LINKS African geography Relief: Africa is bounded N by the Mediterranean Sea, W by the Atlantic Ocean, and E by the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Its greatest length from N to S is 8,000 km/5,000 mi and its breadth from Cape Verde to Ras Hafun is 7,440 km/4,623 mi. Its area, including Madagascar and the other adjacent islands, is 30,097,000 sq km/11,620,451 sq mi, or three times that of Europe. The coastline is regular, with no deep seas, bays, or river estuaries of any size to afford climatic or commercial advantages; so that in proportion to its size Africa has less coastline than any other continent, its total length being about 25,600 km/15,900 mi. Mountains: The mountains of Africa may be divided into three distinct systems: (1) the Atlas; (2) the west coast; and (3) the east coast. The Atlas Mountains occupy the northern portion between the sea and the Sahara, from Wadi Daa to Cape Bon. The eastern Atlas , 1,830-2,440 m/6,000-8,000 ft high, consist of two parallel ranges enclosing a plateau where salt lakes called chotts are found. The western Atlas , known as the Great Atlas of Morocco, have an average elevation of 3,050 m/10,000 ft, and the highest peaks are over 4,275 m/14,025 ft.

About St Helena THE PEOPLE
The population of St Helena is 5,000, mainly descendants of British settlers and East India Company employees and slaves from the South Asian sub-Continent, the East Indies and Madagascar as well as Chinese indentured labourers. The capital and only town is Jamestown, with a population of about 900. The other main districts of population are Longwood and Half Tree Hollow. THE GEOGRAPHY St Helena is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, 5'43' west and 15'56' south, 1,200 miles (1,950 km) from the south-west coast of Africa and 1,800 miles (2,900 km) from the coast of South America. The nearest land is Ascension Island, which lies 703 miles (1,125 km) to the north-west. The island is 47 square miles (122 square km), ten and a half miles (1 7 km) long and six and a half miles (10 km) wide, consisting of steep, rocky terrain. Rising dramatically from the South Atlantic, the island has sheer barren cliffs intersected with deep valleys (locally known as guts) which slope steeply from the central ridges. There is little flat land and the island has no sandy beaches. The highest point on St Helena is Diana's Peak (2,685ft, 818m.) On the higher central ground bush and semitropical vegetation is abundant. This changes to grassland and pastures before the terrain becomes drier and almost barren below an altitude of 1,60Oft (500m). The only inland waters are small mountain streams, which occasionally dry up in the summer months.

Geography
St Helena is a small and remote Island, which lies in the South Atlantic Ocean at 150 56' south latitude, 50 43' west longitude, the nearest main land being West Africa some 1770 km away. St Helena is irregular in shape with the extreme length of the Island being from East to West measuring 16.5 km and an extreme width from the North to South of 13.3 km. A central ridge runs from the South east of the Island, taking a semicircular course towards the south West, separating the Island in two. Despite the wide range in soil types on St Helena, both horticulture and agriculture are practised Island wide with a fair degree of success. Horticulture
Distribution of Horticulture
Vegetable and fruit production can be found throughout the Island on a wide variety of soil types and structures and climates, farms range from 50 m to 410 m above sea level. Coffee production favours areas towards the South of the Island where the pH ranges from 5 to 8+, although coffee can be grown in the Eastern areas of the Island. The production of endemic trees and scrubs is located at the ANRD Headquarters at Scotland, the majority of endemic species (flora) is located at Diana's Peak, the highest peaks reaching up to 823 m above sea level. Forest areas are scattered around the Island, although the main production of new planting stock is again located at the ANRD Headquarters.

COMMEMORATIVE STAMP ISSUE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF ST HELENA Series 1 - 16th Century 21st May 2002 will mark the quincentenary of the Discovery of St Helena. In the buildup to this special occasion it is planned to release a series of stamps each year depicting the history of the island through the centuries. Series I was released on Thursday, 29 May 1997. The set comprises four stamps, each vividly depicting the history of the island. Stamp one shows the first sighting of the island by a Portuguese sailor from the masthead of his ship under the command of Joao da Nova . The second stamp depicts the first inhabitant Don Fernando Lopez . Lopez was a Portuguese officer who had deserted to the enemy during the fighting between Portugal and India at Goa in 1512. He was badly mutilated as punishment for treason and in 1515 stowed away on a ship bound for Portugal. However, as the ship lumbered up the coast of Africa Lopez began to have doubts about the reception he might receive on arriving home, and when the ship put in to St Helena he hid himself on the island. What was a close secret of the Portuguese for eight-six years was to be revealed to the world when on 9 June 1588, as the third stamp depicts, the Englishman, Captain Thomas Cavendish landed on St Helena. Cavendish sighted the island on the homeward leg of his famous voyage around the world. Stamp four depicts the magnificent `

The Nile originates from two large lakes south of the Equator. Title cartouche includes a strange looking lion. Attractive later color. (A+) 297. Africa A New Sett of Maps London, [1701]. 20 x 14.5". (OC) Superb impression of this lovely map of the continent. Wells, a professor of geography at Oxford, dedicated his atlas to his student, William Duke of Gloucester. This map shows the continent with two sources of the Nile. It shows the classic source in the twin lakes of Zaire and Zaflan, and also a northern source with the notation "Niles head according to Ludolfus". Monomotapa’s Kingdom is in central South Africa. Large, uncolored, heraldic cartouche. Bottom fold split into border, else very fine. (A) 298. Africa
