Building trades cancellation disappoints students By Marianne Szabo
Of The Reporter Staff The class has constructed houses for more than a decade, although only remodeling assignments could be obtained during the 2001-2002 school year. Advanced Building Trades is a two-semester class that meets daily for three hours. The prerequisite is Introduction to Building Trades, which meets one hour a day over two semesters. Losy said that since students found out about the cancellation this spring, it was too late to take other classes. He said many take the introduction course first, expecting to advance to the next level. Students in the 1997-98 building trades program drafted a letter defending the program to the School Board when they heard of the possible cancellation, but the letter was never sent, Losy said, because by then the board already axed the course. The letter was signed by Andy Derksen, Eli Glewen, Andy Kast, Ben Brewer, Bernie Boldt, Matt Clagett, Jeremy Thurk and Matt Vellema.

D R A F T I N G Modern computer drafting systems allow the Drafting students to explore the process of taking ideas, sketches and specifications of designers and engineers and preparing them to scale. Using standard symbols and approved drawing techniques, these high school students are able to experience hands-on development of drafting projects. The first year Drafting program provides instruction in the fundamentals of lettering and lines, use of instruments, and basic measurements. Students become familiar with one-view, two-view, and three-view drawings, isometrics and obliques. The second year course familiarizes students with foundations, residential floor plans, electrical plans, specifications, structural steel detailing for commercial buildings, and surveying. Students who successfully complete one year or more of Drafting and comply with other exemption requirements may qualify for six semester hours credit with the Drafting and Design Technology program of Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS. Information can be provided to students by the Drafting instructor upon request. The goal of the Drafting program is to help students develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes for gainful employment in the field of drafting or in a related field. Through skills acquired in this course, students will have a background to prepare them for college coursework in civil and mechanical engineering, architecture, or other related majors.

Safe Not Sorry
Eye Safety Encourage Your Family and Construction Worker to Use Eye Protection at Home and at Work. We Only Get One Set of Eyes!
Imagine waking up in the morning and not being able to see your loved ones! Eye injuries can be prevented if good safety practices are followed, and appropriate eye protection worn. In construction more than 10,000 eye injuries occur each year that force workers to miss work! Construction has the highest rate of eye injuries when compared to other lines of work. At Home and At Work activities can put your eyes at risk in less than a blink of an eye! From flumes and splashes from household cleaners, to dust and flying debris from lawn tools, to nails, metal, splinters, and cut wire ends flying in the air. Sawing, grinding and chipping all make irritating dust. As well as moving machinery and power tool use. Serious injury and blindness can occur not only to yourself, but to others nearby. Children should be taught to protect their eyes from an early age. Commit this month to the use of Safety Eyewear to avoid risky eye injuries.
