Main Taiwan Geography People History Symbols Independence vs Reunification
Taiwan is a subtropical island about 160 km from Fujian Province on the mainland. The Tropic of Cancer cuts through the island near Tainan. Often said to be shaped like a tobacco leaf, Taiwan is 394 km north-to-south and 144 km west-to-east. About two thirds of Taiwan is mountainous, and the rest is coastal plains and flatlands.
The territory currently under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China, called the "Taiwan Area" or the "Free Area", consists of Taiwan Island, Matsu, Kinmen, and the Pescadores. It is divided into two provinces: Taiwan and Fukien (Fujian in Pinyin); and two special municipalities: Taipei and Kaohsiung. Taiwan and Fukien are divided into counties and cities. Taiwan Province consists of 16 counties and 5 municipalities: Keelung, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, and Tainan. However, because all of mainland Fukien Province is under Communist control, the ROC only controls the two island counties of Kinmen (Quemoy) and Lienchiang. Major cities of Taiwan are located on the coast, mostly in the west. Taipei, the capital, is in the north, and Kaohsiung, a port city, is in the south. Other cities include Taichung, Tainan, Hsinchu, and Taidong.

Although Taiwan is close to the chinese mainland, it's landscape is different. The high mountains interior with it's lush vegetation is fringed with flat coastal plains, sandy beaches and forests. The highest piek in Taiwan is Yu-Shan at 3997m (13113 ft). The far north (near the capital Teipei) is a volcanic area. Yangmingshan National Park, north of the city is known for it's volcanic pieks, sulfurous craters, lakes and rivers. Comment On This Page

GEOGRAPHY
Taiwan is situated in the middle of a chain of islands in the western Pacific, about midway between Korea, Japan to the north and Hong Kong, the Philippines to the south. It is 160 km (100 miles) off the southeast coast of Mainland China. Taiwan has an area of approximately 36,000 sq km (14,400 sq miles) and is about the same size as Holland.
Taiwan can be divided geographically into five major divisions: the central range, volcanic mountains, foothills, tablelands, and coastal plains and basins. The central range of high mountains runs from the northeast corner to the southern tip of the island. It occupies almost half of the island. Yu-shan (Jade Mountain), 3950 m (12, 959 ft) in height, is the highest point.
CLIMATE
The climate in Taiwan is sub-tropical in the north and tropical in the south. Warm ocean currents give Taiwan a climate that makes vegetation abundant and permits two to three rice harvests a year.
In summer (May to September) the temperature is about 27 degrees C (80.6 degrees F) to 35 degrees C (95 degrees F) with humidity rising to 78%. Winter (December to February) is short and cool (16 degrees C) (60.8 degrees F). Snow falls only on the higher mountains. The typhoon season is from July to October.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan, however it reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government that over five decades has gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within its structure. Throughout this period, the island has prospered to become one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issue continues to be the relationship between Taiwan and China and the question of eventual reunification. Geography [Top of Page] Location: Eastern Asia, islands bordering the East China Sea, Philippine Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait, north of the Philippines, off the southeastern coast of China

In March 2000, the Nationalists were defeated in a popular election by the Democratic People's Party (the first non-violent change in rule in 5000 years of Chinese history), and Taiwan is now lead by Chen Shuibian.
