Tonga hosts first regional gathering of church partners
May 31, 2001 News media contact: Linda Bloom New York By United Methodist News Service United Methodists met recently in Tonga with church partners from eight Pacific Island nations to discuss issues ranging from mission work to the effects of HIV/AIDS in the region. The consultation was the first of six regional gatherings planned by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries during the next three years. The purpose is to discuss critical issues related to mission and ministry and consider how best to work in partnership. Joining eight staff members and two directors from the mission agency were representatives from autonomous Methodist or United churches in Tonga, Fiji, Papua-New Guinea, New Caledonia, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti and Vanuatu. A pre-meeting orientation was set for women and youth "to give them voice and empower them to be full participants throughout the event," according to the Rev. Youngsook Kang, a board executive. Opening worship on May 20 in Tonga’s Free Wesleyan churches was followed by fellowship and a celebration of Father’s Day in local homes. The day ended with a choral night featuring individual and mass choirs from 11 churches in the district, presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu Fotofili.

Berkeley Anthropologists Have Their Say
Anthropologist Elizabeth Colson doesn't often think of the past. If asked, however, she easily recalls the year 1946, when she first traveled to Africa. Taking field supplies from Johannesburg, she and two other researchers journeyed for three days to Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). There she met a fellow anthropologist, J. Desmond Clark. "Desmond somehow knew we were coming, and he met our train," she says. Colson, an American from Minnesota, and Clark, a Londoner, crossed paths that year when she became senior research officer and then director of the Rhodes- Livingstone Institute. He was curator of the David Livingstone Memorial Museum. "With Desmond, of course, prehistory was everything," Colson says, "although as curator of the museum he had to be interested in contemporary things, too." Desmond Clark's death in February 2002 ended this friendship of more than half a century. But the stories survive. Clark, Colson, and three other anthropologists recently documented their experiences through oral histories. Available as manuscripts and on the Web, the interviews complement Bancroft's other holdings in anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. As told in the oral histories, Colson and Clark each spent substantial time in Africa, directing institutions and lighting up the developing field of anthropology with their work. While he pursued prehistory, she explored social-cultural issues among the Plateau and Gwembe Tonga. Both joined the Berkeley faculty in the 1960s.

World Methodist Evangelism Institute
HISTORY OF INSTITUTE Early beginnings
During the 1970's, leaders in the World Evangelism movement began envisioning an institute which would raise up a new generation of faithful evangelism leaders around the world. In 1979, Dr. Joe Hale, General Secretary of the World Methodist Council said, "We are seeking to develop an Institute for World Evangelization which will enable leadership from East to West, South to North, Orient to Occident to be trained and motivated in world Evangelism - for Methodism to be a movement in the world." In 1979, a pilot seminar was held at Emory University by Dr. George E. Morris, the Arthur J. Moore Professor of Evangelism at Candler School of Theology ; Rev. Sir Alan Walker, World Director of Evangelism, World Methodist Council, and Dr. Joe Hale. Subsequently, the World Methodist Council's meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii in July, 1981 voted to establish the World Methodist Evangelism Institute, a ministry of World Evangelism, World Methodist Council and Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. Bishop William R. Cannon, President of the World Methodist Council; Dr. James T. Laney, President of Emory University, and Dr. Jim L. Waits, Dean of Candler School of Theology were key supporters for the Institute during its formation. Dr. George E. Morris was named the first Director of the Institute. st Quinquennium 1982 - 1987
The historic First International Evangelism Seminar of the World Methodist Evangelism Institute was held in July, 1982 at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. This intensive ten-day seminar focused on the theme "

Coverage of the Tonga History Association Conference Täkanga 'Enau Fohé: Tonga and its Diasporic Communities in the 21st Century
Today, we live in a world that is often described as transnational, global, transcultural, and time-space compressed. Yet, at the same time, it is a world that is hybrid, fragmented, and decentered. It is also a world that is constantly shifting, and the movement across national and regional boundaries through the two-way traffic of people, commodities, culture, ideas, and information is the norm. Our local Tongan culture is re-organized by this global and transnational world, and we find ourselves, as Tongans, traversing this vast ocean of transnationality and post-coloniality.

"These Tongans are a wonderful people," said a man from Vanuatu, shaking his head in amazement at Tongan hospitality during a reception for representatives of Pacific Island churches. The previous night he and his colleagues from eight churches in the region-all of them mission partners of the United Methodist Church-had been welcomed by Her Royal Highness Princess Mele Siu'ilikutapu Fotofili. Also present were directors and staff of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, which was sponsoring the gathering. That was on Sunday, a day when Tongans go to church and then relax. No hardship for the visitors; they worshiped in one or another of 20 of Tonga's Free Wesleyan Churches, then feasted and fellowshipped in Tongan homes. Representatives from the Women's and Youth networks of the partner churches in the region compared notes later that day and shared their hopes for ministry and mission.
