Y ou've been asked to attend a regularly scheduled "report card" conference with your child's teacher. Or you've gotten a special note from your child's teacher asking to see you. In either case, you might be a little nervous. Well, relax. Teachers don't want to put parents on the spot. They just like to meet with parents from time to time to discuss how to help students do their best in school. All children learn in different ways. They have their own individual personalities, and their own listening and work habits. To help their students learn new knowledge and skills, teachers must know as much as they can about each child's likes and dislikes. No one knows more about these things than you, the parents. And no one has more influence over your children than you. That's why teachers need your help to do a first-class job. Working together, you and the teacher can help your child have a successful school year.

Parent conference TIPS for teachers

Life can be tough if you're a 7th grader at a parent-teacher conference (photo)

The Highs and Lows of Parent-Teacher Conferences
By Holly Holland Eric Walthall, a seventh-grader with brown hair and wire glasses, sits at a classroom conference table with his mother Tammy and his language arts teacher Dena Kent. Eyes cast downward and palms sweating, he's giving a report of his recent progress at Iroquois Middle School.
"I know I talk too much in school," he says to his mother. "I wanted you to hear this from me first. Other than that, I got pretty good grades."
Reading from his self-evaluation, Eric describes his goals: to do more independent reading, to become a veterinarian, to concentrate in class.
Kent congratulates him for his candor and his willingness to see his positive and negative traits. Then she gently asks him a series of questions designed to draw him out.
"You say you deserve an A in your (writing) portfolio, but you got a B," she says. After hesitating a moment, Eric admits that he has missed some assignment deadlines.
"Why is that, Eric?" Kent asks.

Invite both parents.
Encourage both parents to attend conferences when possible. Misunderstandings are less common if both parents hear what you have to say, and you'll be able to gauge the kind of support both parents give the child. (Of course, remember that both mother and father may not be available. Today, when some 60 percent of adult women work outside the home, it may not always be the mother who's available to meet. And many children come from single-parent homes; you could unwittingly hurt a child's feelings by always asking to meet the "mother.")
Make contact early. You'll get your relationship with parents off to a good start if you contact them early in the year, perhaps with a memo or newsletter sent home to all pupils. Give parents an outline of what their children will be studying, and let them know you'll be happy to meet with them during the year. (Be sure to say how and when they may contact you for conferences.)
Allow enough time.

Parent Teacher Conferences
There is a concern about Talika's speech delay. Vince's temper has become an issue. Developmental progress reports are completed. These are some reasons a caregiver may have parent-teacher conferences. These meetings are also prime opportunities to learn more about the child and forge a partnership with parents. It is advisable to establish an open line of communication and friendly rapport with parents before sitting down to a structured conference. Daily informal conversations may also seve as an effective way to share information, address concerns, and celebrate progress. While planning the meeting it is crucial to be sensitive to the fact parents may come to the table with many different values and concerns. A parent's own cultural background and childhood are strong influences on their expectations for their child's development and behavior. The caregiver needs to insure they communicate respect for this as they promote an open dialoge about the care of the child.

About The School Teacher- Parent(s) Conferences
At no time should you be in doubt of your child's progress. You are notified of his/her progress through deficiency notices and report cards. If you still have questions or feel that there has been a misunderstanding, please call the school for an appointment with the teacher or principal. Students who wish to talk with a teacher about any problem should request a conference with the teacher before or after school, or at a time convenient to both during the day. Teachers may also request conferences with a student in order to give or arrange individual help, or to clarify misunderstandings.
Appointments with School Personnel
Parents who wish to meet with the Principal, a teacher, or any member of the School Staff must contact the person to arrange a mutually convenient meeting time. For the sake of good order in the school, parents may not approach staff members during the school day without arranging an appointment beforehand. Staff members who wish to communicate with the parents of a student may do so by phone, letter or at a mutually convenient appointment. Teachers will not schedule an appointment at times that could conflict with teaching or supervisory duties. When appointments are made, both the parent and the staff member should be aware of the purpose of the conference so that all concerned may be appropriately prepared.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
According to all research in the field of education, parents play a major role in the education of high school students. Because of this fact, I encourage all parents to visit with me and discuss any aspect of their child's education. Unfortunately time restraints become a major problem with setting up conferences with many parents. Because of this I have constructed some easy steps to setting up a conference with me.
Steps to take
Step 1 Email me at harpo1@ebicom.net and place in the subject area "Conference". In the body of the email just tell me who you are, your child's name, and the best time to set up a conference. Step 2 I will reply to your email and we will discuss and confirm a time to meet at the high school. The ideal time for a conference is during my conference period but on some days I am able to schedule before and after school.
Additional Information
  • Because of confidentiality issues, I cannot discuss grades or discipline over the internet.

Letting Middle Graders Lead Parent Conferences A seventh-grade teacher explains how her team involves students in teacher-parent conferences. "Students show parents some of their work and explain their grades at a student-led conference.... The format is important, but I believe the success of a student-led conference is most determined by how well students are prepared." Strategies for Successful Parent Conferences
A period of high stress for all educators is Parent-Teacher conferences. There is nothing quite like teaching all day and then facing the parents of kids you've just been in mortal combat with for the past seven hours. Can we all say "splitting headache?" Most teachers start the meetings feeling tired and try their best to manage for the evening sessions. Some districts are starting to also provide a "day" session for parents because there are an increasing number of 2nd shift workers who are unable to make evening meetings. This has the advantage of letting the kids out of school for the day so teachers can rest up a little before the conferences. The first advice is a no brainer...get some rest. As simple as this sounds it cannot be overemphasized. How many of us are better at handling difficult situations when we are rested? My guess would be 100%. When you know you've got a difficult couple of days ahead, do yourself a favor and get some extra sleep. Not only will it make the parent-teacher conferences a lot more enjoyable in general but it will minimize the possibility of losing your cool with parents. When teachers (and people in general) are tired they are much more irritable and must less able to tolerate frustrating circumstances.
