Over the years, as our nation's population has become increasingly urbanized, land grant universities have assumed responsibility for dealing with issues critical to both rural and urban lifestyles: e.g. home economics, health and family education. And as it became evident that agriculture and other human activities can have profound influences on our surroundings, many land grant universities became forerunners in areas such as water quality, sustainability, natural resource conservation and environmental stewardship in general. The purpose of accreditation is to strengthen family and consumer sciences education at the college and university level. The AAFCS Council for Accreditation is a specialized accrediting agency. Its mission is to provide a voluntary external evaluation of units in higher education that represent the family and consumer sciences profession and to recognize those units that meet or exceed stated standards. Accreditation is designed to assure the quality of the education offered in programs of professional study. The Showcase will host exhibits and demonstrations highlighting products, services, and equipment. A number of agencies will be present with information and resources for producers and consumers. Demonstrations (tillage, corn silage, hay harvesting, lawn and garden, saw mills, ATV's, livestock handling, equestrian, CPS/GIS, and more) related to a variety of areas will take place throughout the Showcase. Food and Entertainment

The Showcase includes activities of interest for the whole family including a variety of highlighted features and entertainment for adults and youth. Training Institute held at the new Memphis/Shelby County Public Library

In June of 2002, with funding provided by Assissi Foundation through the Memphis/Shelby County Library Foundation, "Using Story as a Way to Teach," an intensive 4-day, 24-classroom-hour training institute was held at the new Memphis/Shelby County Public Library. Twenty participants representing 10 agencies learned how to help all parents be reading role models for their children by using the Motheread/Fatheread approach. Motheread's training specialist, Donna Foster, led the Institute. The class, which was organized and recruited by Damone Virgilio, InfoBUS Manager and Motheread Coordinator for the Memphis/Shelby County Public Library, participated in Motheread sessions as both students and teachers. Guest speaker and humanities scholar, Marilou Awiatka, presented an engaging and thought provoking session about the importance of place in the story tradition of Native American culture.

With funding from the Cal Turner Foundation and Gannett Foundation, "Using Story as a Way to Teach," an intensive 4-day, 24-classroom-hour training institute that teaches participants how to use the Motheread/Fatheread approach to teach reading techniques to parents and children will be held November 5-8, 2002, in Nashville. Applications for partnership are being accepted by Humanities Tennessee from agencies wishing to bring the Motheread/Fatheread instruction model to their home communities.

2002 U.S. Transplant Games Donor Family Liaisons
Each team has asked a local donor family to volunteer as Donor Family Liaison to the U.S. Transplant Games. Liaisons will participate in pre-Games activities with the athletic team, including media and fundraising events, team meetings and more. They will serve as resources for donor families who would like to attend the Games and will be onsite to welcome local families as they arrive in Florida.
If you are a donor family and would like to participate in the Games and donor family programs, or just want to chat with other donor families in your area, contact your liaison from the list below.
