    HISTORY
Taiwan's aboriginal peoples, who originated in Austronesia and southern China, have lived on Taiwan for 12,000 to 15,000 years. Significant migration to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland began as early as A.D. 500. Dutch traders first claimed the island in 1624 as a base for Dutch commerce with Japan and the China coast. Two years later, the Spanish established a settlement on the northwest coast of Taiwan which they occupied until 1642 when they were driven out by the Dutch. Dutch colonists administered the island and its predominantly aboriginal population until 1661. The first major influx of migrants from the Chinese mainland came during the Dutch period, sparked by the political and economic chaos on the China coast during the Manchu invasion and the end of the Ming Dynasty. In 1664, a Chinese fleet led by the Ming loyalist Cheng Ch'eng-kung (Zheng Chenggong, known in the West as Koxinga) retreated from the mainland and occupied Taiwan. Cheng expelled the Dutch and established Taiwan as a base in his attempt to restore the Ming Dynasty. He died shortly thereafter, and in 1683 his successors submitted to Manchu (Qing Dynasty) control. From 1680 the Qing Dynasty ruled Taiwan as a prefecture and in 1875 divided the island into two prefectures, north and south. In 1887 the island was made into a separate Chinese province. During the 18th and 19th centuries, migration from Fujian and Guangdong provinces steadily increased, and Chinese supplanted aborigines as the dominant population group. In 1895, a weakened Imperial China ceded Taiwan to Japan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki following the first Sino-Japanese war.

  • Present and Future Charts, tables, and boxes: The beauty of Taiwan was recognized by the Portuguese in the mid-16th century, when they called it Ilha Formosa , or "beautiful island." In less than four hundred years, the island has developed into one of the most modernized countries in the world, with a current population of 22.35 million. The self-sufficient agrarian economy of Taiwan was transformed in the second half of the 20th century into a vigorous and advanced economy, with an income of more than US$11,000 per capita. Despite being ruled under colonial regimes in the 17th and 20th centuries and martial law for forty years after World War II, Taiwan peacefully evolved into a democratic country, and has been acclaimed as a "silent revolution." All these miracles took place in a short period, which was unique in Chinese history. This chapter briefly summarizes the history of Taiwan. An additional chapter on the history of the ROC before 1949 is included in the

Taiwan's History/Background It is believed that in the 12th century groups of Japanese occupied parts of Taiwan, and they eventually claimed possession of the eastern portion of Taiwan from the 15th century on. The Portuguese went to Taiwan in 1590, thus becoming the first set of Europeans to arrive. They were so impressed with the island, they called it Formosa , which means beautiful. In 1692, the Dutch frustrated Spanish attempts at developing settlements by taking possession of the P'enghu Islands. Within three years, the Dutch were on Taiwan's southeastern coast.

    Taiwan's 400 years of history
Important milestones from the early 1600s to the present
Originally, Taiwan was settled by people of Malay-Polynesian descent, who initially inhabited the low-lying coastal plains. They called their island Pakan . Here is a detail of an old Dutch navigational map with this name on it. During the subsequent settlement by the Dutch and the waves of settlers from China, the aborigines retreated to the hills and mountains, and became the "mountain people."
    The 17th Century
The island's modern history goes back to around 1590, when the first Western ship passed by the island, and Jan Huygen van Linschoten, a Dutch navigator on a Portugese ship, exclaimed "Ilha Formosa" (meaning "Beautiful island"), which became its name for the next four centuries. Taiwan in the Dutch period Interestingly enough, the most comprehensive historical records on Taiwan go back some 350 years, to the period of the Dutch occupation, 1624-1662. When the Dutch East Indies Company arrived, they found only the aborigine population on the island: there were no signs of any administrative structure of the Chinese Imperial Government. Thus, at that time

Taiwan Taiwan is a modern industrialised megalopolis clinging to the fringes of an ancient culture; a string of teeming cities at the feet of a glorious mountain range. It's traditional noodles from a 7-Eleven, aboriginal tribes in mini-skirts and a day of temple rituals followed by waterslide rides. The human tide of Taipei will sweep you off your feet, but if you step outside the city limits you'll discover why Taiwan is known as Ilha Formosa, 'the beautiful island'. Mountain peaks puncture a sea of clouds, slick black volcanic rock wraps the coastlines and waterfalls shroud themselves in mist: Taiwan is a computer-generated Chinese watercolour. But it is precisely Taiwan's history with China that has caused the most friction and heartache for the Taiwanese. The continuing tug-of-war between the People's Republic of China on the mainland and the Democratic Progressive Party on Taiwan is often prone to take on the pasty complexion of a civil war albeit one that has not, as yet, developed into an all-out brawl. Mainland China insists on the truth of 'one China' while Taiwan has managed the impossible tightrope act of agreeing, in principle, to one China but acting, in practice, like an independant republic. HISTORY AND PEOPLE
  • What are the important events in Taiwan's history? Taiwan's earliest inhabitants left no records, but anthropological evidence suggests that Taiwan's indigenous peoples were Proto-Austronesians. Settlers from China came to Taiwan as early as the 12th century A.D., but large-scale immigration did not begin until the 17th century when Europeans also began to arrive. Both the Dutch and the Spanish set up short-lived colonial outposts on Taiwan in the 17th century. The Dutch drove the Spaniards out in 1642, and were themselves evicted from the island by the Ming dynasty loyalist Koxinga in 1663. Over the next 20 years, Koxinga's troops built many schools and set up an elaborate irrigation system on the island. Industry consisted of refining salt and sugar, and rice cultivation spread across Taiwan's western plains. In 1683, the Ching dynasty forces conquered Taiwan and established administrative districts in sites that today have become some of Taiwan's biggest cities: Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Chiayi. Despite the Ching dynasty's efforts to limit immigration to Taiwan, the island's population continued to grow. Agriculture flourished, and soon Taiwan was producing more rice than it needed. The excess was shipped to China, along with sugar, tea, camphor, and deer hides.

