Excerpts from: Teen Addiction to Nicotine Hard to Measure By Andrew Holtz, Reuters [08/10/00 CHICAGO (Reuters Health) - In order to battle teen smoking, it is important to know when teenage smokers cross over from
experimentation to tobacco dependence or addiction; but that point is hard to determine, according to presentations made here
Wednesday at the 11th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. Dr. Raymond Niaura of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, pointed out that just because a teenager smokes does
not mean he or she is dependent on tobacco or nicotine. ``One potential problem with tobacco use as a marker for dependence is that patterns of use by adolescents are remarkably
variable and unstable, difficult to measure with fine degrees of precision and may not be of great prognostic value in terms of
predicting future entrenched tobacco involvement,'' he explained.

He hoped the discoloration was dirt. He tried scrubbing it off in the shower. But the stains from heroin use don't wash away that easily. Four years ago, Wayne Carelli, 17, began abusing heroin. Now he's in treatment and staying at the O.U.R. House in East Liberty, where his mother, Marilyn, and other family members attend regular therapy sessions. I used more and more as time went on. After six months, I was every day, buying and buying. I kept smoking and smoking.” “You’re paranoid in the beginning. You don’t want to be caught. As you use drugs, you get careless. You’re real bold after awhile.” “People think they can level their drug use. Nope. It’s not going to happen. I’ve heard it so many times. My friend will say, ‘Yeah, sure. I can handle it.’ That’s real stupid, you know?” “You go to a party and snort cocaine. No big deal. It’s once and done. Next time you go to a party, you do it again. The next party, again. Each time you need a little bit more of the drug to get the same high as the first time. So, it’s a gradual, gradual thing. You are not saying, ‘I want to become addicted.’ You think, ‘I can control it at any time.’ You are not realizing that the drug is taking hold of you. The drug is telling you that you can handle the high. All of a sudden, it’s mid-week. Well, maybe this one time isn’t going to hurt. You snort again. Before you know it, you’re addicted. The drug becomes stronger than you.”

Among some of the reports findings:
  • A rise in mobile phone use during the late 1990s coincided with a decline in smoking among 15-year-olds. The prevalence of smoking fell to 23% in 1999 from 30% in 1996, the same year mobile phone use skyrocketed among 15- to 17-year-olds
"We hypothesise that the fall in youth smoking and the rise in ownership of mobile phones among adolescents are related," the authors write. They suggest that many teens cannot afford to sustain both habits and prefer the cutting-edge technology over the smoking.

True Stories of Teen Addiction
Two women who hit rock-bottom are climbing back up. As told to Kathleen Jacobs What's your image of a drug user? Probably not the easygoing girl next door or a busy mom of two. You might be surprised to learn who is secretly fighting the lure of drugs. Consider the facts: An estimated 14 million Americans currently use illicit drugs, according to the most recent National Household Survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The same research found that 9.5% of teen girls use drugs and more than 30% of all women (ages 12 and up) say that they have tried drugs at some point. Just like Zoey in our new Lifetime movie, many young women start dabbling with addictive substances as a way to deal with the pressures of their teen years. "We cannot predict who uses drugs," says Terry Horton, M.D., medical director at Phoenix House, a national substance abuse treatment program. For some, their abuse will persist with serious consequences. But there is hope. A five-year study by SAMHSA determined that treatment reduces illicit drug use by 43%. Longer periods of treatment can improve the odds. Still, the most important factors in successful recovery, says Dr. Horton, are family support and involvement. Meet two women who overcame their addictions and are rebuilding their lives.
Vicki H., 39, lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with her two children. Drug-free for nine years, she has a master's degree in social work and is employed at Chrysalis House, a long-term residential substance abuse and alcohol rehabilitation center. This is her story:

Now I've been here a year, and I'm in the final phase of treatment. It's called reentry, and I'm going to get a job and pay off my debts. I still think about drugs, but I have to be stronger. I learned that you can do things sober and still have fun, such as going dancing or eating out. I play volleyball. I go to NA [Narcotics Anonymous]. I keep occupied to stay strong. I never thought I'd be able to get this far. I figured I'd be on drugs the rest of my life. I feel good now; I'm proud of myself. I was even asked to speak at a fund-raiser. Afterward, a woman told me that my story was inspiring. I felt so good that day. I felt as if I had finally accomplished something.

