REMARKS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SURINAME, HIS EXCELLENCY RUNALDO RONALD VENETIAAN, ON THE OCCASION OF THE LAUNCHING OF COMMEMORATION OF THIRTY YEARS CARICOM,
13 FEBRUARY 2003, PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
Your Excellencies,
Distinguished Heads of Governments,
Honourable Ambassadors,
Special Invited Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to make some remarks on the occasion of the launching of the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of CARICOM. I would first like to take this opportunity to extend my sincerest congratulations to all member states, as well as to our associated members and partners who, during these past thirty years, have contributed to the successful realization of our prime goal of strengthening the integration of the Caribbean nations. Particular appreciation is extended to those member states who, from the very beginning, committed themselves to the integration efforts, so that the aspiration of our peoples could be realized with the establishment of the Caribbean Community in 1995, when the Treaty of Chaguaramas came into effect. In these times when things may appear fleeting, longevity is a trait to be admired. So, as the Caribbean Community celebrates thirty years of its existence, there is just cause for festivity and merriment.

TRADE
Decision-Making: Strategies, Policies, and Plans The economic policy to intensively stimulate an export-oriented production economy makes international cooperation and trade a high priority in Surname's external policy. Trade is important to the Surinamese Sustainable Human Development Model which will be operational soon. Trade will be integrated into the optimized economic, social, environmental and human development aspects of this model. Cooperation Suriname subscribes fully to the aims and principles of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Government also intensively follows the developments within other organizations such as GATT, and subscribes fully to the principles and the Plans of Action of both the Summit of the Americas held in Miami in 1994 and in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia in 1996 respectively, which also included conclusions with regard to sustainable development and trade. Within this framework, Suriname participates in the activities of Organization of American States (OAS), Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). This information was provided by the Government of Suriname to the fifth session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. Last Update: June 1997.

Bordering Brazil, Guyana, and French Guiana, Suriname is a remarkable land of pristine beauty and vibrant culture. It has one of the highest percentages of tropical forest in the world, and has received international recognition for its landmark conservation efforts. In addition to the diversity of its wildlife, Suriname also has a rich human culture, consisting of Amerindians, Maroons, Creoles, East Indians, Javanese and Dutch.
Noted travel writer William Leitch notes “if there are treasured spots to reveal to travelers, Suriname is first among them…. With respect to facilities for the study and observation of neotropical history, Suriname is unsurpassed.” We believe the best way to discover this off-the-beaten-track destination is with individuals who know the country and its people first-hand. Our leaders, Henk and Judi Reichert, worked and lived in Suriname for 20 years. Through their leadership we are able to offer you a personal in-depth introduction to this amazing country.
Our journey begins and ends in Paramaribo, the monumental center of which has recently been designated by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site. The city is known for its 17th century colonial architecture, a vast central market, and its colorful waterfront on the Suriname River. This is the cultural hub of Suriname and a perfect place to learn something of the country we will explore

Suriname: Overview Suriname
Suriname is reachable by plane from Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Curacao (Dutch Antilles), Miami (Florida, USA), Port of Spain (Trinidad), Cayenne (French Guiana) and sporadically from some cities in Brasil (e.g. Belem). Reservations for these flights should be made as early as possible since they are quite popular. All international flights arrive at the Johan Adolf Pengel Airport which is situated about 50 kilometres south of Paramaribo. Suriname is reachable by car from Guyana and French Guiana only. No roads exist between Venezuela and Guyana or between Brasil and French Guiana. Suriname is reachable by boat from the Atlantic Ocean. As far as we know, there is only one company that transports passengers from Europe to Suriname. Cargo Ship Voyages Limited, a U.K. based company, runs a regular (every 12 days) passenger service on board cargo vessels from Portsmouth, U.K, to Flushing, Netherlands, to Paramaribo, Suriname. Full details can be obtained from: Formalities A visa is required for entry into Suriname. For more information about how to obtain a visa contact your local embassy. Do not forget to take two good passport photos with you to Suriname. They are necessary for the registration process.

Employment Government Health ... South America > Suriname On the Northeast coast of South America, the Republic of Suriname is bordered by Guyana in the West, French Guyana in the East, and Brazil in the South. One of the least densely populated tropical countries in the world. Approximately 95 percent of the 420,000 inhabitants live in the capital city Paramaribo and in small cities and villages located along the coast. Suriname is ideally suited for the conservation of its unique neotropical rainforest biome. While Suriname is a relatively small country, it is internationally quite significant, because it has one of the highest percentages of tropical cover in the world with nearly 90 percent of the total area covered by forests and a rate of destruction under 0.1 percent annually. It has nine times the cover of Costa Rica, and more tropical forest than all but four African countries.
