Track and Field
The basics of track and field, also called "athletics," are running, jumping, and throwing. The activities are also the basics of every sport ever devised.
Running
Jumps Throws Decathlon and Heptathlon ... More Sports
Running
Running competitions can be divided into seven groups. Dashes, also known as "sprints," are the shortest and swiftest running events. Middle-distance races range from 800 meters (874.9 yards) to 1500 meters (3 miles). The 10,000-meter (6.2 miles or 25 laps) race, a distance run, is the longest race run on a track in the Olympic Games. The most grueling distance run is the marathon. In relay races, four individuals run a lap, called a "leg," then pass a hollow tube, called a "baton," to a succeeding team member. In hurdling events, competitors clear a series of 10 barriers called "hurdles." Jumps
There are four types of jumps in Olympic competition. High jumpers leap over a bar resting between two upright standards. Contestants are allowed three attempts to clear each height. In pole vaulting, the athlete attempts to clear a crossbar using a long flexible pole. In long jumping, the athlete jumps, attempting to cover the greatest possible distance. An athlete's goal in the triple jump is to leap the greatest distance possible in a series of three quick steps.

ANCIENT ORIGINS HUNT TURNS FROM FOOD TO MEDALS In the sphere of track and field, there are at least two events that precede the ancient Greeks and running races. The pole vault formed part of the ancient Irish Taliteann Games in 1829BC, the origins of the activity stemming from the use of poles to jump over streams. Wood was used up until the 19th century, when bamboo from Asia was deemed better for the purpose. The hammer, too, was thrown at the Taliteann Games. The most famous of all track and field events in history is, arguably, a road race; the marathon. Legend has it that the race was devised by the Greeks to commemorate Pheidippides, a soldier who ran 25 miles to bring home news of the Athenian victory over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. Pheidippides ran, yelled out the great news and then dropped dead, so the story goes. In honour of the soldier who went the extra mile, the marathon of the ancient Games was run over 26 miles.

Feb. 19, 2002 The Penn Relays: First, Largest, Best of the Relay Meets By Dave Johnson Penn Relays Director The first Penn Relays was a smash success. Held on April 21, 1895, in conjunction with the University's Spring Handicap Track and Field Games, the meet, now the longest uninterrupted collegiate track meet in the country, was a greater success than hoped for, drawing an attendance of approximately 5,000, the largest track and field crowd to that time in Philadelphia. At the dawn of the 20th century, track and field in the United States was centered around the three large eastern cities of Boston, New York and Philadelphia, so it is evident that in addition to being the largest track crowd in Philadelphia, it was immediately one of the largest ever in America. The pre-history of the Penn Relays, and the history of relay running as sport, began in 1893 at the University of Pennsylvania. While there are earlier examples of relay races having been run, nowhere else did the concept take hold and flourish. In fact, the history of relay racing cannot be told without linking it to the Penn Relay Carnival.

On the surface the black athlete is perhaps the most visible integrated racial subject in the U.S.seen in all facets of the media, cheered by millions of fans, and teamed with white counterparts. To some the projection of the black athlete on TV, the sports page or the cereal box is a reassurance that minorities are understood and accepted in the U.S. However, while often hailed as an icon of racial progress, paradoxically, the black athlete creates a potentially injurious basis for all other ideas about blackness and black identity.
