SCOUTING IN SWEDEN THE SWEDISH GUIDE AND SCOUT COUNCIL In Sweden there are five scout associations, united in the Swedish Guide and Scout Council, and consisting of 150,000 scouts. The five associations are Svenska Scoutforbundet (The Swedish Guide and Scout Association), SMU-Scout (The Guide and Scout of the Swedish Covenant Youth), KFUK-KFUMs Scoutforbund (The Swedish YWCA-YMCA Guide and Scout Association), Nykterhetsrrelsens Scoutf6rbund, The Temperance Guide and Scout Association), and Frjlsningsarm6ns Scoutf6rbund (The Salvation Army Guide and Scout Association). These associations have many camp sites that you can visit. Amongst in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo, there are Reception Teams to receive and help you with contacts in the country. Contact The Swedish Guide and Scout Council before you come to Sweden. Scouting in Sweden has a long history, Scouting for boys was started in 1908 by Emil Wingqvist. Another pioneer was a physical education teacher from Gothenburg, Eble Lieberath. He wanted to start some form Of Youth activity for his pupils and found Baden-Powell's book "Scouting for boys" whilst traveling. He later translated it into Swedish. Two years later activities were commenced for girls as well. In 1912 the first Boy Scout association was formed and in 1913 the first Girl Guide association Popular movements such as The Temperance Movement and Revival Movements were a very important part of Swedish society in those days. They fought for better spiritual and social conditions for theirs members. They were people who had united to create something better in the current society. It was therefor, natural that these already existing youth movements such as the Temperance Movement, the YWCA and the YMCA took up scouting and guiding as part of their program, as well -as other scout associations being formed.

7. The Town Of New Sweden, Maine
and history of the town provided.......
http://www.aroostook.me.us/newsweden/index.html
Welcome to the town of
New Sweden, Maine
On July 23, 1870, a Swedish Colony was established by the State of Maine in the virgin forest of Aroostook County. Maine had appointed William Widgery Thomas, Jr. (who had served as Lincoln's Civil War Consul in Sweden) as State Immigration Commissioner. He went to Sweden, recruited the first 51 immigrants, and led them into the township that became New Sweden. Early hardships were overcome and the Colony prospered and grew into the neighboring townships of Westmanland (1879, Stockholm (1881) and the surrounding areas.
WELCOME - VÄLKOMMEN
MAINE'S SWEDISH COLONY has prepared this booklet to provide you with both an historical perspective on the Colony area, and a map-oriented tour guide to historical and current points of interest.
After a brief introduction as to how the Colony came to be, the contents are organized by townships involved: New Sweden, Stockholm, Woodland (and Perham, Connor, Caribou) Westmanland and Madawaska Lake (T16R4). For each, there is an early history followed by what exists today. The booklet also contains many old (nostalgic) and new photographs. See the Service and Cultural Directory insert for current list of local contacts, places to see, and other information. The front and back covers are shown below.
The following local historical organizations involved in this project are the Historical Societies of New Sweden, Woodland, Stockholm, and Maine's Swedish Colony, Inc. Funding assistance was provided by the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Community Foundation.

Last winter we visited the arctic north of Lapland, where the world's largest igloo, the Ice Hotel is built each year.
