Sufism's Many Paths
Dr. Alan Godlas, University of Georgia Sufism or tasawwuf, as it is called in Arabic, is generally understood by scholars and Sufis to be the inner, mystical, or psycho-spiritual dimension of Islam. Today, however, many Muslims and non-Muslims believe that Sufism is outside the sphere of Islam. Nevertheless, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, one of the foremost scholars of Islam, in his article The Interior Life in Islam contends that Sufism is simply the name for the inner or esoteric dimension of Islam. After nearly 30 years of the study of Sufism, I would say that in spite of its many variations and voluminous expressions, the essence of Sufi practice is quite simple. It is that the Sufi surrenders to God, in love, over and over; which involves embracing with love at each moment the content of one's consciousness (one's perceptions, thoughts, and feelings, as well as one's sense of self) as gifts of God or, more precisely, as manifestations of God.

Sufism is a way to God through love. What can be considered, to some extent, a general definition of Sufism is:
Sufism is a path towards the Truth where the provisions are Love. Its method is to look solely in one direction, and its objective is God.
The sufi is one who moves towards the Truth by means of Love and devotion. Since only one who is perfect is capable of realizing the Truth, the sufi strives his utmost for Perfection. Sufis believe the only way to become perfect is to purify oneself under the training of a perfect Sufi Master.

Gurdjieff and Sufi Paths
Those who try hiking both these paths will find that they do, indeed, criss-cross here and there, run along a few ridges together, and part in other places. These paths can lead to a real destination, unlike most of the trails that meander about the trackless wastes that we call our lives. By their very nature, the Gurdjieff Work and Sufism are related. This site will explore the particulars of this relationship and the many synergies that exist between these two great teaching systems.

A SUFI RESPONSE TO POLITICAL ISLAMISM: AL-AHBASH OF LEBANON
The rise and spread of Islamist political movements have been topics of focal concern for scholars and analysts in recent decades. Since Richard Mitchell's seminal work on the Muslim Brotherhood, a plethora of writers have analyzed the attributes of both Sunni and Shi'a revivalist movements and the policies of Arab regimes and the West toward the Islamist phenomenon. Yet scant attention has been paid to the reactions generated within the larger Islamic community toward the Islamist groups and their militant offshoots. One such unnoticed source of reaction to political Islamism is the nebulous confraternity of Sufi orders ( turuq ) whose mysticism and esoteric beliefs and practices have set them apart from the exoteric revivalism and political activism of the Islamist societies, such as the Muslim Brotherhood and its many affiliates. The rivalry and controversies between Sufism and its legalist and conservative detractors go back to the early epochs of Muslim history. The Sufi orders that emerged in the crisis milieu of the 12th century represented a quest for gnosis, the mystical search for truth, in contrast to the disciplined legalism and conservatism of the ulama.

Sufi formulas and bid’ah
Question : In your 'Innovations' sections, you say it's bidah to recite, say a 100 times or something, suras hoping for reward. After reading a Sufi book by Hakim Moinuddin Chishti called 'Sufi Healing", I saw that it justified using such formulas by saying that the formulas and other things had been inspired by Allah through dreams or etc. to certain Muslims who were very close to Allah. Would this make it a part of Shariah? How can we know that they are being truthful? Is this acceptable in Islam? Answer : Praise be to Allaah.

The path of Tasawwuf (Sufism) is a path of total transformation, inward and outward and of caring not just for oneself but for all of creation. The seriousness of the teaching of Sufism and the endeavour to acquire the sweet nectar from the hives of our own selves requires learning and practicing. It is most important to collect books that relate to this teaching so that the psyche will obtain fresh and new realisations to balance the self.
So Almiraj Sufi Books is the other wing of teaching for everyone who seeks to change, because reading on the subject is one of the first steps on the path of transformation.
The time spent on the path varies according to the sincerity of the seeker and a genuine longing to experience the realities of the Truth, here and now.
