Content by Andrew Oon Synchronized Swimming Today Synchronized Swimming Routines Judging Synchronized Swimming Scoring ... Glossary of Terms Back in the late 19th century, synchronized swimming was known under different names such as artistic, ornamental, scientific, figure or pattern swimming as well as water ballet, and the first "artistic swimmers" were male actors who staged dancing displays in water as a form of entertainment. The first record of competition was a men's event in Berlin in 1891. But by the turn of the century, women had moved toward the forefront of synchronized swimming. The origins of synchronized swimming as we know it today are rooted in the swimming safety courses at the Royal Life Saving Society. In 1924, a group of Canadian women, led by national-calibre water polo player and diver Margaret "Peg" Seller, developed what they called "ornamental swimming" from lifesaving and swimming techniques. Within a year, rules were established and the first competitions were organized. The world 's first provincial championship was held in Montreal where Seller was crowned champion. From that point, synchronized swimming's popularity continued to grow, especially in the United States. International competitions would soon follow. Synchro was a demonstration sport at the 1951 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires and at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. FINA, the international federation for aquatic sports embraced synchro in 1954. It was featured at the inaugural World Swimming Championships in 1973 in Belgrade and was accepted into the official Olympic program as a woman's event in 1984.

We are sadly lacking in information about what went on prior to 1995. Last year we gave a shortened version of what we at the present time knew of the history of Mermettes. Also, last year the college kindly gave us new mailing labels for all the alums they had identified as previous Mermettes. We hoped to have each send us a history of experiences with the club. The enclosed picture is from the show done March 3, 1953. In the early 1980s the club was very successful at the NICA ( National Institute for Creative Aquatics) National Championships. The Duet of Chris and Jen Wrigley won many awards, and the team received many awards as well. For anyone coming to visit these award certificates are still featured in the swimming pool office. They were found in an old storage area in Adair Gym during some renovation. We were able to present Chris Wrigley Porter her certificates at a show at school. Currently Chris is teaching Synchronized Swimming at the new Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News where we are hosting the 2001 Collegiate synchronized Swimming Championship. Chris found Synchro again when she saw the Daily Press article promoting the 2000 South Zone Championship which was held at Midtown this past March. It is our dream that this program grow and grow.

Donalda Smith — Synchronized Swimming Donalda Smith’s name has become synonymous with the sport of synchronized swimming, not only within Canada but internationally. Her efforts and dedication spanned five decades and helped create a Canadian system that has produced gold medals for our country at world championships and Olympic Games. A judge and official for more than 33 years, Smith helped synchronized swimming evolve into the sport it is today. She was one of the driving forces behind developing the first synchro manuals in Canada, publications that helped to set the standard for the sport internationally. Donalda Smith was a teacher when she moved to Vancouver from the prairies in 1934, She was also a swim and life-saving instructor. But Donalda didn’t get involved in a sport she at first knew only as "fancy swimming" until 1953 when her daughter, Margaret MacLennan, decided to try synchro and convinced her mother to coach herself and a friend. Smith, who died in November of 1998, went on to make valuable contributions to the sport in many areas including as a coach, judge and official. From 1972 to 1980, she served on the technical committee of FINA, the sport’s international governing body.

It is was used by the general public before the Games, and during the Olympics it hosted the swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo events. Juan Antonio Samaranch, the president of the International Olympic Committee, described the new Sydney International Aquatic Centre as the "best swimming pool I have ever seen." It's easy to understand why Samaranch, as well as countless Australians, are excited about the Aquatic Centre. The $380 million facility is one of the largest indoor complexes of its kind in the world. And it features an innovative HVAC system driven by a central plant supplied by YORK International Australia that cools both the large spectator seating area and the main competition area below. "The HVAC system is unique because it involves creating a personal comfort envelope around each spectator rather than air-conditioning the entire main-pool enclosure," said Mark Ganley, general manager, sales and production, YORK Australia. "There is a significant temperature gradient between the spectator and pool areas."

... Wrestling Synchronized Swimmers Repeat Tradition of Success The Buckeyes won the 2002 U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championship Sept. 16, 2002 Twenty-two. That's the number of national championships won by Ohio State's synchronized swimming program since 1977. Twenty-two championships in twenty-six years is quite an accomplishment. Ohio State head coach Linda Litcher-Witter is no stranger to success, as she has coached the Buckeyes to five national championships and two national runners-up finishes in her seven years as the Buckeye mentor. Litcher-Witter, only the third Ohio State head coach in program history, has continued not only a winning tradition, but also is continuing to build recognition the sport is receiving at a national level. "When I came here, there was already an amazing program established," Litcher-Witter said. "(Ohio State) had won more national championships than any other school. I wanted to keep the program going and take it to another level. Synchronized swimming is an emerging sport, so it is also a goal to help develop other programs in the country and try and get other Big Ten schools to include synchronized swimming in their athletic department." Litcher-Witter admits how difficult training is if you're a synchronized swimmer. It's harder that it looks, and it looks extremely hard if you are a spectator.

history of the Academy. of the Aquatic Artist Newsletter; and Henry Gundling; formermember of the USA olympic Games Committee for synchronized swimming.
http://www.aquatic-art.org/history.htm
History of the Academy Aquatic art, an outgrowth of synchronized swimming, water ballet, ornamental, rhythmic, and scientific swimming was officially created with the formation in 1955 of the International Academy of Aquatic Art (IAAA). The Academy is dedicated to the development of "creative swimming at it's best". The people forming the IAAA were among the pioneers in synchronized swimming within the United States and Canada. Realizing the artistic potentials of this activity, the Academy's founders felt the need to form an organization to encourage and assist in the development of the creative and artistic aspects of aquatics. The incorporators were Mary Derosier, former national AAU Synchronized Swimming Chairman; Richard J. Dodson, founder of the Aquatic Artist Newsletter; and Henry Gundling; former member of the U.S.A Olympic Games Committee for Synchronized Swimming. The philosophy of the academy allows swimmers to develop the "sport" of synchronized swimming one step furtherto that of art. Compositions are rated against high standards of excellence, not against each other. Therefore, all participants in an event could receive the highest rating.
