(Written by Master Park and Master Han) 3. Present day Taekwondo. Upon liberation of Korea from the Japanese colonial rule after World War II, Taekwondo began its new prosperity. Martial art experts opened their Taekwondo gymnasiums all over the country after Korea regained its independence in 1945, martial artists associated many different names of the traditional Korean martial art: Soobakdo, Kongsoodo, and Tangsoodo, resulting in Taekwondo in 1954. In 1961 Taekwondo was called Taesoodo, when the Taesoodo association was formed on 16th September. The Taesoodo Association changed its name to the Korean Taekwondo Association on 5th August, 1965. The Taekwondo Association was accepted as an official member of the Korean Amateur Sports Association on 20 June 1962. Taekwondo was entered as a demonstration sport of the 44th National Games on 24th October, 1963 and then as an official event for the 45th National Games on 3 September 1964. On 28th October 1966, the first Taekwondo competition for the Winning of the President's Flag was held and following the nomination of Taekwondo as a national martial art in 1971, the present Kukkiwon was founded in 1972 to be used as the central gymnasium as well as the site of various Taekwondo competitions. On 28 May 1973 the World Taekwondo Federation was established, currently having 108 countries as its members. In 1973 the biennial World Taekwondo Championships was organized.

MEDIA RELEASE 25 November 1998 ASC SHARPENS ITS FOCUS ON BEST OLYMPIC CHANCES "While there is an expectation that sports which were successful in Atlanta will perform well in Sydney, other sports receiving OAP support have improved to the level where they are also expected to be medal chances in Sydney," she said. The Minister said that it came as no surprise that traditional achievers such as swimming, hockey, rowing, canoeing, cycling and sailing received a major share of funding. She added that lesser known sports such as archery, baseball and taekwondo received significant funding on the basis of medal potential. Funding recommendations for each sport were prepared on performance guidelines and, where appropriate, took into account additional needs identified by the sports, such as extra international competition, new equipment and additional sports science support to make the difference between now and the Games. Ms Kelly said the sports will be given flexibility in their use of funds, and she was confident that the OAP funding was being directed to those teams and athletes who had the best chances of success in 2000. "The significant support provided by the Federal Government under the OAP will ensure that Australia will have the best prepared Australian Olympic team ever," she said.

New sports make rousing debuts
By JIM SLATER
SYDNEY (October 1, 2000 7:02 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Splishity-splash. Boing Boing Boing. Step two, three, kick. Zzzzzap. Newcomers to the Olympic sporting family sure made a lot of noise at Sydney. Synchronized diving, trampoline, taekwondo and triathlon joined the ever-expanding circle of Olympic events at the Games of the 27th Olympiad, which concluded here Sunday, and each was a well-received debutant. Divers enjoyed having some company in the spotlight atop the 10m platform and 3m springboard, performing their flips and twists in side-by-side routines. "I'm very happy synchronized diving was introduced," said Russian diving star Dmitry Sautin. "It's very handsome and very pleasant to look at." Sautin and partner Igor Lukashin captured men's platform gold. Sautin also took silver in the springboard duet event plus a silver and a bronze in the traditional solo events. The four new diving events helped increase China's haul to a unprecedented five golds from the diving well and gave a chance for solo competitors to work together for the first time as duos in quest of gold.

NICE HIGH LEVEL SPORTSMEN
SPORTSMEN RECOGNITION
The national high level sport system aims at helping France teams to stand out at milestone international competitions (Olympic Games, World Championship, European Championship).
Since 1982 the Youth and Sports Ministry has been taking the census of the best sportsmen in Olympic sports or the sportsmen whose high level has been recognised by the National Commission for High Level Sport. This recognition is made by drawing up the National List of High Level Sportsmen (around 5 800 in 1998).
The admission to the lists is yearly.
There are different categories of high level sportsmen:
SENIOR
stands for the groups preparing for major short term international events: Olympic games, World Championship, European Championship.
ELITE
comprehends sportsmen of the SENIOR category who have had good results at milestone competitions such as the Olympic Games, the World Championship, the European Championship; the admission to the ELITE category is valid for two years.
YOUTH
represents gifted sportsmen who are already taking part in international competitions and are preparing medium term sport events for three or four years.

