Photographs of Kham's diverse and Elegant Traditional Homes Wooden Architecture in Ganzi
A Kham Aid Foundation Report
by Pamela Logan, November, 1998 Anyone traveling through Kham is struck by the region's beautiful houses. Made of traditional materials in diverse styles, Tibetan homes in Kham are handsome, spacious, and well adapted to their environment. What distinguishes them most from the houses of central Tibet is the abundant and skillful use of wood. Kham has always possessed great forests, wood is an excellent building material, therefore carpentry skills in Kham have been developed to a high degree. House, Baiyu County. The Chinese-style tile roofs are not common in Kham, but areincreasing in popularity because they are more rain-proof than traditional flat roofs. A less lavish house is visible to the right rear. The graduation of the first group of postgraduates from colleges in Tibet Autonomous Region has proved that local institutions of higher learning have become sacred sites where traditional Tibetan culture is carried forward and developed.
The 10 postgraduates, all Tibetans, completed their post-graduate studies and were awarded graduation and master's degree certificates on July 17. They majored in Tibetology, the history of the Tibetan ethnic group, Tibetan language and Tibetan medicine which constitute the core of Tibetan culture over the past three years. Their success shows that Tibetans can promote and carry forward their traditional culture in pace with the times.
This was unimaginable in the past, however. Before the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951, there was not a single school in Tibet in a modern sense and education was only a tool controlled and manipulated by temples, with some people taught in private schools. Tibetan culture and art were made to cater to the nobles and high officials, and the feudal serfdom shackled the spread and growth of fine Tibetan culture.

King Gesar, the longest epic poem in the world, was then only handed down orally by folk ballad singers, who, at the bottom of the social ladder, could only make a living by singing the story of King Gesar, the legendary hero of the Tibetan ethnic group. Butthe ballad-singing was regarded by the nobles as "beggars' hurly-burlies".

Exiled Tibetans sustain culture from afar
December 7, 1996
Web posted at: 11:10 p.m. EST From Correspondent Mike Chinoy NEW DELHI (CNN) Living in exile, a community of Tibetans in India have rebuilt a life centered around their traditional Buddhist culture. The Tibetan community in New Delhi was established so long ago that the younger generation has never seen their native land. But their parents have taught them about the circumstances of their exile. "We are not violent people, but the Chinese used guns to drive us out," said Tibetan refugee Samden Chudon. "They killed our mothers, fathers, grandparents. To save ourselves, we followed the Dalai Lama here. We like India, but we won't stop this fight because China has snatched away our traditions and our livelihood. We'll teach the children the same, make them understand." More than 100,000 Tibetans fled their homeland after an anti- Chinese uprising. The largest group followed their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to India, where they transplanted their culture. They are largely dedicated to the premise that Tibet should be independent, a point they hoped to convey when Chinese President Jiang Zemin visited New Delhi recently.
