    Introduction
DAMTP was founded in 1959 by George Batchelor . He was succeeded by Keith Moffatt in 1983, and then by David Crighton in 1991 (CDs of the David Crighton Memorial Concert are still available ). The current Head of the Department, since 2000, is Professor Timothy J. Pedley DAMTP is one of the two constituent Departments of the Faculty of Mathematics , the other being the (DPMMS), within which is located the Statistical Laboratory The two departments have begun moving to a new facility, the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) , on the same site as the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences . Statistical physics and superconductivity

The Statistical Physics group is examining phase transitions and critical phenomena in superconductors. These phenomena are intimately linked to the properties of vortices = whirls of super-currents.
The main tools are large scale simulations of simple models as e.g. the XY model. The simulations are run both at the local workstations - currently 34 dual-processor PC:s with Linux - and at the 240-processor parallel computer at
    Complex networks

This highly inter-disciplinary subject is quite new at our department. Complex networks are networks with both randomness and structure. Examples of such systems are abundant in nature and society: Friendship networks, neural networks, computer nets and power grids to mention a few examples. We study both the emergence and time evolution of network structure and dynamical systems on complex networks.
    Mesoscopic superconductivity
The Mesoscopic superconductivity group studies physics of superconductors on a mesoscopic scale, which is intermediate between macroscopic and microscopic (atomic) scales. The research deals with the general problems of quantum transport in superconductors. A new direction of research in the Mesoscopic Superconductivity group is related to quantum computation Space physics Make your choice here: Homepage www.umu.se

    Theoretical Physics
Theoretical research in Argonne's Physics Division addresses a broad range of problems involving the stucture and dynamics of hadrons and nuclei. There is a strong emphasis on comparison to data provided by experimental groups at Argonne and at other facilities around the world. The principal areas of research include: Several of these projects require major numerical simulations using state-of-the-art computers, including the massively parallel Argonne MCS Linux cluster ( Chiba City ) and the NERSC IBM SP ( Seaborg ) Many projects also involve collaborators at domestic and foreign universities and other national laboratories.
    RIA Related Theory Programs
The Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) project will provide a world-class facility dedicated to the production and subsequent acceleration of beams of short-lived nuclei. Argonne's Theory Group is actively involved in numerous projects relevant to existing exotic-beam research and the future RIA facility, including:

Founded by Hideki Yukawa in 1946
PROGRESS OF THEORETICAL PHYSICS is a monthly journal which contains academic research papers on theoretical physics. It was founded by Hideki YUKAWA in 1946. Now it is published for the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Physical Society of Japan . This journal publishes mainly the submitted and refereed original papers in all fields of theoretical physics such as particle physics, field theory, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Each issue contains Papers and Letters, and , sometimes, Invited Papers. Besides the monthly issues, PROGRESS OF THEORETICAL PHYSICS SUPPLEMENT is published approximately quarterly. Each issue contains either long original or review papers or a collection of papers on some specified topics.
Moreover, earlier papers will be add on PTP Online.
Papers cited in the bibliographies of PTP papers can be accessed through a link function provided with PTP Online.

    18. Introduction
The modern KaluzaKlein theories of unification of gauge fields and gravitation, the theories of grand unification and, more recently, superfield, super-string, membrane and conformal field theories have enhanced the role of the geometry of multidimensional spaces in fundamental theoretical physics. An analagous quantum geometry is explored in these online lectures.

    Introduction
The modern Kaluza-Klein theories of unification of gauge fields and gravitation, the theories of grand unification and, more recently, superfield, super-string, membrane and conformal field theories have enhanced the role of the geometry of multidimensional spaces - and hence also that of spinor structures and of "pure" spinors in higher dimensions - in fundamental theoretical physics; exploiting, in particular, the geometrical properties previously developed by Cartan [ Cartan 1966 ] and others (see [ Brauer and Weyl 1935 Budinich and Trautman 1988 ] and references therin). It may very well be, that in addition to the above mentioned developments, there will be a need for some kind of "quantum geometry" for an appropriate description of physics at the Planck scale. Non-commutative geometry has been proposed as a useful candidate for formulating questions and making predictions about physics beyond the Planck scale, and a particular kind of non-commutative geometry, originating from quantum groups [ Takhtajan 1990 ] and braided categories [ Majid 1993 Majid 1991 Durdevic 1997 ], has been intensely pursued in the last years.