http://www.wtkdsong.com/WTKDSong/tkd_present.htm
Present Day Tae Kwon Do Upon liberation of Korea from the Japanese colonial rule after World War II, the Korean people began returning to thoughts of self-reliance and the traditional folkloric games resumed their popularity. Song Duk Ki, the aforementioned master of taekkyondo, presented a demonstration of the martial arts before the first Republic of Korea President Syngman Rhee, on the official's birthday anniversary, thereby clearly distinguishing taekwondo from the Japanese karate that was introduced by the Japenese rulers. Martial arts experts began opening their taekwondo gymnasiums all over the country. After the end of the Korean War (1950-1953), taekwondo was popularized among the Dan grade belt holders within the country, and about 2,000 taekwondo masters were dispatched to more than 100 countries for foreign training. Following the nomination of taekwondo as a national martial art in 1971, the present Kukkiwon was founded in 1972 for use as the central gymnasium and the site of various taekwondo competitions. A year later, on May 29, 1973, the World Taekwondo Federation came into existence, an organization that now boasts over 108 countries as its members. In 1973, the biennial World Taekwondo Championships were organized. In 1975, taekwondo was accepted as an official sport by the U.S. Amateur Athletes Union (AAU) and was admitted to the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF). In 1976, the International Council of Military Sports (CISM) adopted taekwondo as an official sports even, and in 1979, the President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) was elected chairman of the World Federation of non-Olympic sports. The WTF became an IOC recognized sports federation in 1980, making taekwondo an Olympic sport. The adoption of taekwondo as an official event was followed by the World Games in 1981, the Pan American games in 1986, and the 2000 Olympics held in Sydney Australia.

History of Taekwondo As it is literally translated from the Korean, Tae means "to kick" or "to strike with the foot", Kwon means "fist" or " to strike with the hand", and Do means "discipline" or "art", i.e. "the way of foot and fist. " Modern Taekwondo Modern day Taekwondo, as it has come to be developed over the years, is a unique martial art incorporating both the quick, straight line movements that characterise the various Japanese systems and the flowing circular movements of most Chinese styles. But more than this, what truly distinguishes Taekwondo is its varied and uniquely powerful kicking techniques. It is this prominent use of leg and kicking techniques that sets Taekwondo apart from all other martial arts systems. Yet, Taekwondo is far more than simply a system concerned with physical prowess, for it is also an art directed toward the character development of its students. Back to top First Practice (37 BC) The earliest records of Taekwondo practice date back to about 37 BC during this time, Korea was divided into three kingdoms: Silla, Kyuryo, and Baekche. Evidence of the practice of Taekyon (the early known form of Taekwondo) has been found in paintings on the ceiling of the Muyong-Chong, a royal tomb from the Koguryo dynasty.

TAEKWONDO UNION WOES DELAY KEY OLYMPIC STATUS HEARING By Mike Spence
Reprinted with permission from Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph Plagued by numerous internal battles, as well as claims and counter claims of fiscal mismanagement, U.S. Taekwondo Union officials were forced to delay an important hearing on the organization's Olympic status. Former USTU president Hwa Chong wrote to the U.S. Olympic Committee on Dec. 5 asking for postponement of a Dec. 6 hearing with the USOC's membership and credentials committee. The hearing was important because the USTU was hoping to be elevated from Pan American to Olympic status since taekwondo has been added to the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. The change in status is significant for several reasons. Olympic-level sports bodies receive more prestige, money and representation from the USOC. In the USTU's case, it expected to receive a grant of $258,064 from the USOC during the 1997 fiscal year, as well as an international competition grant of $9,457, in its new status as an Olympic sport. Because the hearing was postponed, the USTU remains a Pan Am level sport. The USOC informed USTU officials the organization's grant for 1997 was being reduced to $178,100.
