Geography and Climate
Sometimes referred to as the Switzerland of Africa, the country has magnificent mountain scenery with unique, ancient rock formations which are a source of fascination for geologists and scholars. Within the small area each feature of Africa's terrain is to be found, with the exception of desert. Swaziland is made up of four diverse areas, varying from 400 to 1800 meters above sea level, and each with its own climate and characteristics. The mountainous Highveld to the west has rivers, waterfalls and gorges with a generally temperate climate of warm, wet summers and dry winters when the temperature can rise sharply during the day, but with cold nights. The adjacent Middleveld is at a lower altitude with lush, fertile valleys and a warm climate ideal for cultivating various crops. It is here that much of the country's agriculture occurs.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Autonomy for the Swazis of southern Africa was guaranteed by the British in the late 19th century; independence was granted 1968. Student and labor unrest during the 1990s have pressured the monarchy (one of the oldest on the continent) to grudgingly allow political reform and greater democracy. This page is about the geography, climate, population and language of the Royal Kingdom of swaziland, and includes a map and links to useful sites about swaziland in Southern Africa.
http://members.tripod.com/stewart_marshall/swaziland.htm
The Royal Kingdom of Swaziland
Swaziland is a landlocked country that shares borders with Mozambique (105 km) and South Africa (430 km). It was founded by Bantu peoples from Mozambique in the 18th century and became a British protectorate when colonial rule was established in 1903. Swaziland was led to independence by Sobhuza II in 1968, and is now a dual monarchy with a King (currently King Mswati III since April 25, 1986) and Queen Mother. There are four distinct areas in Swaziland, varying from 400 to 1800 metres above sea level, each with its own climate and characteristics varying from tropical to near temperate. The economy is based on subsistence agriculture, which occupies more than 60% of the population and contributes nearly 25% to GDP. Manufacturing accounts for another quarter of GDP. Mining has declined in importance in recent years; high-grade iron ore deposits were depleted in 1978, and health concerns cut world demand for asbestos. Exports of sugar and forestry products are the main earners of hard currency. The country is heavily dependent on South Africa, from which it receives 90% of its imports and to which it sends about half of its exports. The population of Swaziland is approximately 950,000 people. English (in which government business is conducted) and Siswati are the official languages. Sixty-seven percent of the population age 15 and over can read and write.

Culture and tradition
The Kingdom of Swaziland is old and incredibly varied, its friendly and cheerful people retaining belief in the traditional rituals and ceremonies while adapting to a modern lifestyle. It is Africa's last traditional kingdom, the endurance of the monarchy giving the country its unique character. Links: National Museum Swazi Cultural Village
Scenic drives
Numerous interesting crafts are to be found in the making along many of the scenic drives. Visits can also be arranged to traditional Swazi homesteads, sangomas (traditional healers), and traditional Swazi dancing can be seen at the Swazi Cultural Village, in Mantenga Nature Reserve, about 40 kms from the hotel.
Golf
The Usuthu Golf Course adjoins our estate, and golf clubs are available for hire. The Royal Swazi Spa 18 hole championship golf course is situated in the Ezulwini Valley, about 37 km from the Foresters Arms. Information on the other golf courses in Swaziland is available on request. Links: Nature Reserves Big Game Parks
Wildlife
Swaziland's game reserves are small and uncrowded. Here one can get close to nature and see many of the smaller species of birds and animals which are often overlooked in the larger game parks, as well as the better known animals. The Foresters Arms Hotel is ideally situated for exploring all the attractions of this majestic Kingdom, and tours can be arranged on your arrival.

Macmillan Swaziland Primary Education Macmillan primary education courses have been developed by curriculum designers at the National Curriculum Centre (NCC), consultants from the Ministry of Education in Swaziland and experts in each field. Surveys are conducted to establish pupil's interests, and extensive trialling is done in schools, ensuring that each course is relevant, up to date and interesting to Swaziland pupils. All the courses meet the requirements of the syllabi drawn up by the Ministry of Education. All NCC material is accompanied by a Teacher's Guide at all levels and they are property of the Swaziland Government.
A wide range of supplementary and imported books are also available. These are ideal for use in independent schools or as additional resource material.
Geography NCC Social Studies (Grades 1 - 7)
The approach followed in these books is based on the child's natural point of interest. It is designed to develop specific knowledge, skills and values by means of pupil-orientated activities. Social Studies pupils wil find its clear layout and practical lesson most meaningful. Primary School Activity Atlas This is the first Atlas that many learners will use. It is, therefore, organised so that learners first learn about how maps are constructed and how 3D phenomena are symbolically and pictorially represented on 2D diagrams.

    Energy provision:
Production 415 mn kwh; by source: fossil fuel 49.4%; hydro 50.6%. Most electricity is purchased from South Africa. Rural households still depend heavily on wood 61%; followed by petroleum products 23%, electricity 12% and coal 4%. The Lupholohlo-Ezulwini hydroelectric project is often drought affected. A 400KV feeder line from South Africa to Maputo, Mozambique, connecting Swaziland with the South African Power Pool will greatly improve the quality of electricity supply to the country. The 15MW Komati hydroelectric station should reduce dependence on electricity imports from South Africa.
