NAAG Recognizes First-Ever National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
May 3, 2002 The first-ever National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy takes place May 8, 2002. The campaign is an online effort to get teens nationwide to stop, think, and decide what they will do to avoid teen pregnancy. On the National Day, teens will go online to www.teenpregnancy.org and take a short, engaging quiz that asks young people what the best thing to do is in a number of tough, but realistic, situations including peer pressure, parties that get out of control, gossip, and more. The National Day is sponsored by the nonprofit, nonpartisan, National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and the National Day’s founding partners, Teen People magazine and Teen People Online. In addition, NAAG and more than 80 prominent national organizations, media outlets, intergovernmental organizations, businesses, membership associations, and youth groups have signed on as National Day partners and are helping spread the word about the National Day and the quiz. The purpose of the National Day is to engage teens, particularly those who don’t think teen pregnancy is their problem. Despite significant progress during the past decade, the United States still has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and birth among comparable nations. Four out of ten girls still become pregnant at least once before age 20. The vast majority (78 percent) of pregnancies among teens are not fully planned or intended and, at present, 79 percent of births to teen mothers are out-of-wedlock.

Welcome to the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy website. The mission of the Campaign is to improve the well-being of South Carolina’s children and families and the future health and economic prosperity of our state and its citizens through the prevention of adolescent pregnancies. The Campaign exists to facilitate and advocate the prevention of adolescent pregnancy and to provide technical assistance and support to individuals, groups, and communities in organizing and implementing grassroots collaborative teen pregnancy prevention councils and programs. Our goal is to reduce the teen pregnancy rate 30% by 2005 through educating the citizens of our state as well as our policymakers about the needs of our most vulnerable population and encouraging investments in proven effective prevention strategies for our children before they become sexually active, contract HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases, get pregnant, drop out of school, become dependent of public assistance, become entrenched in poverty and suffer lifelong health, psychological, spiritual, emotional and financial consequences.

Senator challenges teens to 'focus on dreams, aspirations and goals'
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Flanked by NFL Pro-Bowl cornerback Jason Sehorn and members of Congress, Maryland Senator Nathaniel Exum helped to kick off the inaugural National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Speaking on behalf of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Senator Exum pointed out the dangers of becoming a teen parent. "These young people find their horizons narrowed, their parents disappointed and their ability to build a secure future compromised by becoming parents too soon," Senator Exum said. "Instead, teens should focus on their dreams, their aspirations and their goals." The National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, is a collaborative effort of a diverse group of more than 80 prominent national organizations and individuals, including NCSL. Through high-profile events around the country, the National Day encourages teens to go online ( www.teenpregnancy.org

Regional Prevention Center
of the Flint Hills
"Local people solve local problems." Increasingly, adults across the state are becoming concerned about the healthy development of young people and are searching for answers to the problems of substance abuse, delinquency, violence, teen pregnancy, and school dropout. The Regional Prevention Center of the Flint Hills (RPCFH) is working to build a strong foundation of community support for the reduction of these adolescent problem behaviors. By assisting communities in building the capacity to address youth health and behavior problems, we are empowering them at a local level to create safe and healthy environments for youth to live, learn, and grow. Based in Emporia, Kansas, the RPCFH provides resources, training, consultation, and technical assistance to the eleven counties comprising the Flint Hills region. Although the services we provide are diverse, our intent is singular: to reduce the factors that place youth at risk for alcohol and drug abuse, while increasing factors that protect, or buffer, youth from risk. Such a risk-focused approach allows communities to be proactive in the fight against youth involvement in alcohol, drugs, violence, delinquency, and other high-risk activities. Be part of the solution. Contact the RPCFH for information concerning risk-focused prevention and things you can do to protect Kansas' most valuable resource - our children.

