Tuesday, July 09, 2002 Printer friendly version The Tennessee Geographic Alliance has been awarded the Grosvenor Grant for Building a Toolbox of Skills by the National Geographic Education Foundation to provide an avenue for students to learn about geography and technology. The $48,000 grant will fund a project linking students and professors from the University of Tennessee Geography Department and area high school students and teachers with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Discover Life in America, a non-profit organization that takes inventory of all organisms and species on the earth. The students and teachers will use the park as a laboratory to participate in All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, a program that takes a comprehensive inventory of all the life forms in the park. "We hope the program provides students and teachers the chance to go out and find how to collect research and analyze their data," said Kurt Butefish, coordinator of the Tennessee Geographic Alliance. The students will learn how to use scientific methods for gathering data using a global positioning satellite system.
