The first permanent settlement by non-Indians in Texas was in 1682, near present-day El Paso. When Mexico won independence from Spain, Texas became part of that new nation, and Anglo settlers began to come in, first to the Austin Colony. In 1836, Texas declared independence and the Republic of Texas was formed, which lasted until 1845, when the United States acquired it. A border dispute brought on the Mexican-American War in 1846, resolved in 1848, and by 1850 Texas had given up its claims to that are now in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming. Texas seceded to become part of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and was readmitted as a state in 1870. In the twentieth century, many immigrants from Mexico moved into the state.
