Teaching General Chemistry
A Materials Science Companion ARTHUR B. ELLIS, MARGRET J. GESELBRACHT, BRIAN J. JOHNSON, GEORGE C. LISENSKY, and WILLIAM R. ROBINSON
This resource volume, written especially for teachers of introductory chemistry courses, is in a ready-to-use format that will enable instructors to integrate materials chemistry into their curriculum. The book collects a critical mass of text, demonstrations, and laboratory experiments. The first ten chapters present a general introduction to solids; numerous easy-to-do teacher demonstrations are integrated into the material. The second part of the volume consists of fifteen laboratory experiments for students. Examples from cutting-edge research, as well as everyday life, spark student interest while illustrating the basic ideas that are important to an understanding of chemistry. 575 pp.; 0-8412-2725-X Publication dates and prices are subject to change without notice. Prices are stated in US Dollars and valid only for sales transacted through the US website.

ABSTRACT
While the examples of pseudoscience are a very small portion of these traditional courses in general and analytical chemistry, they will undoubtedly be some of the most memorable particulars that the students recall in future years. And if the examination of scientific foibles by these students helps to avoid future cases of pathological science on their part, we have gained much with little investment. INTRODUCTION This paper briefly describes a four-level approach to using pseudoscience and pathological science as tools to further educational goals in second-semester general chemistry and analytical chemistry courses. It provides detailed information about five specific areas of pseudoscience, pathological science, or anomaly investigations that are applicable to chemical education, and describes two student special projects and student experiences at a conference on controversial research. A compilation of further instances of pseudoscience, pathological science and anomaly investigations, and discussions of specific uses, can be found on the Reference Page
The four-level approach involved the inclusion of pseudoscientific topics in (a) lecture, discussion, and examinations; (b) demonstrations; (c) laboratory experiments; and (d) student attendance at a conference where controversial research was presented by mainstream and fringe scientists. Levels (a) and (b) were used in both general chemistry and analytical chemistry classes, while levels (c) and (d) were used only in analytical chemistry, and only for the most motivated and highest achieving students.

A 15-week term was divided into three 5-week segments and assigned to three science departments. The Geology Department determined that students were to learn the scientific method and the science of geology through field studies, problem-solving, conducting experiments, and participating in faculty research. This report focuses on radon research and engaging students in radon studies to fulfill the science requirement. The Biological Sciences Department similarly engaged students in fermentation/enology studies.

You will have an appointment with the placement area coordinator to discuss your individual needs and requests. It is the policy of the College of Education to place you in a school other than the ones you have attended to provide you with the opportunity to have a more diverse student teaching experience. Please do not plan to student teach in a school where a close relative is a teacher or administrator. Requests for out-of-area and out-of-state placements must be made one year in advance, submitted in writing and approved by Henry McCarthy, Assistant Dean (phone 262-2109). Do not attempt to make your own placement! Do not contact a school, principal, or teacher and request student teaching with them without prior approval of the Director of Field Experiences.

To enable students to develop a strong understanding of the process involved in drug action. This includes the mechanisms of drug action as well as the process involved in drug disposition.
General Objectives
At the end of this section, the student should be able to:
  • To review the mechanism of drug action To review the processes involved in drug biodisposition To describe how these processes impact upon the safe and rational use of drugs

  • Road Map
This section concentrates on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles of drug action. It consists of:
    15 didactic lectures,
4 tutorial sessions which discuss how these principles apply in clinical drug use, and
4 practical classes where students have the opportunity to experience and observe the real-time application of these principles.

(An Alternative Method) Touching upon Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry.
The great pedagogical principle is to lead the student from the familiar to the unfamiliar. In grammar school science the students have learned about such fundamental concepts as atoms, and about living beings including DNA and genes. Thus, let's see how we can start with that foundation and do a classic reductionist approach, no unlike figuring out the principles of a clock by taking it about and seeing how each of the parts works. "Here is a tree. Is it one or more than one atom? What are the parts of a tree trunk biochemically? Ah, cellulose. What must cellulose look like - round and granular or long and fibrous? What happens when you chew on a popsickle stick for a long time? Ah, long, and fibrous! On the blackboard, let's draw one of them, represented by a line. Now this line might also represent a muscle fiber, or a DNA molecule. Is it one or more than one atom?" Thus the concepts of polyatomic structures are imprinted.
Next we can turn to two other grammar school science concepts - magnetism and electricity. Although there is a great deal of fuzziness in understanding, the students already know about the two magnetic poles, N and S, and that we have electricity in "positive" and "negative" forms, such as we seemingly have in our household sockets. Combining these two concepts we can put some plusses and minuses onto the line on the blackboard, and introduce another word that they may have heard - "ion" - from TV ads about a type of air purifiers. But now you can refine their concept by mentioning that the charged line on the blackboard now represents a "polyatomic" "ion" - actually, a polyionic molecule.

The first RCGP international course for teachers of general practice (Nov 1996)
by Dr John Howard FRCGP and Prof Rosslynne Freeman (Course Organisers)
The RCGP has been supporting the development of effective learning and teaching of our discipline, both formally through the establishment of international fellowships, and through many informal contacts. The need to demonstrate the increasing professionalism of the educational structure and process of the learning and teaching of general practice is shared by colleagues in other countries together with need for accountability and resulting outcomes in health care. This changing climate brought a new initiative from the Royal College - the first international course for teachers of general practice. To achieve a more meaningful outcome, to a defined standard of postgraduate education, the course is being academically validated, which will enable participants to gain recognition through the award of a postgraduate certificate, then working towards a diploma and even a masters degree in learning and teaching. This was achieved by the validation of the course participants' work by De Montfort University, Leicester.
