic sports which will feature in Bangkok.
