Our Mission
A Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee farm may have a varied landscape that includes a community watershed, forest reserves, streams, and worker housing and schools.

The mission of the sustainable agriculture program is to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that live within them by developing and implementing best management practices and standards for commodity crops, providing incentives to farmers to meet those standards, and encouraging the marketing industries and consumers to support farmers who are making on-farm improvements toward sustainability. Farmers, companies, cooperatives, and landowners that participate in our programs meet comprehensive, rigorous standards for protecting biodiversity conservation and sustainability by integrating productive agriculture, conservation, workers, and local communities. By verifying that certified farms are employing best management practices, the Rainforest Alliance is helping reduce the environmental impacts and increase the social benefits of tropical agriculture. The Rainforest Alliance works with the

Alliance to combat hunger
Farmingsolutions shows how food security and sustainable livelihoods can be achieved by innovative, environmentally responsible agricultural systems without threatening biodiversity, eroding the soil base, polluting water or endangering human health.
Change must happen on a global level. How this can be implemented is shown through more than 70 examples of existing solutions around the world, demonstrating that ecologically and socially sound farming systems are not a luxury but a necessity, providing the most effective means to combat hunger.

This site contains research on cover crops for sustainable agriculture developed or published by the Exploration of Cover Crops for Sustainable Agriculture, with support from IDRC's program initiatives MINGA (Alternative Approaches to Natural Resource Management in Latin America and the Caribbean), People, Land and Water (PLAW) , and Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) in cooperation with various other agencies. This site provides empirical evidence of the contribution of cover crops to sustainable agriculture.
Research Highlights
  • Innovation in agriculture must be needs driven, not technology driven. Sustained and widespread use of cover crops (and perhaps any other soil improving practice using organic inputs) will only occur if the biomass (seeds, leaves, vines) can also be used in food and forage systems. Research should focus on this challenge Cover crops provide significant benefits to soil including nutrients, nutrient cycling, weed control, soil protection and soil improvement. These benefits vary mainly in light of management practices and climate affecting the quantity and timing of biomass produced.
