Cambodia Laos Myanmar Thailand ... e-cards Travel Guide - Thailand Travel Guide Map of Thailand As the only country in Asia never colonized by the west in Asia, Thailand offers a unique blend of culture quite distinct from the rest of South-East Asia. It has a population of about 60 million with ethnic Thais forming the majority but this area has historically speaking, been a melting pot of cultures and races and thus strains of Mon, Khmer, Burmese, Lao, Malay, Indian and most strongly, Chinese stock produce a degree of ethnic diversity. The Kingdom of Thailand lies in the heart of Southeast Asia, roughly between India and China. It shares borders with Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. It is an extremely devoted Buddhist country based on a monarchy that is respected by all Thais young or old. The kingdom boasts of having more visible historical evidence of past eras than any other Southeast Asian nation but at the same time peaceful and politically stable with a strong democratic government, free press that is a contrast with other countries in the region. The country has not been affected with any major upheavals common in this part of the world and has developed culture of peace and tolerance with all its neighbors.
Covering an area of 514,000 sq. km, the kingdom is divided into four distinct areas: the mountainous North, the fertile Central Plains, the semi-arid plateau of the Northeast, and the peninsula South, with many beautiful tropical beaches and offshore islands. It is also a land of contrast, with beautiful southern islands filled with world class beaches, exotic northern hill-tribe villages, a modern capital which is a huge metropolis by any definition.

Thailand is located in the tropics. The country occupies a position on the southeastern end of Asia and has an area of 514,000 square kilometers or 321,250,000 rais.
The northern part of the country is characterized by mountain ranges while the central region is a vast plain bordered by mountain ranges in the west that run through the south. The east is plateau land that leads down to the Mekong River. Based on these geographic characteristics and climatic conditions the country can be divided into 5 regions.
The North
Mountain ranges frame the northern region. The highest peak is popularly known as Doi Intanon or Dong Ang Kall. It has a height of 2,580 meters above sea level.
Important mountain ranges are Pee Pan Nam, Khun Tal, Dan Lao, Luang Phra Bang, and Thanon Tongchai. These mountain ranges give rise to the Chao Phraya River in the central region. Arising from the same source are the Yom and the Maey rivers that flow into the Salawin.
The mountain valleys feature large expanses of plains that are east of the northern provinces. These plains are in fact river valleys that accumulate sediments making it very productive. Today these plains are very important to the nation's agricultural sector.

Geography
Thailand is a Southeast Asian, predominantly Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant between India and China. For centuries known by outsiders as Siam, Thailand has been something of a Southeast Asian migratory, cultural and religious crossroads. Thailand has an area of 517 000 sq km, making it slightly smaller than the state of Texas in the USA, or about the size of France. Its shape on the map has been compared to the head of an elephant, with its trunk extending down the Malay peninsula. The centre of Thailand, Bangkok, is at about 14 degrees north latitude, putting it on a level with Madras, Manila, Guatemala and Khartoum. The country's longest north-south distance is about 1860km, but its shape makes distances in any other direction 1000km or less. Because the north-south reach spans roughly 16 latitudinal degrees, Thailand has perhaps the most diverse climate in South East Asia. The topography varies from high mountains in the North (the southermost extreme of a series of ranges that extend across northern Myanmar and south-west China to the south-eastern edges of the Tibet Plateau) to limestone-encrusted tropical islands in the South that are part of the Malay Archipelago. The rivers and tributaries of Northern and Central Thailand drain into the Gulf of Thailand via the Chao Phraya Delta near Bangkok; those of the Mun River and other North Eastern waterways exit into the South China Sea via the Mekong River.

Asia Thailand Travel Guide ... People THAILAND OVERVIEW Thailand is a Southeast Asian, predominantly Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant between India and China. For centuries known by outsiders as Siam , Thailand has been something of a Southeast Asian migratory, cultural and religious crossroads. With an area of some 510,000 square kilometres and a population of some 60 million, Thailand is approximately the same size as France. Thailand shares borders with Myanmar to the west and north, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south. Geographically speaking, Thailand is divided into six major regions: the mountainous north where elephants work forests and winter temperatures are sufficiently cool to permit cultivation of temperate fruits such as strawberries and peaches; the sprawling northeast plateau, largely bordered by the Mekong River, where the world's oldest Bronze Age civilisation flourished some 5,000 years ago,- the central plain, one of the world's most fertile rice and fruit-growing areas; the eastern coastal plain, where fine sandy beaches support the growth of summer resorts', western mountains and valleys, suitable for the development of hydro-electric power; and the peninsular south where arresting scenic beauty complements economically vital tin mining, rubber cultivation and fishing.

Overview Thailand covers an area of 514,000 square kilometres in the centre of the South-East Asian peninsula. It is bordered by Myanmar (Burma), Lao People's Democratic Republic, Cambodia and Malaysia, and has 2,420 kilometres of coast line on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. Thailand stretches 1,650 kilometres from north to south, and from east to west 780 kilometres at its widest point.
For economic, social and ecological reasons, Thailand is usually classified into four geographical regions. They are: the central region (including Bangkok Metropolitan Region) comprising the basin of the Chao Phrya River which runs from north to south and after crossing Bangkok flows to the Gulf of Thailand. The central region is often called the "rice bowl" of Thailand being the most fertile area of the country. After the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, it enjoys the highest per capita income in the country.
The northern region is mountainous and was traditionally the most heavily forested area of the country. In the recent years, however, overcutting has considerably reduced its forest resources. The main centres of population are in the narrow alluvial valleys along the four north-south flowing rivers which unite in the northern central plain to form the Chao Phraya.

Stone Elephants - Sukothai Overview
The Kingdom of Thailand, located in Southeast Asia on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, shares boundaries with Myanmar (Burma) on the west and northwest, Laos on the east and northeast, Cambodia (Kampuchea) on the southeast, and Malaysia on the south. Thailand, although rich in rubber and in mineral resources, was never colonized by Europeans and has existed as a unified monarchy since 1350. The capital, BANGKOK, an attractive blend of Western and Thai architecture, was established in 1782. Thailand covers a land area of 513,115 square kilometers, from North 5° 30¨ to 21° and from East 97° 30¨ to 105° 30¨, and extends about 2,500 kilometers from north to south and 1,250 kilometers from east to west, with a coastline of approximately 1,840 kilometers on the Gulf of Thailand and 865 kilometers along the Indian Ocean. Geographical Regions Northern Thailand
Mountains, forests and fertile valleys. Bordered by Myanmar and Laos, characterised by forested mountains - lower extremities of Himalayan foothills - and fertile river valleys, northern Thailand encompasses part of the fabled Golden Triangle. Diverse elements, including crisp mountain scenary, exotic hill tribes, forests worked by elephants, colourful festivals, invigorating cool season weather, ancient cities, exquisite northern Thai and Burmese-style temples, and friendly people contribute to northern Thailand's enduring charm.
