Standardized Testing ACT and SAT information and test registration booklets are available in the Guidance Office. Students are responsible to register for their test - the school does not schedule students to take the test. Sophomore students are encouraged to sign up for the pre-ACT or PLAN test, which has a career interest section. The test is adminstered at Avon High School during the school day. 10th graders also have the option of taking the PSAT . This is excellent practice for college admission tests and helps students to begin to compete against college bound students nationally. Counselors will meet with all students to explain scores. Juniors should take the PSAT in the fall. This is the only opportunity to compete for the National Merit Scholars. Students are recommended to take the SAT and ACT twice during the year. Your scores will be postively influenced by taking a challenging course load. Standardized Testing Links Standardized Tests ACT PSAT /SAT

What is the PLAN?
What is the SAT I?
What is the ACT?
The American College Testing Program (ACT) is a comprehensive, guidance-oriented service that helps colleges, high schools, and students in transition from high school to college. Students participate in the program by completing an educational/biographical questionnaire, an interest inventory, and four tests of educational development in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Natural Sciences. After analyzing the information obtained, ACT prepares reports for use by students, high schools, and colleges in career and college planning, admissions, and placement, and academic advising. More than 2700 colleges and universities and other agencies accept ACT scores in lieu of SAT 1 Scores. The ACT is an achievement test. Achievement tests often reward the student who works hard more than an aptitude test like the SAT 1. Juniors achieving less than satisfactory results on a SAT I taken in the Spring may wish to consider taking the ACT during the Fall of the Senior year. The ACT is offered several times during the year at locations throughout the Columbia area to include Spring Valley High School.

Standardized Testing Requirements
The University of Richmond's standardized test requirement may be met in either of the following ways: The SAT-I and two SAT-II Subject Tests in Writing and Math (level IC or IIC)
or
The ACT (American College Test).
  • Applicants are encouraged to take a third SAT-II subject test in a foreign language because it aids the language departments in determining placement. These tests must be taken by January (SAT-I and SAT-II) or February (ACT) of the senior year at the latest. Please consult with your high school guidance office or the College Board and ACT calendars to insure these tests are completed in a timely fashion. We strongly recommend that students DO NOT "hold" their SAT-II subject test scores under the Score Choice option as this delays the processing of their application. Students who apply for merit scholarships at Richmond should complete all standardized testing by the end of December of their senior year in high school. It is your responsibility to have official score reports sent to the University of Richmond.

The Guidance Department:
Important Dates for the the Year 2000 The Guidance Department is available to the students and parents to aid in educational, emotional, social and vocational growth and development. Each student has a counselor, and the student is encouraged to keep in close contact; appointments are not usually necessary. Parents are encouraged to call or meet with the counselor about any difficulty or concern dealing with the student or family. Freshman are seen in small groups each week of the Fall Semester by their counselor. This counselor will work with those students for their entire education at St. Anthony’s. During the remaining three years, the Department continues meeting with Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. College Nights, Parent’s Nights and Visiting college representatives are additional services provided by the Guidance Department. The Guidance Department also maintains the special services of a school psychologist. A college counselor is available to all students. In the Fall Semester, Sophomores take the PLAN test (which is in reality the Preliminary American College Test; Juniors take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test); there is an additional charge for these tests. In the Spring Semester all Juniors take a career interest inventory (SDS) and are encouraged to take the Sat I and the ACT. Some Juniors and Underclassmen also take the Subject Achievement Tests (SAT II). Seniors may take the SAT I and ACT for the second time, if repeating seems necessary.

These are; the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) the Scholastic Assessment Test I (Reasoning Tests and the Scholastic Assessment Tests II (Subject Tests) Additionally, students who are enrolled in one or more Advanced Placement Courses may elect to take one or more of the Advanced Placement Tests (AP) Each of these tests are described in some detail below. The ACT and TOEFL are both listed below. Back to the Guidance Homepage The Comprehensive Testing Program III, commonly known in this district as the ERB after its New York publisher, Educational Records Bureau, is administered to all Freshmen during the early Fall. College Guidance
We believe informed students have the greatest opportunities to target the right choices in higher education for their talents, skills, and interests. The Guidance Office offers extensive counseling regarding the college preparation/search/application process for both underclassmen and upperclassmen. All students have access to college counseling and the most current information about the following:
  • On-site college visits and fairs
  • Critical steps in the college application process
(See Guidelines for year-by-year college preparation below)
  • The availability of scholarships/financial aid
  • Helpful college-bound resources

Summer Program Information Many college campuses offer experiential or academic courses in the summertime for high school students. Programs vary as to cost (free, pay, or stipend-based) and credit availability (no credit, high school credit, or college credit). This is a great way for students to learn more about themselves and their interests and to visit college campuses.

Chap 15: Preparing for Commencement Providing a diploma
What is a diploma anyway? Here is a dictionary definition: diploma: a document certifying the successful completion of a course of study. (Source: Word Net 1997 Princeton University) A diploma is a piece of paper (unless you use real sheepskin) that designates or confers the completion of some line of study. We find it interesting that parents who confidently homeschool turn to jelly when it is time to award the diploma. If you have homeschooled your child and he has completed your designated course of study for high school, you may and should award a diploma.
