Suriname's ethnic mix is reflected in the religious allegiances of its people. The most important Christian denominations are Roman Catholic and Moravian Brethren, but many Christian groups also practice traditional African beliefs such as obeah and winti . About 80% of the East Indian population are Hindu. Although Dutch is the official language, the vernacular Sranan (also known as Surinaams), an English-based creole, is widely spoken. Hindi, Javanese, Chinese, Djuka and Saramaccan (both English-based creoles) and various Amerindian languages are also spoken. The development of a strong national arts scene has been hampered by the fact that many of the country's intelligentsia live abroad (mostly in the Netherlands), partly because of greater economic opportunities and partly because of military repression. However, gamelan offers an insight into the cultural life of the Indonesian community; sculpture and carvings express the values of the Amerindian and Bush Negro populations. Suriname's food is an exotic mix of East Indian, Indian, Creole and Chinese cuisines; the cheapest eateries are

Suriname, land of an enormous cultural diversity and one of the few spots in the world where the tropical rain forest still completely virgin. The Republic of Suriname is the second smallest country of the South American continent (63.675 sq. miles), as well as the least explored and least densely populated tropical country in the world . 420.00 inhabitants mainly consisting of Amerindians, Afro-Surinamers or Creoles, East Indians, Javanese and Chinese. 90 percent of the Surinamese population lives in the costal area. Suriname has tremendous ecotoursim potential and in fact, was one of the first countries to carry out successful rainforest tourism in the early 70's. Suriname has major ecotourism attractions, as undisturbed and uninhabited rainforst wilderness and cultural attractions which are unique and very different from the rest of South America. The country's unusual mix of African, including the Bushnegro cultures of the interior, Asian, European and native Amerindian culture elements contribute to Suriname's ecotourism potential. These attractions offer significant opportunties for Suriname to capitalize upon its competive advantage over other tropical tourism destinations.

    Culture
Suriname’s culture is made up of many different ethnic groups and religions from around the world, each contributing part of their culture to help make the culture in present day Suriname. Suriname’s many ethnic groups, and religions make it one of the most culturally diverse places in the world. It is hard to distinguish between one specific group in Suriname because they all play an equal role in its culture. Yet, each has made huge overall impacts on the culture.
Many ethnic groups make up the population of Suriname. The largest of these ethnic groups is Hindustani, which makes of thirty-seven percent of the population. The Hindustani emigrated from India during the latter part of the 19 th century as indentured servants. While Creoles (Black and White) make up thirty-one percent of the population in Suriname. Most Creoles come from African slaves and Dutch descendants. Javanese (come from Indonesian descent) make up fifteen percent of the population in Suriname. Ten percent of the population is made of “Maroons” whose ancestors were brought over from Africa as slaves in the 17 th and 18 th century, and escaped to the interior. The other nine percent of the population is made up of Amerindian, Chinese, white and other ethnic groups.

April 11, 2003 6:36 PM Geography and Climate
Situated on the continent of South America, Suriname lies between Guyana to the west, French Guiana to the east, and Brazil to the south. The area of the country is 163,820 square kilometers, with lowlands, savanna and interior highlands. The majority of Surinamese inhabit the Atlantic coast, where most of the country's few roads are located. The densely forested interior is accessible only by air or via the north-south rivers, though rapids can limit the navigability of some rivers during the rainy season. Suriname is a tropical climate and temperatures and humidity are high. The major rainy season is from April to July, with a shorter one in December and January.
    Economy and Government
Suriname, formerly known as Dutch Guiana, became independent from the Netherlands in 1975. Suriname's history since that time has been turbulent, as various individuals and ethnic groups within the country struggled to assert political and economic control. During the 1980s, the Surinamese economy stagnated; its production and exports declined precipitously due to political instability and the armed conflict in the interior. The economy began a modest recovery in 1988 and 1989, but shrank again in 1990 and 1991. Agriculture and mining are the most important productive activities with alumina and aluminum accounting for 85 percent of Suriname's export earnings in 1990. In August 1992, an "Agreement for National Reconciliation and Development" was signed. According to this Peace Accord, the interior is to have top priority for development activities and funding.
