FRED DANNER
USATT Hall of Fame Inductee (1993) by USATT Historian Tim Boggan - Fred once said modestly that he was "possibly the most effective USATT Executive Committeeman [that is, Director on the USATT Board of Directors] in the history of U.S. table tennis." Umm, perhaps. At any event, I certainly do agree that he deserved to be inducted into our USATT Hall of Fame as an Official, for he was not only a thinker but a doer. A table tennis workaholic, he made countless local, state, regional, national, and international contributions. In 1961 he founded the Huntington, Long Island Table Tennis Clubwhich is still operating today. And in that year, too, he became president of the LITTA. Thereafter he founded more L.I. clubs, and encouraged workers of all kindsthose often behind the scenes like Fred himself who help to make tournaments successful and often get little or no thanks for all their time and effort. Danner was one of the Operations Managers for the 1972 U.S. Open. It had (and Fred himself always had such figures at his fingertips) 725 players in 46 events, played over 40 tables, for a total of 2,275 matches. He was also Operations Manager for the '72 "Ping-Pong Diplomacy" People's Republic of China Tour-Stop Match at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum.

W hat is Table Tennis?
You probably have heard of "Ping Pong" , maybe you've even played ping pong before. Basically, Table Tennis is a more professional way of playing ping pong. Using two "paddles" or "bats" and a table, a ball is kept in motion for as long as possible, until one of the players makes an error, or is unable to retrieve the ball due to some physical circumstance, like they are unable to reach it, they can't get there in time, or the ball is just moving too fast for them to react. Table Tennis is becoming more and more popular in the United States, as people realize that anyone from 8 to 80 can enjoy a great game of ping pong!

HISTORY OF TABLE TENNIS Table Tennis is believed to have begun in England during the 12 th century as a spin-off of "Royal Tennis" and was popular as a parlor game in Victorian homes. Equipment was made from various homemade articles, such as cardboard for rackets, books as nets and the ball was usually a ball of string. It is believed that in the late 1880’s, an American sporting goods manufacturer by the name of Parker Brothers, tried their hands at making "official" equipment. At that time, Parker Brothers was already exporting "Indoor Tennis" equipment to England. Equipment was still very primitive and balls were then solid rubber or cork and usually covered with material to prevent damage to furniture. Plastic balls were introduced to the game after an Englishman named James Gibb, visited America and discovered children playing with small plastic toy balls. He brought some back to England and used the plastic balls for table tennis. To his surprise, it gave an unexpected, overwhelming boost to this already popular game. After years of being called Gossima, Film-Flam and Whiff-Whaff, the name "Ping Pong" was finally adopted as a trade name by Parker Brothers because of the new sound these plastic balls made when they hit the table and the racket. Introduction of the
International Table Tennis Federation This popular table game began to spread wildly and was introduced to Japan, China, Korea, India and South Africa, presumably by British Army Officers who were stationed there. By 1910, "Ping Pong" had also become very popular in Central Europe.

    History of Table Tennis
    JAN-OVE WALDNER (SWE)
Extracted from the ITTF Web site (19th March 2000)
Table Tennis is one of the largest indoor sports in the world. Despite this it is still considered a minority sport, even in its county of origin, England. The English Table Tennis Association is the governing body for the sport in this county and is one of the oldest national associations in the world. It was also one of the founder members of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) which is the world’s governing body. Since its development from lawn tennis in the nineteenth century, table tennis has come a long way. It appears to have initially been a home-made pastime played largely by university students. The first patent for the game was registered by Charles Barter in 1891 after he purchased some celluloid balls on a trip to America. He quickly introduced an alternative the alternative to cork and rubber balls which were being used at the time. Several manufacturers commenced production of the game under various names including ‘Gossima’ , ‘Whiff Waff’, and ‘Flim Flam’, even ‘Table tennis’. With the introduction of hollow , vellum-covered rackets the dreaded moniker ‘ping pong’ was born. This was manufactured by the famous games company John Jacques Ltd. The first tournaments were organised as early as 1901 with entries totaling 300 and prize money of £25. This saw the foundation of the Ping Pong Association which later became known as the Table Tennis Association in 1922. The games was first introduced to Asia in 1902 when a visiting salesman took the game back to Japan..

By Niklas Schoier, a former elite table-tennis player who under the name of
Niklas Persson won four junior European championships and was a member of
the Swedish table-tennis team in the early 1980:s. Here, he appeals in an
open letter to his friend and former teammate J-O Waldner to reconsider his
position on China's application for the Olympic Games.
Jan-Ove Waldner, you have ended up in a distressing situation, and probably
you are aware of it. "Naive, greedy, or both?" asks Torbjörn Peterson in his
column, "J-O Waldner, political dynamite" (DN July 2) - and you should
straighten the question marks in some direction!
I think that you feel deeply obliged to several people in the table-tennis world. People who helped you, supported you, honored you, put money on you. Many have contributed to the fact that you certainly feel that your latest 20 years as a professional sportsman have been meaningful.
