The Role of Grammar
in the Teaching of Writing
to ESL College Students
Ru Zhang Bradley University More and more ESL (English as a Second Language) students come to the United States for their college education every year. "Researchers estimate that by the year 2000, ESL students will make up more than 25% of the college student population; colleges in some large cities have already reached this percentage" (Belanoff et.al. 211). It is critical that ESL teachers provide them with the kind of language skills they need to be successful in college and their future career. Marianne Celce-Murica has said:
There are currently two extreme positions in ESL concerning the teaching of English grammar. At one extreme, the proponents of audio-lingualism (Lado, 1964) and the methodologists such as Gattegno (1972, 1976) argue that we must make grammar the core of our language instruction and that we must correct all student errors. At the other extreme, methodologists such as Krashen and Terrell (1983) tell us not to teach grammar explicitly and not to correct any learner errors (Celce-Murica 4).
Celce-Murica's statement highlights the ongoing debate about grammar in ESL teaching and presents two extreme positions. We should not go to extremes. I have been teaching English as a foreign language in China for more than ten years, and I have been in a Master of Arts program in English for two semesters at Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Having been both an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher and an ESL student, I have developed a more definitive position about the role of English grammar in the teaching and learning of ESL. This paper focuses on whether traditional grammar should be taught to ESL students who come to the U.S. for higher education, and if so, what kind of traditional grammar should be taught and how.

New Premises for CTI Modern Languages
As part of the extension of the Language Institute at the University of Hull into the newly-built Ferens Building, CTI Modern Languages has recently moved into three new offices which are located on the bridge between the Ferens Building and the Larkin Building where we were housed previously. At the moment our accommodation can best be described as 'compact', but we are promised additional space once the conversion of the Larkin Building is complete. The good news for all of us is that the new building includes excellent new computer laboratories and a spacious self-access area, as well as an impressive interpreting suite.

Machine Assisted Translation in Language Learning 6 -7 December 1995, Coventry This 'expert seminar' was organised by the CTI Centre for Modern Languages, University of Hull in association with the Centre for Information Technology in Language Learning, Coventry University. It was the sixth in a series of such events for invited participants introduced by the CTI Centre for Modern Languages in 1990. The seminar programme included speakers involved in professional translation and speakers involved in teaching and research in higher education, and provided a forum for discussion between the two.

1 B EOWULF: T HE P OEM The poem called Beowulf was composed some time between the middle of the seventh and the end of the tenth century of the first millennium, in the language that is today called Anglo-Saxon or Old English. It is a heroic narrative, more than three thousand lines long, concerning the deeds of a Scandinavian prince, also called Beowulf, and it stands as one of the foundation works of poetry in English. The fact that the English language has changed so much in the last thousand years means, however, that the poem is now generally read in translation and mostly in English courses at schools and universities. This has contributed to the impression that is was written (as Osip Madelstam said of The Divine Comedy ) ‘on official paper’, which is unfortunate, since what we are dealing with is a work of the greatest imaginative vitality, a masterpiece where the structuring of the tale is as elaborate as the beautiful contrivances of its language. Its narrative elements may belong to a previous age but as a work of art it lives in its own continuous present, equal to our knowledge of reality in the present time.

    1 Introduction
Students studying linguistics for the first time often have misconceptions about what it is about and what it can offer them. They may think that linguists are authorities on what is correct and what is incorrect in a given language. But linguistics is the science of language; it treats language and linguistic behavior as phenomena to be studied scientifically. Linguists want to figure out how language works . They are no more in the business of making value judgments about people's language than geologists are in the business of making value judgments about the behavior of the earth.
    The book: organization and conventions
    Organization
    Languages
Most linguistics texts draw their examples from an unconstrained set of languages. This has the disadvantage that students are left with little sense of how the different aspects of each language fit together. It also invites the kind of errors that may crop up when linguists rely on examples from a wide variety of other linguists. For these reasons, almost all of the examples in this book are limited to a set of ten languages. You can see the word for 'language' in each of these ten languages in the upper-left corner of the Table of Contents page, and, together with words in seven other languages, at the top of each page. If you're interested in knowing more about these languages, each is described briefly in

Though a zoologist by trade, I have always been intrigued with astronomy and since childhood have wondered about life on other planets.
Throughout college I have been fortunate to be able to study astrobiology with terrific and influential professors. While completing my Bachelor's degree in Zoology I had the opportunity to take my first S.E.T.I. (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) class right here at The University of Washington. I found that my biological science background provided a strong foundation for thinking about ways in which life might evolve elsewhere in the galaxy. After that first class I was really hooked.
