Country Info Sweden Introduction Sweden General Data Sweden Maps Sweden Culture ... Sweden Time and Date Sweden Culture Back to Top The genuine rural folk traditions are disappearing with increasing settlement in urban areas. Among those still vital in Gotland, Dalarna, and various other areas are special national costumes, dances, folk music, and the like, and many traditions are retained even in urban settlements. Spring is celebrated on the last night of April with bonfires and song across the country. This is a great students' festival in university towns, such as Uppsala and Lund. The bright Midsummer Eve is celebrated around June 24, about the time of the year's longest day; in the ceremony a large pole, decorated with flowers and leaves, is placed into the ground. Some celebrations have a religious association: Advent, St. Lucia's Day, Christmas, Easter, and Whitsuntide. Pagan elements are still sometimes evident in these holiday ceremonies. Sweden has developed a modern industrial culture based on natural resources, technical skills, and a sense of quality. The people have tended to maintain provincial traditions and customs because of the isolated location of the country. Swedish society and life are characterized by simplicity and even severity resulting from geographic and economic conditions. Over the centuries, however, Swedish traders have returned with ideas and products that have been assimilated into Swedish culture. In the 18th century French influence was especially important in modifying Swedish culture.

Country Info Sweden Introduction Sweden General Data Sweden Maps Sweden Culture ... Sweden Time and Date Sweden People Back to Top Sweden’s population is composed principally of Scandinavians of Germanic descent and a relatively small number of ethnic Finns. About 17,000 Saami live mainly in the northern part of the country. Sweden’s immigrant population is increasing rapidly, with approximately 500,000 aliens living in Sweden in the early 1990s. These included Finns, people from the former Yugoslavia, Iranians, Norwegians, Danes, Turks, Chileans, and others. Many came to Sweden as guest workers. Recently, increased numbers have entered Sweden to escape the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Swedish culture through the centuries, the population is unusually homogeneous in ethnic stock, language, and religion. It is only since World War II that notable change has occurred in the ethnic pattern. Of a population of 8.6 million in the early 1990s, some 1 million were born abroad or were the children of immigrant parents. From 1970 to the early 1990s net immigration accounted for some 70 to 80 percent of the population growth. By far, most of the immigrants have come from the neighbouring Nordic countries, with which Sweden has a common labour market. Immigration from other countries is regulated, but such regulation is relaxed under certain circumstances. For instance, many immigrants from Latin America and the Middle East were allowed entry as refugees; Yugoslavs, Turks, and Greeks were recruited by industries seeking labourers. Preservation of immigrant cultures and the teaching of native languages is supported by the state.

28. Culture: A Short History Of Sweden
Short facts from Smorgasboard.
http://www.sverigeturism.se/smorgasbord/smorgasbord/culture/short-history/
A Short History of Sweden
Swedish history comprises more than 10,000 years and starts after the last glacial period. After the melting of the inland ice, the climate became warmer, and settlers seem to have arrived to the northern parts of the country from the east as well as from the south. They lived from hunting, fishing and collecting.
To make a long story short, agriculture was introduced during the Stone Age, and there was a subsequent Bronze Age followed by an Iron Age. The long process of creating political unity started about 1100 A.D.
During the course of its history, Sweden has, of course, received many important influences from abroad. Most prominent was probably the German influence during the Middle Ages, when the Hanseatic League dominated trade in northern Europe. French culture, on the other hand, was adopted at court and among the upper class in the 18th century, while German cultural influence had a revival in the 19th century.
The period from about 1750 to 1850 saw a far-reaching modernization of agriculture. If you compare a map of a rural area from the 18th century with one from today, you will get an idea of what happened in this period. On the old map, living houses, barns etc. belonging to several families were standing close together in a village, perhaps with a church in the middle of it. The cultivated area was split up into several small lots, the result of centuries of inheritance and marriages. The new map, on the other hand, shows separate farms far apart, where each farm has a few large fields around it. The old village has been split up and the farming land redistributed among the families. In addition, pasture-land that used to belong to the villagers collectively has been divided into individual lots and cultivated.

The problem
Culture

Culture is that which makes communication and misunderstanding possible, and it is also the continuously generated result of ongoing processes of communication. It is not a fixed entity, nor can it be delimited to a community of individuals. To myself, there is no doubt that I share more in terms of culture with some of my informants from anthropological fieldwork in Mauritius and Trinidad than with my next-door neighbours in Oslo. In general, as interacting human beings we are closer than ships passing in the night, but tightly knit communities with shared values and ideas are rarer than many social scientists have been wont to think. Mauritius Patrick Patrick and his brothers frequently rent video films; many of them are low-budget Hong Kong kung-fu films; others are American films dubbed in French. He says that the criterion for a good film is its ability to stir the sentiments of the audience, and both violent and romantic films are in his view capable of that.

It will be somewhat useful for my proposed short trip this summer, particularly since my partner will be involved in academic issues and a conference during our trip. I suspect there is a better book to prepare for a short visit, but I haven't found it yet. Some parts of the Swedish character as portrayed ring *very true*, especially the idea that they have the best way figured out. I've seen that my whole life with my relatives who are first generation American from Sweden, and it even persists into the second generation. (but maybe that's me too! :-) )

Scottish Culture Scotland is alive with cultural diversity and awash with gifted performers, writers and artists. Actors such as Sean Connery and Ewan MacGregor , having risen to stardom on the back of their internationally acclaimed performances, have become ambassadors for their country and the Scottish film industry. Theatre production is on a high with Edinburgh's Traverse and Glasgow's Arches companies paving the way. Leading popular musicians Rod Stewart Travis Texas Belle and Sebastian and the up-and-coming Mull Historical Society keep Scotland at the forefront of the industry. They stand alongside similarly talented but more traditional performers, the fiddler Aly Bain , accordionist Phil Cunningham , celebrated jazz musician Tommy Smith , and composer Sally Beamish From the days of Charles Rennie Mackintosh to contemporary artists Jaqueline Donachie Roderick Buchanan Lyn L–wenstein and Julie Roberts , art and design from Scotland holds a unique, always distinctive and sometimes daring appeal.

Sweden's gift to the world of cultural achievement
Say "Sweden" and many will say in return, "Ingmar Bergman." Sweden has during the past fifty years been identified with one of her most prominent cultural figures, a giant of both stage and screen. More recently, Lasse Hallström has been making a new name for Swedish film with his fanciful stories illuminated by warm personal portraits.
The buck doesn't stop with Bergman. Sweden has during the past century produced many accomplished men and women who have quickly gained international notoriety for cultural achievement. Jenny Lind's American career on the opera stage has been followed by as important contributions by Birgit Nilsson. Sweden's Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman have lit up the silver screen, succeeded more recently by Pernilla August, Lena Olin and Lena Endre.
In the visual arts, the work of multi-media artist Öyvind Fahlström is again being recognized internationally for its startling creativity. And the work spanning two centuries of novelist and playwright August Strindberg continues to make waves on stage and in print.
In this catalog of Swedish performers and artists, we shouldn't forget to include popular artists like ABBA, whose 70's pop has by this time gained cult status. Roxette, Cardigans, and Ace of Base are other Swedish pop bands who continue to get international airplay.
