INTRODUCTION
Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century; it was known as Siam until 1939. Thailand is the only southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict.

Thailand's Geography and Culture Thailand's Physical Geography Thailand is located in Southeast Asia, and it borders Cambodia, Laos, and Burma. There are many landforms located in the country of Thailand, including the Khorat Plateau and the Indochina Peninsula. The Himalaya Mountains also occupy a portion of Thailand toward the north. This part of the country is covered with rugged forests. It also has two major rivers near the area, which are the Chao Phraya and the Meking. Thailand's Economic Geography Thailand's economy has grown greatly with the help of foreign investment, mainly from Japan, Thailand's major trade partner. The automobile, textiles, electronics, and tourism industries have increased the most of any in the past few years. Thailand is the leading country for exporting rice, and is also a primary fish exporter. Among rice and fish, Thailand exports sugarcane, corn, and rubber. Thailand's natural resources provide it with much needed revenue. These natural resources include forests for hardwoods and minerals such as: tin, tungsten, and lead. Thailand's Culture In Thailand, families are very close, and people hold respect to their elder family members. If given advice from elders, people in Thailand are expected to abide by it. A common work-week is anywhere from 35 to 48 hours a week. Rice is a common dish, often added to spicy meats or vegetables. Common sports or recreational activities in Thailand include: soccer, table tennis, badminton, and volleyball.

Thailand is situated in South-East Asia, covering an area of nearly 513,115 square kilometres. It is roughly the size of France. It shares land borders with Myanmar (Burma) in the north and west, the Andaman Sea in the west, Laos in the north and north-east, Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand in the east, and Malaysia in the south. The shape of the country is similar to the profile of an elephant with a long trunk stretching down the peninsular. Geography of Thailand
Thailand has a total land area of 513,115 square kilometers. The country is bounded by Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia and Malaysia During the early 1960s, more than 50 percent of the country is covered by forest, however, in 1997 this declined to only 20 percent The country has 25 major river systems (Table 1). Over the last two decades, the watersheds of these river systems play a very
crucial role specifically in boosting agricultural production of the country. Thailand has different geological varieties in four regions. North and West are mountainous, alternating with plains along narrow valleys. Several rise to over 1,500 meters, the highest mountain in Thailand is Doi Inthanon (2,565 m. or 8,417 ft.) on the Thanon Thongchai range in the province of Chiang Mai. Central Region is a vast plain made up of Chao Phraya River basin and the tall-ends of the Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan and Pa Sak rivers, touching on the basins of the Mae Klong and Bang Pakong rivers. The Central Plain area is made up of sedimentary deposits from the Tertiary and Quaternary periods and therefore relatively late in geological term. Subsequently, the land was elevated only a little higher than mean sea level. As it has fertile soil and water, the Central Plain attracted large groups of settlers and eventually became the economic and political center of the country today.

Geography
The topography varies and can be divided into four main regions: the fertile centre region, dominated by the Chao Phraya river network; the north-east plateau, the kingdom's poorest region (thanks to 'thin' soil plus occasional droughts and floods), rising some 300 metres above the central plain; northern Thailand, a region of mountains and fertile valleys; and the southern peninsular region, which extends to the Malaysian frontier and is predominantly rainforests. The southern region receives the most annual rainfall and the northeast the least, although the north has less general humidity. Thailand's climate is ruled by monsoons, resulting in three seasons: rainy (June to October); cool and dry (November to February); and hot (March to May). See our climate page for more information on climate. For administrative purposes, Thailand is divided into 74 changwat or provinces. Each province is subdivided into a number of amphoe or districts, which are further subdivided into tambon (precincts), and

Geology and scenic beauty
Based on the seventh chapter of An Amateur's Guide to the Planet, "Perfect Seas: Thailand and lessons on ultimate sailing," pp. 135-46.
Students will be able:
  • To recognize the geological forces that create scenic beauty in Thailand, China and Vietnam.
  • To learn of areas of the world where sailors enjoy fine sailing.
Directions
  • Have students begin by exploring Thailand's Phangnga Bay (pp. 135-37).
  • Next learn about the geological history of this area of beautiful limestone peaks: "Sailing through geological history" (box, p. 136).
  • Finally, read "Finding perfect seas" (box, p. 145).
Discussion points
  • What geological forces created the limestone peaks celebrated by Chinese classical painters and modern-day sailors in Thailand? (Flat layers of limestone composed mostly of shells and coral were thrust vertically. Because of their unusual purity, the peaks resisted weathering more than the surrounding granite.)
  • What effect do these karst mountains have on storms in Phangnga Bay? (They keep the waves low during storms, even during typhoons).

It is bordered by Myanmar (Burma), Lao People's Democratic Republic, Cambodia and Malaysia, and has 2,420 kilometres of coast line on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. Thailand stretches 1,650 kilometres from north to south, and from east to west 780 kilometres at its widest point.
For economic, social and ecological reasons, Thailand is usually classified into four geographical regions. They are: the central region (including Bangkok Metropolitan Region) comprising the basin of the Chao Phrya River which runs from north to south and after crossing Bangkok flows to the Gulf of Thailand. The central region is often called the "rice bowl" of Thailand being the most fertile area of the country. After the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, it enjoys the highest per capita income in the country.
The northern region is mountainous and was traditionally the most heavily forested area of the country. In the recent years, however, overcutting has considerably reduced its forest resources. The main centres of population are in the narrow alluvial valleys along the four north-south flowing rivers which unite in the northern central plain to form the Chao Phraya.

The kingdom of Thailand covers an area of 514,000 sq km (twice the size of the UK) and stretches 1600 km from north to south and 780 km from east to west, it can be divided broadly into six geographical regions.
The northern highlands comprise the mountain ridges and wide fertile valleys that extend south from the borders with Burma and Laos to about 17N. In this region are the head-water of the four major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River: the Ping, Wang, Yom, and Nan, all of which run roughly parallel from north to south.
The majority of Thailand's 60 million people belong to the Tai group of peoples. Before the arrival of the Tais, Mons, and Khmer already occupied parts of modern Thailand's territory. Today there are still several areas where Mons from the majority of the population, particularly in the southern part of the central plain, and in Ratchaburi province to the southwest of Bangkok, while Khmer speakers live chiefly along the Thai-Cambodian border in southern Isan (northeast Thailand). Isan also has a large Lao-speaking population.
Subsequently, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Malay have all settled in the territory and in the northern hills are several more minorities or 'tribes' who have come from neighboring countries to settle in Thailand. Most numerous of these are the Karen, who in recent times have entered Thailand from Burma, where they number several million, but who probably originated in Tibet or southwest China. Other groups include the Hmong, Lahu, Akha, Lisu and Mien. These people, easily recognized by their distinctive clothing, have retained unique cultural traits which set them apart from the Tai majority.
