THE LAND Geography T he Kingdom of Swaziland is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa. Covering a land area of just over 17,364 sq. km, Swaziland is the smallest country in the southern hemisphere. It is bordered by South Africa and Mozambique. Within its borders, every feature of the African continent is found, except for desert terrain. It is dividend into four distinct geographical regions running from north to south, each with its own climate and characteristics, varying from 98 to 1,800 metres above sea level. The mountainous highveld in the west has rivers, gorges and waterfalls, while the adjacent middleveld is at a lower altitude with lush, fertile valleys. In the east is the subtropical lowveld and the smallest area, Lubombo which borders Mozambique, is an escarpment, broken by gorges of three main rivers and has an average altitude of 600 metres. Climate In the highveld region the climate is generally temperate: warm, wet summers with temperatures up to 33 degrees Celsius and dry winters, when night time temperatures can reach as low as minus 4.5 degrees Celsius. Average rainfall is between 1,016 and 2,286mm. The undulating middleveld has a warmer and drier climate, ideal for crop growing. Temperatures vary between 37 degrees Celsius in the summer and 2.5 degrees Celsius in the dry winter months. Average rainfall is between 762 and 1,143mm.

In Malolotja some of the most pristine hiking trails in the world are to be found (Malolotja has more than 300 km of hiking trails) also in Maloloja one can find some of the oldest surface rock formations in the world, and the oldest mine in the world.
