African Storytelling: Oral Traditions "…it is only the story that can continue beyond the war and the warrior.
It is the story that outlives the sound of war-drums and the exploits of brave fighters.
It is the story...that saves our progeny from blundering like blind beggars
into the spikes of the cactus fence.
The story is our escort; without it, we are blind.
Does the blind man own his escort? No, neither do we the story;
rather it is the story that owns us and directs us."
Chinua Achebe, Anthills of the Savannah "I will tell you something about stories....They aren't just entertainment...
They are all we have...to fight off illness and death. You don't have anything if you don't have the stories." Leslie Marmon Silko, epigraph to Ceremony Africans revere good stories and storytellers, as do most peoples around the world who are rooted in oral cultures and traditions. Ancient writing traditions do exist on the African continent, but most Africans today, as in the past, are primarily oral peoples, and their art forms are oral rather than literary. In contrast to written "literature," African "orature" (to use Kenyan novelist and critic Ngugi wa Thiong’o's phrase) is orally composed and transmitted, and often created to be verbally and communally performed as an integral part of dance and music. The Oral Arts of Africa are rich and varied, developing with the beginnings of African cultures, and they remain living traditions that continue to evolve and flourish today.

we ask, "Are they necessary?" At the last gate, we ask, "Are they kind?"

Welcome to the Vancouver Society of Storytelling Web-Site! From time beyond memory people have gathered for the pleasure, learning, and spiritual growth that come from recounting and hearing tales about magic, history, and everyday life. Storytelling may well be humanity's oldest art form. Stories strengthen imagination, solve problems, build community. Most of all, they are FUN, for adults as well as children! Sometimes you close your eyes and imagine, other times you find yourself launched forward, eyes wide, riveted to the tale, hanging on every single word. The Vancouver Society of Storytelling was formed in 1991 by storytellers and story-lovers to develop and encourage this ancient art form in our daily lives, and to increase the public's appreciation of storytelling and oral traditions. Vancouver's storytellers perform in schools, homes, hospitals, in concert, at festivals, as part of therapeutic and educational work, and more. They study oral traditions, recording and reading tales of peoples the world over, encouraging connections throughout our multicultural city. They write both fiction and nonfiction. Vancouver storytellers meet on a monthly basis for Cric Crac, an informal story-sharing, and organize many events throughout the year, including our annual FESTIVAL in November.. We publish a newsletter chock-full of information and thought-provoking articles on many aspects of storytelling.

Movie review and pictures.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/storytelling.html
Storytelling Storytelling is the third film by written and directed by Todd Solondz, and continues in his tradition of wickedly funny, almost to the point of morbid, humor. Storytelling gained notoriety due to a love scene between Selma Blair and Robert Wisdom that the MPAA deemed to steamy. Rather than cutting, editing, or reshooting the scene, Solondz ( Welcome to the Dollhouse Happiness ) opted to place a red box over the actors. It was his way of protesting what he believed was censorship of his film. It is a bold move, yet it borders on the pretentious, like the rest of this movie. Storytelling consists of two stories, "Fiction" and "Non-Fiction." Both are unrelated aside from the fact that they both touch upon some creative aspect, writing for the first and filming for the second. "Fiction" is the first and more interesting segment. It revolves around Vi (Blair, Legally Blonde Down to You ), a graduate student. She is dating Marcus (Leo Fitzpatrick