PREVENTING TEENAGE PREGNANCY
Overview: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is committed to continuing efforts to prevent out-of-wedlock teen pregnancies and to encourage adolescents to remain abstinent. President Bush and Secretary Thompson are committed to promoting abstinence education programs and dissemination of information on promising approaches. HHS programs are built on the belief that the most effective programs are community-driven and support the involvement of parents and other adults in young people's lives. By focusing on abstinence and personal responsibility, HHS hopes to help young people develop their abilities to make the choices that will lead to a successful future. President Bush's budget for fiscal year 2003 provides an additional $33 million in funding for abstinence education, fulfilling the President's promise to increase abstinence funding to $135 million. HHS directly funds teen pregnancy prevention programs in nearly 2,234 communities about 47 percent of all communities across the country. HHS provides significant funding for abstinence education and other programs to prevent teen pregnancy and disease. In addition, HHS funds a wide range of health and human services programs through state block grants, including those that provide health and social services to teenagers that further pregnancy prevention goals. HHS is committed to building public-private partnerships, improving research, evaluation and data collection, and disseminating information on innovative and effective practices.

Let’s Have More Teen Pregnancy
It’s not a problem. By Frederica Mathewes-Green rue Love Waits. Wait Training. Worth Waiting For. The slogans of teen abstinence programs reveal a basic fact of human nature: teens, sex, and waiting aren't a natural combination. Over the last 50 years the wait has gotten longer. In 1950, the average first-time bride was just over 20; in 1998 she was five years older, and her husband was pushing 27. If that June groom had launched into puberty at 12, he'd been waiting more than half his life.
If he had been waiting, that is. Sex is the sugar coating on the drive to reproduce, and that drive is nearly overwhelming. It's supposed to be; it's the survival engine of the human race. Fighting it means fighting a basic bodily instinct, akin to fighting thirst. Younger moms and dads are likely be more nimble at child-rearing as well, less apt to be exhausted by toddlers' perpetual motion, less creaky-in-the-joints when it's time to swing from the monkey bars. I suspect that younger parents will also be more patient with boys-will-be-boys rambunction, and less likely than weary 40-somethings to beg pediatricians for drugs to control supposed pathology. Humans are designed to reproduce in their teens, and they're potentially very good at it. That's why they want to so much.

Teen parents talking to other teens about the challenges and pitfalls of teen pregnancy. Keep Your Freedom! Keep Your Dreams! is the innovative new program developed by the Child Support Services Department and the Los Angeles County Office of Education. " The name of the program is no accident," said David Flores, Alternative Education Director at Pomona High School as he spoke to the first class of the teen parents who are the spokespeople for the program. "Young people lose their dreams when they get pregnant," Flores said. Pomona High School was chosen as the site for the pilot training program for Keep Your Freedom! Keep Your Dreams! because Pomona, a city of 140,000 people, 3 of every 10 children are born to teen mothers. "If I could jump into a time machine and go back," said Rayjaquel 17, I don’t think I would have done it. She is one of a group 9 young teen moms and a teen father, who recently went through a week of special training to help them polish their public speaking skills to prepare them to take their message to other teens.

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH INFO Learn about midwifery, homebirth, breastfeeding, complications, natural health, and herbs. What Exactly is
In the eyes and hearts of most people, a newborn baby is a precious and magical gift. The creation of this tiny wonder is also an incredible miracle which comes complete with excitement, awe, and much curiosity. Understanding the changes in a woman's body as her child grows inside her, as well as understanding the psychological, physical, and spiritual development of her newly forming little one, bring the relaxation and strength necessary to alleviate anxiety, fear, confusion, and pain felt often during the prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum times. Spiritual Birth Counseling is knowledge, support, therapy, and emotional care for the woman wanting to be a mother, the mother-to-be, and the new mother. Pregnancy is a time of joy and magic. The development and birth of a baby creates a passageway into an entire new sense of being and a new stage of life for a woman. Becoming a mother envelopes a sense of creation, maturity, growth, love, and wonder, which should all be understood and celebrated. Spiritual Birth Counseling touches tenderly upon each of these aspects of pregnancy.
Magic
Prebirth Bonding Bonding in itself is another aspect of pregnancy covered in Spiritual Birth Counseling. Pre-birth bonding helps the mother recognize and experience fully the connection between herself and her baby, while creating a comforting, loving, and positive atmosphere and aura for the child. The womb is a nurturing environment itself, but the emotions of the mother, both negative and positive, reflect directly on the baby's state of mind and being. Because of the intensity of this direct relationship, it is important to act in a positive manner. This means, not only eating well, and treating your physical body well, but also being emotionally secure and happy, while providing your child loving affirmations, warm thoughts, and daily communication. This insures trust and love into the unborn child and starts the special relationship that will last throughout the lives of both mother and child.
