Features the legendary indian music composer, the first Asian to compose Symphony (Symphony No. 1) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) of London. This web site does a case study on his style of music. It considers each piece of musical composition, as an article from a technical journal and does a study on the usage of carnatic ragas and the unique style of orchestration that is found in his compositions.
http://www.geocities.com/lessonsfromraja

The Intended Audience
This is purely a  content oriented web page for  people who are interested in the technical nuances of  Maestro Ilayaraja’s music. This page is particularly for people who are interested in the Maestro’s presentation of Indian classical ragas in a modern context, and his unique style of orchestration, which is a balance  between the melody in Indian classical music on one hand and the harmony of the Western classical music, on the other. This page is not intended to attract people with a long list of the Maestro's popular and rare songs. It is for people who are familiar with the Maestro's style of music and are interested in knowing certain technical details about his style of  music.  The Title Story While some people listen to the Maestro’s music for peace of mind, for happiness, as an anesthetic for their sorrows, and to support a variety of other mental states, some treat his music as a technical journal.

    Usage
    Composition Form Words
THIS BOOK IS INTENDED for use in English courses in which the practice of composition is combined with the study of literature. It aims to give in brief space the principal requirements of plain English style. It aims to lighten the task of instructor and student by concentrating attention on a few essentials, the rules of usage and principles of composition most commonly violated. The book covers only a small portion of the field of English style, but the experience of its writer has been that once past the essentials, students profit most by individual instruction based on the problems of their own work, and that each instructor has his own body of theory, which he prefers to that offered by any textbook. It is an old observation that the best writers sometimes disregard the rules of rhetoric. When they do so, however, the reader will usually find in the sentence some compensating merit, attained at the cost of the violation. Unless he is certain of doing as well, he will probably do best to follow the rules. After he has learned, by their guidance, to write plain English adequate for everyday uses, let him look, for the secrets of style, to the study of the masters of literature.

Here is the thoroughly revised and updated edition of the one essential reference for all who work with wordswriters, editors, proofreaders, indexers, copywriters, designers, and publishers. Almost 200 pages longer than its predecessor, this edition reflects nearly every significant change in style, usage, procedure, and technology. It is easier to use, richer in illustrative examples, and informed everywhere by the presence of computer s in publishing, from manuscript preparation to editing, typesetting, indexing, design, and printing. The result of more than a decade's worth of continuous editing and revision, the changes to this edition fall into two broad categories. First are the changes designed to make editorial guidelines more systematic, more inclusive, more reflective of contemporary usage, and more accessible. There are major revisions in the chapter on quotations, which features a fuller discussion of speech and alternative punctuation; in the chapter on names and terms, expanded treatment of nationalities, tribes, and races; a reorganized chapter on foreign languages, with a new section on Hebrew; and a revised and enlarged tabular spelling guide for compound words and words with prefixes and suffixes.

    The Chicago Manual of Style
This new edition, the first in eleven years, is the indispensable tool for writers, editors, proofreaders, and publishers. Almost 200 pages longer than its predecessor, The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th Edition , has been thoroughly revised and updated. It's richer in illustrative examples, easier to use, and incorporates the latest developments in technology and changes in style and usage in every chapter. The new edition of the Manual meets the needs of today's writers and editors with two broad categories of changes. The first are those designed to make the Manual's editorial guidelines more systematic, easier to use, and more inclusive of alternatives. The second set acknowledges the remarkable impact of computers on all phases of publishing, from manuscript preparation to composition, design, and printing. The section on documentation has been streamlined into two chapters; the chapter on rights and permissions is thoroughly revised and updated, as are the glossary and bibliography. Guided by long standing principles of clarity, literacy, consistency, and common sense, the revisions make the new edition of the

Writing Program Library Based on Baron's radio call-in show on grammar and the vagaries of English. Baron answers questions (as "Dr. Grammar") and offers advice on dealing with the Language Police (William Safire and his ilk), the demands of politically correct language, the peculiarities of English spelling, jargon, plagiarism, and sundry other topics. 213. Baron, Dennis E. Grammar and Good Taste: Reforming the American Language. New Haven: Yale Univ. Press, 1982. After the Revolution, English supplanted Latin and Greek as the dominant language of instruction in American schools. Patriots sought to differentiate American from British English by establishing native standards of spelling, grammar, and pronunciation. Some advocated the formation of an American Academy, like the French Academy, to set these standards. The authors of popular grammar textbooks also attempted to set standards. Although no uniform "Federal grammar" emerged, the link between correct grammar and patriotism led to the association of correctness with good morals in general, and hence with social prestige. The link between grammar and morality also fostered intense anxiety about correctness that continues to this day. See: Francis Christensen, "A Generative Rhetoric of the Paragraph" [191].
