SYRIA BRIEF HISTORY
History:
Pax Romana Despite hopes for independence, a French mandate over Syria was declared by the League of Nations in 1922. This resulted in much hostile feeling towards France by the Syrian people. A long struggle ensued and, when the British left Syria in 1946, the country became both a republic and a charter member of the United Nations. Political instability followed the birth of the republic, with one military coup succeeding another. In 1963 the Ba'ath party came to power and the country began to stabilize. Another coup in 1970 brought to power the then Defence Minister, Hafez al-Assad, who has remained as President to the present day Government: Syria is a Republican Democracy with an Executive led by a President. It has a Cabinet, one House of Parliament and an independent judiciary. Members of Parliament and local government counsellors are all directly elected by the people. Syria
    HISTORY
Archaeologists have demonstrated that Syria was the center of one of the most ancient civilizations on earth. Around the excavated city of Ebla in northern Syria, discovered in 1975, a great Semitic empire spread from the Red Sea north to Turkey and east to Mesopotamia from 2500 to 2400 B.C. The city of Ebla alone during that time had a population estimated at 260,000. Scholars believe the language of Ebla to be the oldest Semitic language. Syria was occupied successively by Canaanites, Phoenicians, Hebrews, Arameans, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Nabataeans, Byzantines, and, in part, Crusaders before finally coming under the control of the Ottoman Turks. Syria is significant in the history of Christianity; Paul was converted on the road to Damascus and established the first organized Christian Church at Antioch in ancient Syria, from which he left on many of his missionary journeys. Damascus, settled about 2500 B.C., is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It came under Muslim rule in A.D. 636. Immediately thereafter, the city's power and prestige reached its peak, and it became the capital of the Omayyad Empire, which extended from Spain to India from A.D. 661 to A.D. 750, when the Abbasid caliphate was established at Baghdad, Iraq.

  • 66. A Brief History Of Syria
A brief history of modern syria. syria fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1516and remained a part of their Ottoman Empire for four centuries.
    http://www.damascus-online.com/history/brief.htm
A brief history of modern Syria Syria fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1516 and remained a part of their Ottoman Empire for four centuries. During this period, Syria witnessed great deterioration in economic, social, and political fields. In 1916, the Arabs took the opportunity of World War I to start their revolution against the Turkish rule with British help. On 6 May 1916, the Ottoman authorities hanged tens of Syrian nationalists in Damascus and Beirut, accusing them of resistance. The Arab revolution armies under leadership of Sharif Hussein of Mecca soon achieved victory over the Turks, and in early 1918, Arab and British armies entered Damascus ending 400 years of occupation. Later in 1918, Syria was declared an independent kingdom under King Faisal I, son of Sharif Hussein. However, France and Britain had their own plans in mind. In an agreement known as the Sykes-Picot agreement, they decided to divide the Middle East into French and British spheres of influence. Syria was to be put under French mandate. In early 1920, French troops landed on the Syrian coast, after several battles with poorly equipped Syrian rebels, they managed to get the country under their control. In 1923, the League of Nation officially agreed on the French mandate over Syria. The Syrians decided to resist the new occupiers. In 1925 they declared their revolution against the mandate. Several battles took place in the southern Jabal al-Arab and Damascus region. The capital was severely damaged during French air raids in retaliation for the city's support for rebels. It was until 1936 when France finally accepted to give Syria partial independence according to the Franco-Syrian treaty signed in Paris, but French troops remained on the Syrian soil and continued to influence the Syrian policies. During World War II, Syria witnessed military confrontation between French troops loyal to the Vichy government, allied with the Germans, and Free French troops allied with the British. In 1941, the British army, along with its French allies, occupied the country, and promised full independence when the war ends.

    A Brief History of Syria
A brief history of Syria , officially known as Al Jumhuriyah al Arabiyah as Suriyah, or the Syrian Arab Republic
    The first concept
Like a game of "Hot Potato," the country was passed from the Assyrians to the Chaldeans and then the Chaldeans to the Persians (538 BC) before Alexander the Great made it a part of his empire (in 333 and 332 BC).
The Seleucids eventually came to control all of what is now know as Syria, as well as the region then known as Palestine, and much of the rest of western Asia. Finally , in 64 BC, the unstoppable tide of the Roman Empire swept over the Middle East and Syria was made a province. When the vast Roman dominions were divided into two sections (in 395 AD), Syria became and remained a Byzantine province for almost 250 years.
With the spread of the Islamic Empire Damascus , in 661, became the seat of the powerful Omayyid caliphs. It was during this time, under the reign of Abdul Malek bin Marwan and his sons, that Damascus became one of the most important and glamorous cities of the Muslim world, not to mention the known world. The Omayyid Empire would eventually stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the borders of China, surpassing even the Roman Empire in terms of area. (A interesting bit of trivia: It was during this time that the first postal system was developed.) Damascus, with its new, great mosque , was at the center of this empire. Culture, architecture, art, science and administration prospered.

    Against most Fears
By Moshe Maoz, Yediot Ahronot, 17 December 1995. Israeli fears that a peace settlement involving withdrawal from Golan Heights will give Syria a strategic advantage.
This Ain't the Road of Peace
By Tanya Reinhart, Yediot Axaronot, 16 January 2000. Without the Golan Heights, Syria will not lift a finger against the Hizbolla guerilla forces that fight the Israeli army in Lebanon, and if Israel withdraws from Lebanon without peace with Syria, there is no guarantee that the Hizbolla will not direct fire to the Northern-Galilee parts of Israel.
Israel Braced For Possible War With Syria
By Uzi Mahnaimi, Tel Aviv, Sunday Times, (UK), 17 December 2000. The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) fears the conflict with Palestine could spread beyond Israel's borders to involve Syria and risk triggering a spiral of confrontation in the region. Hezbollah, the Syrian-backed Lebanese militia, launched attacks across the border. The army believes Hezbollah could decide to support the Intifada.

    Introduction: A Neglected Topic
from Greater Syria: The History of an Ambition
Her Majesty's Government has stated that it considers Syria to be the military key of Asiatic Turkey.
    - Lord Palmerston, 1840 On first entering Syria, the observant traveler will probably be startled to go through passport control and notice a military map of Syria on the wall, for this map contains several anomalies. It shows the Golan Heights under Syrian control, though they have been occupied by Israel since 1967. Syria's boundaries with Lebanon and Jordan appear not as international borders but as something called "regional" borders. Israel does not even exist; instead, there is a state called Palestine. And Palestine is separated from Syria by a line designated a "temporary" border". Finally, the province of Hatay, a part of Turkey since 1939, appears to be included in Syria; only on close inspection can one see the "temporary" border between it and Syria. The many inaccuracies on this map reflect the Syrian rulers' profound unwillingness to accept the actual size and shape of the country they administer. They remember that until 1920, "Syria" referred to a region much larger than the Syrian Arab Republic of today, a region that stretched from the borders of Anatolia to those of Egypt, from the edge of Iraq to the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of today's states, the Syria of old comprised Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan, plus the Gaza Strip and Alexandretta. This larger land, known since 1920 as Greater Syria, is what they dream of reclaiming.
