By: Deborah Bouley I assumed that substitute teaching would be a breeze. I asked myself how difficult could it be for a responsible, intelligent, 40+ year old career change graduate student to enter a classroom and deliver pre-written lessons? After all, I had over 20 years of business experience. I was a financial analyst, a sales analyst, a sales manager, a financial manager, a human resources manager, a customer service manager, and an Executive Director at some of the most profitable companies in America. I began traveling the United States for business at a time when women who did such were labeled in peculiar and sexist ways. With my education and work experience was I not fully qualified and prepared to substitute teach? Well...!!! There are no mentors or supports in the field of substitute teaching. There are few, if any, training programs to educate us in regard to what we can and cannot do and should and should not do with the future citizens of our nation. In fact, in this my second year of substitute teaching, I have never even seen a job description of what the job entails. Interestingly enough, I have never received any type of feedback in regard to my strengths and weaknesses in teaching in any of the over 175 classroom experiences I have had.

Check out my 'New Services' page. Education Man to the Rescue ! Dear Visitor, I have been running this site for three years. During this time I have helped almost 400 individuals in their search for employment. I am proud of my work and glad to have been of service to all of these potential teachers. I am presently teaching a grade 5/6 class in an innercity school and I have 32 students. Meeting the demands of these curious youngsters is proving to be a challenging task and so, I am sorry to say I am no longer able to provide direct assistance in locating work as a substitute teacher. When my workload decreases and I am able to manage my email more effectively I hope to restart my online services. Substitute Teachers and Paraprofessionals Substitutes are an important educational component in the Moorhead Area Public Schools. Teachers and paraprofessionals occasionally need a substitute for either professional or personal reasons. Principals, teachers, parents and students value a good substitute teacher or paraprofessional. Skilled substitute teachers and paraprofessionals can have a significant, positive impact on the quality of education while the permanent teacher or paraprofessional is away. To ensure that the district has a large pool of qualified substitutes available, the Human Resources office continually recruits substitute teachers and paraprofessionals. The district uses the automated Substitute Employee Management System (SEMS) to contact substitutes who have registered with the system about available positions. District employees enter their absences in the SEMS so employee leave records can be maintained, substitutes can be called, and substitute pay can be determined.

First there is the convenience of choosing when you work. You can choose to work each and every time you are called, three days a week, or only on Wednesdays and Thursdays. You can choose a particular school, or set of schools to work in. The selections are yours to make. For those of us who are in graduate school pursuing our Masters Degrees in Education, substitute teaching provides us with the experience we need to look good when we apply for permanent positions upon graduation. Plain and simple, it looks better on a resume to have teaching experience than to not have it. Another consideration is that the hours and days available for working coincide with our children. We are off when they are off. We are off for every major holiday, and even some not so known ones.

Melissa's Myriad Tips for Substitute Teachers Anyone who has ever substitute taught knows that it can be rewarding, yet hard, work. I think substitute teaching is tougher than student teaching in many aspects. At least when I was student teaching I was able to spend time with the students and develop a rapport with them. A substitute is in-and-out. Usually it's a one day shot. Often they don't know you, and you don't know them. The students are used to their classroom teacher, and then they get this "stranger" for one day. All that disruption can become more than they want to handle.... And, if that isn't tough enoughIf the classroom teacher is unhappy with what they find when they return, they can (and will) request that the substitute teacher NEVER sets foot in their room again. (I know teachers who have done this....fortunately not to me!) The flip side is, if they are happy with what they find when they return, they will personally request for the substitute the next time they have to be absent. Always, ALWAYS, follow the classroom teacher's lesson plans (or whatever substitute instructions they have left.)
