"I don't remember that I ever was President." - Taft hated his Presidency, but loved his job as Chief Justice - he said this as he was elected his latter job. William Howard Taft on a sense of humor (0:37) ( AU WAV biography
Distinguished jurist, effective administrator, but poor politician, William Howard Taft spent four uncomfortable years in the White House. Large, jovial, conscientious, he was caught in the intense battles between Progressives and conservatives, and got scant credit for the achievements of his administration. Born in 1857, the son of a distinguished judge, he was graduated from Yale, and returned to Cincinnati to study and practice law. He rose in politics through Republican judiciary appointments, through his own competence and availability, and because, as he once wrote facetiously, he always had his "plate the right side up when offices were falling." But Taft much preferred law to politics. He was appointed a Federal circuit judge at 34. He aspired to be a member of the Supreme Court, but his wife, Helen Herron Taft, held other ambitions for him.

But experts contend the event helped establish closer personal ties to Japanese corporate leaders and politicians, something that must happen if Ohio is to attract more Japanese investment. Vintage Recordings of Presidential Elections Prior to 1908, the voice of a Presidential candidate would be heard from the back of a campaign train or on a rare dedication of a monument or park. By in 1908 something new happened that would forever change the face of politics. The favorite invention of Thomas Edison, the phonograph came onto the political scene and for the first time people in rural communities could hear the actual voices of the competing candidates. What a thrill it was for the first time to hear a candidate discuss an issue, rather than read about it on the cold black and white pages of the daily newspaper. These elections were a major stepping stone for the public, the Presidency and of course the now indispensible phonograph, born from the mind of America's greatest inventor. I applaud the editors for embarking on such an ambitious project and Ohio University Press for publishing this important collection. Ohio History
T he inaugural volume of The Collected Works of William Howard Taft is composed of two of his earliest books, Four Aspects of Civic Duty and Present Day Problems Based on a series of lectures delivered at Yale in 1906, Four Aspects of Civic Duty is an attempt by then Secretary of War Taft to bring to the attention of his audience the importance of civic duty from the perspective of the university graduate, the judge on the bench, the colonial administrator, and the national executive branch of government. His remarks were drawn from his own experience, while at the same time he laid down the principles of citizenship with which all people could identify. In Present Day Problems The Collected Works of William Howard Taft

Johnson sexual John F. Kennedy social Dwight D. Eisenhower Harry S. Truman 6 or 1 Franklin D. Roosevelt social Herbert Hoover possibly 1? Calvin Coolidge possibly 5? self-pres. Warren G. Harding Woodrow Wilson William Howard Taft Theodore Roosevelt *Clinton's type is controversial. Tom Condon considers Clinton a 9 with both wings, while Riso and Hudson view Clinton as a 3. You can read Condon's article here . I view Clinton as a 9 with an unusually pronounced connection to 3.
1. 9s and 6s are the most common presidential types Depending on whether you count Clinton, there were either four or five type 9 presidents in the 20th century: Harding, Eisenhower, Ford, Reagan, and perhaps Clinton. There were also four type 6 presidents in the 20th century: Taft, Truman, Nixon, and George H. W. Bush. The high prevalence of 9s and 6s is surprising, as leaders are often assumed to be overwhelmingly aggressive types such as 8s and 3s. Have 9s and 6s been good presidents? On average, these presidents have been ... well ... average. Harry Truman is the underdog hero among this list. Eisenhower and Reagan have been relatively well-regarded by historians, but neither ranks among our country's "greats". Warren Harding is regarded by historians as one of our worst presidents ever, because he neglected substantial corruption within his administration. Clinton's historical role will be debated for a long time to come, but so far the reviews are mixed - he managed the economy fairly well, and stymied the right-wing onslaught that was unleashed after his presidency. However, Clinton's self-discipline problems probably led to many lost opportunities.

William Howard Taft (1857-1930), twenty-seventh President of the United States (1909-1913), and former Chief Justice of the United States (1921-1930). He was the only man in history to ever hold both offices.
When President Taft in 1910 agreed to be Honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America, he set a precedent accepted by each of his successors. President Taft accepted to "thus sustain a similar relation to the movement as does King George V to a similar movement in England." The First Annual Meeting of the organization was held in the White House at the invitation of President Taft.

John Adams, first of the four presidents who were Unitarians, was on-and-off friends with Thomas Jefferson, who had Unitarian leanings, but was not a member. Learned and thoughtful, John Adams was remarkable as a political philosopher and was one of the indispensable founders of our nation. Prior to serving as President, Adams was a delegate to the Continental Congress, a diplomat, and Vice President under George Washington. John Adams had studied for the ministry, but came to believe that government service would be more exciting.
John Quincy Adams was the only President who was the son of a President. As a boy, his mother had told him that some day the state would rest upon his shoulders. It did not rest lightly. Never publicly popular, often reviled by his political enemies, he nevertheless ended his life in the sunshine of national esteem. The presidency was only one of his careers, sandwiched between being a successful diplomat and Secretary of State, and, after the interlude of being President, an equally successful tenure as a Congressman who opposed slavery. Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were life-long members of First Parish Church, Quincy, Mass. Their tombs stand in a crypt within the church, beside those of their wives, Abigail and Louisa Catherine.
