STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY Department of Human Geography Personal Web page of Listening to the land: Geography and History of a Sustainable and Intensive Farming System in Tanzania. This research project is about an area located in the northern highlands of Tanzania, where an example of a labour intensive farming system with roots in pre-colonial times is studied. House in the Iraqw heartland, Tanzania The study area The historical geography of the Iraqw people in northern central Tanzania revolves around their heartland and cultural core area on the Mbulu Plateau, just above the Rift Wall, in Mbulu District. This relatively small area, about 180 km2, is, apart from its exclusive cultural standing also geographically and agriculturally distinctively different from its surroundings. Its geographical appearance is like a container with rolling hills between rivers and streams, shielded by mountains, forests and the Rift escarpment. Inside, labour intensive handhoe cultivation (characterised by erosion prevention, water control, manuring, composting and mulching), cattle rearing and tree-planting are the main activities shaping the landscape. Outside, individual farm holdings are larger and farming more capital intensive, including ploughing by oxen or tractor and more widespread utilisation of improved seeds, chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Listening to the Land Research environment My PhD-project is carried out as a case study of a research project co-ordinated at the Environments and Developments Studies Unit (EDSU), School of Geography, Stockholm University, titled: Islands of agricultural intensification in East Africa - the social, ecological and historical contexts. This project aims to investigate the driving forces and dynamics of intensive agriculture in East Africa, in a long time perspective, using experience from anthropology and geography, with active involvement of material culture studies, archaeology, history, plant ecology and the geo-sciences.
