Guidance Counselors May Miss Suicide Warning Signs
A new study published in the American Journal of Health Behavior reports high school guidance counselors believe it is their job to spot teens at risk for suicide but only one-third believe they could recognize the warning signs. Assistant professor Keith King of the University of Cincinnati led the survey of 186 high school counselors. “Along with school psychologists, these are the school professionals who are the most trained in mental health issues,” says King. “If the school professionals feel they cannot identify a child at risk, what does that mean? It means kids in need are being missed.” The counselors had been working in the field an average of 11 years and had been at their present schools an average of eight-and-one-half years. They responded to 45 questions, including whether one of their students attempted suicide. 74 percent reported one or more students had attempted suicide. Two thirds (66 percent) said they had school crisis intervention teams to handle suicide attempts, while only one-third (34 percent) said suicide prevention was taught in their school curricula. “Unfortunately, many schools will not touch suicide prevention,” continued King. “They believe if they talk about it, then it will happen. However, the research does not back that belief and, in fact, is in total opposition to that.”

Suicide in Youth
Carol Watkins, MD According to the Surgeon General, a youth commits suicide every two hours in our country. In 1997, more adolescents died from suicide than AIDS, cancer, heart disease, birth defects and lung disease. Suicide claims more adolescents than any disease or natural cause. Adolescents now commit suicide at a higher rate than the national average of all ages. The rate of adolescent suicide in adolescent males has tripled between 1960 and 1980. Suicide rates for adolescent females have increased between two to three fold. There have been striking increases in suicidal behaviors among African American males, Native American males and children under 14. Much of the increase can be accounted for by deaths due to guns.

The abundance of information now available to us from sources such as newspapers, journals, and the Internet make it impossible for us to keep up. As educators there is little extra time beyond our jobs to read current events, maintain active participation in our professional associations, and find the new research or current topics in our field of either counseling or education (or both). As educators our time is important. As our busy schedules grow longer and our personal time narrows, we have to find time to maintain our professional-knowledge base. Searching the Internet can be long and time consuming so the websites we bookmark are critical to providing us information helping us succeed with everyday and long-term goals. What is ERIC?

  • Because each person is unique, there is no single reason why people choose to end their lives. However, from research we know that there are several factors that may contribute to a person engaging in suicidal behaviour. Mental disorder, most commonly depression, appears to be the most important risk factor for suicide and suicide attempts. Research from the Canterbury Suicide Project in Christchurch has found that young people who have died by suicide, or who have made a serious suicide attempt, often have shared circumstances, such as:
    • they have some underlying psychological distress or mental illness they display some recognisable mental health or adjustment difficulty before the suicide attempt immediately before the suicide attempt they may face a severe stress or life crisis that often centres around the breakdown of an emotional or supportive relationship they tend to come from disturbed or unhappy family and childhood backgrounds they tend to come from socially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