Teen Addiction ... real life struggles Natalie Eagle
I'm 16, a junior in high school, and an ex-smoker. I don't even remember why I started smoking. I probably picked it up from my older sister. I started when I was 13 years old. Somewhere in between those years I quit for 3 months with a little help from the patch. Obviously it didn't work because I kept smoking. Only instead of going back to cigarettes, I went to cloves and bidi's, which I later learned are more addictive. I had many reasons to quit smoking. I got bad headaches, it was hard to breath, and I was diagnosed with macular degeneration, which is an eye disease. I've read many pamphlets that said the risk of early blindness is increased in smokers who have macular degeneration. That had to be just about the best reason I needed to stop. I quit on October 27, 1998, and I still haven't given in, to smoking again even though itís a big temptation. I'm pretty sure this time it's for good.
Teresa Eagle
I'm a 17 year old girl who used to socially smoke, or so I thought. A couple of months before my freshman year I decided to try smoking. It didn't taste that bad. I should have stopped there but I didn't. I remember telling myself that I would not let myself get addicted. I thought, I just wouldn't smoke enough to get addicted. That's the trick! Contrary to what I thought, a few cigarettes were enough to get addicted.
Rita Romero
I started smoking when I was 13 years old. I remember the experience well; it was a hot boring summer day. I sat behind the shed in my backyard while my brother watched and laughed as I inhaled deeply and coughed, feeling like my lungs might burst. As much as that feeling bothered me, it also felt good. I felt older, and more confident as I began to get the hang of it. I felt a rush knowing that my mom and dad could show up anytime and see what I was doing. I was taking a risk.

We love HOUSE OF HOPE, BAJA! RECOVERY-ONE FAMILIES STORY About a year ago, as thousands of parents do, we became concerned that our son was experimenting with some form of drugs. Although not his natural mother, I consider him my son. The idea of drugs didn't seem possible since our son attended a private Christian school for several years. He was usually polite, kind and obedient. His grades began to drop, he had always held a high grade point average, so we began to worry. He was picked up for school each day by a friend so we knew his attendance was not a problem.
There were some concerns regarding dress code ethics and music desires as well as some eerie looking handmade jewelry worn about the neck. Since all the kids were doing it, we didn't get alarmed until he was expelled from the Christian school program for smoking on the school grounds during school hours.

Strong Maternal Bond Effective in Preventing Teen Addiction

The international study involved 4,000 teenagers in England, Ireland, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. The participants were questioned about their use of marijuana, amphetamines, ecstasy, LSD, tranquilizers, and alcohol. In addition, the teens were asked to complete questionnaires that asked about their relationships with their parents and grandparents, the extent of their supervision after school, and whether they were allowed to meet friends at home.
The researchers determined that the rate of alcohol and other drug use among teens living with both parents and having a good relationship with their mother was 16.6 percent. If either factor was missing, the rate increased to 32 percent.
The study further showed that more than 42 percent of teens living with one parent and lacking a strong relationship with their mother used alcohol or other drugs.

Teen Addiction Called National Public-Health Problem

The Physician Leadership on National Drug Policy (PLNDP) group defines the situation as a national public-health problem, the New York Times reported Jan. 7.
According to the study conducted at the University of Michigan, 53 percent of all American adolescents have tried an illegal drug by the time they have finished high school. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that the rate of binge drinking among those ages 18 to 20 has increased by 56 percent from 1993 to 2001.
PLNDP plans to present a report to Congress and every state governor that focuses on the misuse of illegal substances among adolescents. The report calls for more treatment programs tailored to the needs of teenagers.
"You can't just apply the adult model to teenagers. We need a new investment for what we know works for children," said Dr. David Lewis, a physician at Brown University and the lead author of the physician group's report.