Taiwan Time and Date Taiwan History Back to Top Archaeological evidence consisting of primitive utensils indicates Taiwan was inhabited by humans as far back as 10,000 years ago. Bands of Japanese are said to have conquered portions of the island in the 12th century, and from the 15th century onward Japan regarded the eastern half of Taiwan as its possession. In 1590 the Portuguese became the first known Europeans to visit the island, which they called Formosa (Portuguese for “beautiful”). Subsequently, the Spanish attempted to found permanent settlements, but they were thwarted by the Dutch, who succeeded in taking possession of the P’enghu Islands in 1622. Three years later the Dutch established forts on the southeastern coast of Taiwan. In 1644 the Manchus of northeastern China defeated the Ming dynasty and established the Qing dynasty. Meanwhile, a group of Ming followers led by Cheng Ch’eng-kung, known in the West as Koxinga, drove the Dutch from Taiwan and occupied the island’s southwestern portion. Cheng established a formal Chinese government, ruling Taiwan as a Ming enclave. It was not until 1683 that the island finally fell to Qing rule. Thereafter, immigration to Taiwan from mainland China increased greatly. As a result of Britain’s victory against China in the Opium Wars and the ratification of the Treaty of Tientsin in 1860, two ports on Taiwan’s western coast opened to foreign ships. Roman Catholic and Protestant missions were established on the island soon after.

Brief History Geography and Climate Natural Resources Population ... Brief History In 1895, China was forced by military defeat to cede Taiwan to Japan. In 1945, however, it reverted to Chinese control after the Japan was defeated. When the Communists came to power on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government that gradually democratised and incorporated native Taiwanese within its structure. In March 2000, the Nationalists were defeated in a popular election by the Democratic People's Party (the first non-violent change in rule in 5000 years of Chinese history), and Taiwan is now lead by Chen Shuibian. Since 1945, the island has prospered as one of East Asia's economic miracles, but the relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China and the question of eventual reunification is still the most pressing issue in Taiwan today. History Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa, is a land of divine beauty and warm hospitality. Long ago, humanity began to flock the island after rumors of untold riches of the island. Pirates, political exiles, traders, adventurers, farmers, and fishermen abandoned their homes in the coastal areas of China to begin a new life in Taiwan, with hopes of striking it rich and leading a better life. Taiwan is rich in Chinese history and culture, the latter being the cement that has kept the Chinese civilization together to this day.

    History: tao
A decade later, Chinese defeat in the first Sino-Japanese War brought the first occupations of Chinese territory by the Japanese. Among the regions they took control of was Taiwan. Although it was fiercely resented and actively resisted by the population, Taiwan remained under Japanese rule from 1895 until its defeat at the end of World War II.
Business Profile ). Politically, Taiwan relied for a long time upon the support of the USA until the early 1970s, when the rapprochement between Washington and Beijing took place. The Chinese still consider Taiwan to be part of the national territory and continue to harbour the long-term objective of reunifying Taiwan with the mainland. International recognition of Taiwan (by the United Nations, for example) is therefore unacceptable. Many in Taiwan also believe that the two countries should be reunited but dispute the terms under which this should take place; the idea of a Hong Kong-type solution is given short shrift.
From the beginning of the 1990s, responding to both internal and external pressure, the KMT relaxed its stranglehold on domestic politics. This also offered the prospect of a more flexible attitude from Taipei towards China. A new constitution was adopted in 1991. In December 1992, the National Assembly election saw the KMT vote cut to just over 50 per cent while the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) took 31 per cent of the vote.

Taiwan's History Aborigines were the first people to live in Taiwan. Some Chinese people started coming to Taiwan in the 500's. Still the big settlement didn't start until the 1600's. Dutch traders filled the ports of Taiwan from 1624 to 1661. A Chinese Ming dynasty official named Koxinga ran them out. Koxinga wanted to use Taiwan as a attack base against Manchus. Taiwan is the seat of the Nationalist Chinese government and since 1949 has claimed to have jurisdiction over the People's Republic of China on the mainland. Of course, the People's Republic claims that Taiwan should be under their rule, but both agree that Taiwan is part of China. Economy Government Plants and Animals Location ... Home
