Sweden - Government
Sweden is a constitutional Monarchy, but the monarch only acts as a ceremonial head of state. A parliament (Riksdag) composed of 349 members is elected every four years; it elects the prime minister, passes laws, decides on taxes and approves the state budget. The cabinet holds office only as long as it retains the support of a majority in the Riksdag. The state authorities are comparably independent of the cabinet: their highest officials being appointed by the cabinet for six years, and usually the term is extended unless serious problems occurred in the contact between the authority and the ministry. There are laws with constitutional status , for instance: the Instrument of Government, the Parliament Act, the Succession Act, and the Freedom of the Press Act. The county councils and the 286 municipalities are obliged to provide services to their inhabitants as stipulated by law, but are independent to decide the means without interference from state authorities. Municipalities are mainly responsible for education and social service. The provinces are through the county councils

THE SWEDISH GOVERNMENT
Introduction
Every four years, Swedish citizens go to the polls to choose their representatives in the Riksdag (Swedish parliament). In the intervening period, the government in power will handle and take decisions on approximately 40,000 separate matters, large and small. It is through such decisions that the work of government affects the lives - and livelihoods - of all those who live in Sweden.
This section of our website is intended to give readers a broad insight into the workings of government. It outlines the process by which tasks are entrusted to the Government by the people and describes how the nation is governed. It also provides a general description of the structures, organisations, procedures and working methods of the Riksdag and the Government as a whole. Last but not least, it reviews the rights of the country’s citizens and explains where to find more information on a wide range of related topics. Illustration: Jakob Wegelius

Background: What is the swedish Law on Religious
Communities and how it was applied on Scientology

We were informed of this, through Swedish counsel, by the National Judicial Board on Friday. The official registrations were obtained Monday, March 13. The Church of Scientology of Sweden and local churches of Scientology in Gothenburg, Malmo and Stockholm are all separately registered. The registrations are made under a new law called the Act on Religious Communities, one of a series of laws that are implementing the separation of Church and State in Sweden. Ever since the 16th century, the Lutheran Church has held the privileged status of being the state Church. As of January 1, 2000, that status officially came to an end. The Lutheran Church is now known officially at the Church of Sweden, and it and the Church of Scientology are the first two religious communities to receive registration under the new Act. To give you a better understanding of this new law, section 1, 2 and 5 of the Act on Religious Communities states: "(1) There are provisions about freedom of religion in the Constitution and in the European Convention on Protection of the Human Rights and the Basic Freedoms."

It is governed under the constitution of 1975, which superseded the Constitutional Act of 1809 and the Parliament Act of 1866, as amended. The 1975 constitution eliminated the last vestiges of monarchical power in governing the country. The monarch remained head of state, an exclusively ceremonial post, but no longer was supreme commander of the armed forces and ceased to preside over cabinet meetings. All power was defined as emanating from the people. The constitution includes a lengthy bill of rights. Succession to the throne was opened to women in 1980.

http://www.mapzones.com/world/europe/sweden/economyindex.php
Country Info Sweden Introduction Sweden General Data Sweden Maps Sweden Culture ... Sweden Time and Date Sweden Economy Back to Top Sweden has an urban industrialized economy based primarily on extensive forests, rich iron-ore deposits, and abundant waterpower resources. Although more than 90 percent of Swedish industry is privately owned, the government exercises substantial control over the economy to moderate economic fluctuations. The national budget in 1998 included revenues of $90.9 billion and expenditures of $99 billion. Although Sweden enjoys one of the world’s highest standards of living, the country has experienced a serious recession since 1991. The Swedish government has responded with austerity measures and a reassessment of its traditional commitment to full employment and the welfare state. Steps taken include a 10 percent reduction in civil service employment. Aided by peace and neutrality for the whole twentieth century, Sweden has achieved an enviable standard of living under a mixed system of high-tech capitalism and extensive welfare benefits. It has a modern distribution system, excellent internal and external communications, and a skilled labor force. Timber, hydropower, and iron ore constitute the resource base of an economy heavily oriented toward foreign trade. Privately owned firms account for about 90% of industrial output, of which the engineering sector accounts for 50% of output and exports. Agriculture accounts for only 2% of GDP and 2% of the jobs. In recent years, however, this extraordinarily favorable picture has been somewhat clouded by budgetary difficulties, high unemployment, and a gradual loss of competitiveness in international markets. Sweden has harmonized its economic policies with those of the EU, which it joined at the start of 1995. GDP growth is forecast for 4% in 2001.
