DRIVING IN SWEDEN Speed Limits Speed Limits are posted everywhere. They are medium size red circles with a yellow background and black numbers. For example: If you speed in Sweden, you risk a heavy fine and maybe even losing your driving license. Sweden is 54% forest, so there are a lot of "Animal" warning signs posted. These signs must be taken seriously. You should be extra careful when driving around sunset and dawn. Alcohol Even very small amounts of alcohol can affect your driving ability. Sweden has a very strict law that entitles the Police to give a Breathalyzer test, even if there is no reason to suspect that you are driving under the influence of alcohol. If your blood level alcohol content is 0.2 promille or the content of alcohol in your exhaled breath is 0.10mg/l or more, this will result in a stiff fine, a prison sentence or both. You will also lose your driving license. Alcohol also remains in your system the day after you drink it. Do Not Drink and Drive Seat Belts Whenever you are sitting in a car, you must use a seat belt. Children under the age of seven must sit in a child safety seat. All other children must use a seatbelt. It is forbidden to use a back facing Child safety seat in a car that has a passenger side airbag. Headlights It is the Law in Sweden that you have to be seen when you are driving. Print version Geography of Sweden Despite its small population and large area, Sweden is a technologically advanced country with good infrastructure, including an efficient transportation and communications system. Geographically speaking, it is characterized by its long coastlines, large forests and numerous lakes. Sweden is one of the countries on earth located furthest from the Equator. It extends from north to south at roughly the same latitude as Alaska or – in the Southern Hemisphere – the stretch of ocean between Cape Horn in South America and the Antarctic continent. In terms of area it is similar to Spain, Thailand or California. In population, it is in the same league as Belgium, Ecuador or New Jersey. A land of ancient bedrock, Sweden was settled later than most countries; yet its national government has relatively old roots. By the 16th century Sweden had evolved into a strongly centralized nation, with Stockholm as its capital. The size of the country has changed over the centuries: Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. What is now southern and western Sweden was conquered in 1658 from the then Danish-Norwegian union. During certain periods Sweden also had provinces on the southern and eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, and even colonies in North America and the West Indies. In 1905, a nearly century-old union with Norway was dissolved, but since 1812 Sweden's borders have been unchanged and the country has been spared from war since 1814.

Sweden Geography Sweden is the fourth largest country in Europe, making it slightly larger than California. Located on the eastern part of the Scandinavian penninsula, Sweden is bordered by Norway to the west, the Gulf of Bothina and the Baltic sea to the east, and to the north and northeast by Finland ( see map ). Sweden is one of the countries farthest from the equator and the artic circle crosses the northern part of the country. It lies at about the same latitude as Alaska and is about 1,000 miles long from north to south, and about 310 miles wide. Sweden lies in a very geologically stable part of Europe. It is a land of ancient bedrock, a landscape of mountains, forests and plains, with many lakes dotting the country. The southern-most area of Sweden is a fertile region, while to the north it is a heavy wooded area. Even farther north (north of Stockholm), it becomes very icy and cold. The area around Stockholm is the countries oldest industrial region with large deposits of iron ore and other ores. Sweden is called "Land of the Midnight Sun" because of its geographical location. North of the artic circle the sun never sets from June through July. It will get close to the horizen, but will never set for those two months. Even in Stockholm, which is located south of the artic circle, summer nights can have only a few hours of semi-darkness at night. In the winter, though, the sun never shows for months. There usually is some light around midday, but not very much. This phenomenon occurs because of the tilt of the earth. In one part of the earth's orbit, the north pole is pointed at an angle towards the sun. As the earth spins, the same part of the earth stays in the light all the time. The opposite happens during the winter when the earth is at the other side of it's orbit (south pole towards sun).
