History
The history of table tennis is something of a mystery. While no one can debate its popularity, the date of its founding is uncertain. The sport, which most believe originated in England as an after-dinner amusement in the 1800s, attracts more than 40 million competitive players worldwide and many millions more who play for recreation. Formerly known as Gossima, Flim-Flam, Whif-Whaf and Ping-Pong, table tennis reached the height of its popularity in the early 20th century, but faded from the foreground until making a strong comeback in the 1920s. Table tennis has been an Olympic sport since 1988.

Table Tennis Trials Slated
The U.S. Olympic hopefuls well meet in the city of Flint, Mich., February 21-23, for the 1996 USA Olympic Trials. Top male athletes to watch for will be: Jim Butler (Augusta, Ga.), David Zhuang (East Brunswick, N.J.), Khoa Nguyen (Santa Clara, Calif.), Sean O'Neill (McLean, Va.), Todd Sweeris (Potomac, Md.), and Danny Seemiller (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Hoping to add his name to the list is Darko Rop (Houston, Texas), who is currently awaiting U.S. citizenship. Rop, who is originally from Belgrade Yugoslavia, is presently scheduled to be awarded citizenship February 26th, just three days after the completion of the trials. A petition has been filed by USA Table Tennis, to the International Olympic Committee to allow Rop to compete in the trials despite not being a citizen. Danny Seemiller, who will take his third shot at the Olympic squad, is the oldest in the field, at age 42. Seemiller competed at the 1995 USA Table Tennis Nationals in Las Vegas, in December, and earned a second place trophy in the men's doubles along with partner David Zhuang. On the women's side, the top contenders include Amy Feng (Wheaton, Md.), Lily Yip (Metuchen, N.J.), Wei Wang (Pasadena, Calif.), Anita Zakharyan (Glendale, Calif.) and Virginia Sung (Plainsboro, N.J.). Feng was crowned national women's singles champion after defeating Lily Yip in the women's finals in Las Vegas, last December. Feng also earned second in the women's doubles and first in the mixed doubles in that competition.

Table Tennis
What other Olympic sport can you practice in your basement, and how much fun is it? Apparently I'm a pretty lucky table tennis player to live here in Colorado Springs (except for the lack of atmospheric density, which tends to make the tables seem smaller). In addition to the U.S. Olympic Training Center (the best players in the country were here for the Festival in July '95), there are two good places to play here in town. Sometimes folks drop in from Denver, Wyoming, and New Mexico to play here! After that, you might want to check out A World of Table Tennis . To learn more about the sport, link to Table Tennis The Sport
C.C. Tiger Hockey
March, 1996, the Colorado College Hockey Tigers made it to beyond regulation in the last (championship!) college hockey game of the year. They lost to Team Nike, er, Michigan, 4-3, in overtime. In reaching beyond the 3rd period of the final game, the Tigers accomplished what no team has ever done before: 3-peat as W.C.H.A. champion.
